  7. The results of a Health Canada study released November 6 show that Ontario is not protecting the health of residents living near wind turbines, and that longer setbacks between the wind turbines and homes are required.
    Health Canada’s summary of its Wind Turbine Noise and Health study results included the fact that responses to the study’s questionnaire show participants reporting experiencing distress or annoyance when wind turbine noise was at 35 decibels/dBA. Current Ontario regulations are based on the World Health Organization Night Noise limit of 40 dBA but that limit was designed solely for traffic and airport noise.
    The results of the Health Canada study confirm that wind turbine noise was different than road and airport noise, with issues beginning at 35 dBA. The study also reported that the number of people experiencing disturbance or high annoyance from wind turbine noise was statistically related to several , self-reported health effects such as changes in blood pressure, migraines, tinnitus, dizziness, and perceived stress.
    Other jurisdictions including New Zealand and the State of South Australia already use the 35 dBA standard for wind turbine noise, particularly in rural areas.
    To protect residents from wind turbine noise over 35 dBA, the noise modelling developed for Health Canada indicates that the setback between turbines and homes should be 1,300 metres, not the current 550 metres used in Ontario. The Health Canada report specifically contradicts the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health report, released in 2010; 40 dBA is not, therefore, an appropriate noise threshold for wind turbines.

  15. Bluetech – I did some looking online for temperature records in north america. There are more record highs in the 30s than there are after 2000. Since that’s regional, I expanded my search to a dozen cities around the world and made a startling discovery. I couldn’t find a record high or low for these cities that was over 30 years old, and the highs were almost all after 2000. When the lowest lows were mostly in the 80’s, it makes me wonder just how long of a data set they’re using for the records.

    Meanwhile, the Institute for Energy Research estimates that we have enough natural gas in the U.S. to meet electricity needs for around 575 years at current fuel demand and to fuel homes heated by natural gas for 857 years or so – because we have more gas than Russia, Iran, Qatar and Saudi Arabia combined.
    The really good news is, “But after six years of trying, we learned that the laws of economics can’t be circumvented. Which is great news for consumers, bad news for progressives”.

    Research blaming pesticides for the decline in honeybees has been called into question by a leaked note suggesting that scientists had decided in advance to seek evidence supporting a ban on the chemicals.
    The private note records a discussion in 2010 between four scientists about how to persuade regulators to ban neonicotinoid pesticides.
    The EU imposed a temporary ban last year after the European Food Safety Authority identified risks to bees. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs opposed the ban, saying that there was not enough evidence of harm to bees.

    The CBC explains this apparent conflict of interest.

    This is a variation of the “Strombo” defence. In that the CBC ombudsman gave George a pass for not disclosing his ties with the Suzuki foundation when interviewing Suzuki because George’s program was sometimes news and sometime entertainment and sometimes CBC news recognizes him and sometimes they don’t and … ‘look a squirrel’.

  23. The great progressive economic crisis du jour – dropping oil prices. Yes that will devastate the government, I mean private, economy. Oh right, we are all a part of government. Anyway what will be the devastating economic effects of falling oil and gas (not yet though?) prices? We of course, can all recall the devastating economic effects of dropping computer prices, & cell phones, & technology. Those silly right wingers, thinking that’s a good thing. What’s next, freedom leads to prosperity? C’mon.
    Now remember everyone, when someone pays less money at the gas pump, the money saved just disappears, no way it gets spent on consumption and GST. No way man, it goes “underground.” Right? Now listen carefully, corporations don’t create jobs…
    Well never mind that, won’t falling oil prices make “alternative fuels” more attractive? Oh shit.
    Can PMSH and the Tories survive the political fall out of falling prices?
