  1. Trainers? Don’t the Ukrainians already know how to soldier?
About a year too late, the U.S. finally enters the fray.
The West anxiously awaits Putin’s reply.

  2. What makes no sense? Obama would cheerfully see US troops die ( sending 4000 combat troops to Africa to “combat” Ebola virus shows that) but the optics of US troops dying in combat is something he doesn’t want. Ukrainian troops dying – that is just fine.
Probably that is one of the things which was said during negotiations for the latest ceasefire in the Ukraine- “Obama wants us all to fight and to die.”

  3. By Jove Lance, I think you are beginning to figure this out. If Quebec can leave Canada with 50% + 1 what do you think 96% of Crimean resident’s rights are? The other areas in dispute I have little knowledge of and don’t speak Ukrainian, but I suspect that they feel a lot like the folks in Crimea most identify as Russian first and Ukrainian only by accident.

  4. This wont end well.
The ruskies are well established in the Crimea. They will respond to US troops on Crimean soil. This situation could get out of hand very quickly.
While I don’t believe one word putin says, he is not cowed by obama.

  5. Are you that naive that you believe that 96% of Crimea’s residents voted to join Russia? Try googling “phony election in Crimea” and then say that with a straight face.

  6. If the vote for Kosovo to secede was on the up and up so was this. If the utter lack of authoritative data obvious in the google search you recommended isn’t a clue to you that the vote certainly has the color of legitimacy, I have a bridge I’d like you to look at…I’m selling it cheap!

  7. This provides the excuse for Putin to send troops to Ukraine – as trainers, of course.
I am sorry, but the West, especially the EU, is responsible for this mess. Did they really think the Russians would let the Ukraine (Uncle Samovich’s backyard) be sucked into the EU and eventual NATO membership?
The US will mess this up royally due to the ignorance and disinterest of the POTUS

  8. Why are votes for Western political goals all legitimate and those against it illegitimate. Remember the legally elected government of Ukraine was overthrown by an uprising encouraged by the West.
There are more urgent geopolitical issues than tweaking Putin’s nose.

  9. I must not be being clear. The whole dog and pony show in the Ukraine is being orchestrated by the same “rocket scientists” who brought us most of geopolitical fiascos we have endured for past 14 years. What baffles me is how anyone can believe a word coming out of any western government’s foreign policy departments. When your policy makes Putin look like a statesman and you look like a fool, I think its time to change policy (and policy makers). From a Canadian perspective, I get the urge to curry favor with the large domestic (western) Ukrainian voting bloc, but don’t think we need to go about it like a bear cub wearing boxing gloves.

  10. So, I guess some here have no problem with First Secretary Putin retaking all the former Warsaw Pact satellite states within a new Russian empire.
I agree with Lance, send lethal arms not trainers. The Ukrainians know how to fight in an even contest.

  11. Let’s see, countries to NATO fold, Poland, Czech Republic, Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, (Ukraine),Yugoslavia (former) et al. Explicit promise to Russia not to do exactly this?…never mind…that was then. Let’s not forget destruction of Libya, Syria, Iraq…formerly at least stable if not free.

  12. Absolutely I have a finish friend who is perplexed at why the USA would even consider anything outside of arming Ukraine. The Ukrainian army is top shelf they are very good fighters, and will never be rolled over again they have not forgotten !!!
And have a massive military for their size. For just this kind of thing. They knew it was just a matter of time.
