    Yes, of course the Kurds will cede their lands, Assad will blithely relenquish half of Syria, the Iraqi government will give up a third of its land and we’ll call it ‘Sudetenland Part Deux’. Meanwhile the Christians can have their cathedral detonated, be driven from their homes and have Nazarene spray painted on their homes, and convert to Islam on pain of supreme sanction.
    Clearly, the ‘learned’ professor sees ISIS as a ‘good negotiating party’…
    BTW those dozen NY Times reporters will be dispatched alright, by means of a knife across the throat. I’m sure it will all make for ‘pleasant reading’!

  8. He’s not wrong, his timing sucks, though. We most certainly need to understand what they want and why they want it if for no other reason than to prevent it. The problem comes when he asserts that they “want a place at the table”. A place at my table is earned by trust and commonality, not by slaughtering innocents and disgusting acts. The Russians are pushing pretty hard but I still have some trust that they don’t want to kill every last one of us. Perhaps the IS can be reasoned with but first they have to understand that these particular infidels can and will kill every last one of them if they insist on it. That first, negotiations after.

  13. I am always wary of politicians using absolutist language, it leaves them little room to manouver (do politics) and justifies horrible things. What argument is left when facing evil.
    The latter argument is made even worse if you use absolutist language and don’t follow through. See John Kerry about a year ago with Syria, why he is still Sec of State after going so far out on the language limb on Syria and then being cut off by Obama I will never know.
    The problem comes when you are actually faced with evil, or a soemthing turning into it, I think ISIS qualifies based on the underlying ideology and behaviour. These people are a law unto themselves although they feel they are doing God’s will (i.e opposing evil in their own language)
    So, John Kerry and Obama using good/evil languae makes me queasy becasue I dont think they know what they are doing. They dont know their objectives (which should be clear if ISIS is evil in their eyes) But either they lack the moral courage to back up their words with consistent actions or they dont really mean what they say. If you cant have a clear objective, you cant have a strategy and all you ar eleft with is a bunch of tactics, like bombing from above.
    Strategic confusion combined with lack of moral clarity is what leads to the defeat of larger powers by smaller powers. We live in dangerous times because of leadership failures.
    Lots can happen in 2 years.

  14. Sorry, the rat, but I have to disagree with you. The IS culture doesn’t allow for negotiations between equals. The Russian culture does (but discretely check for wallet, watch and rings after the handshake and formal hug). To IS, the strong horse will always rule over the lesser. Efforts to understand them would appear to them to be acknowledging weakness on our part. Efforts to fight a “fair” war are also an expression of weakness. Not killing women and children are an expression of weakness. That which does not equal their understanding must be weakness. The longer it takes us to mirror their results (hopefully never their methods), the better it would be.
    For a psych-ops start, quietly let it leak out that special forces groups from the anglosphere are practising with pig-fat injected hollow points, so that anyone killed by a sniper will be profaned at the moment of death (and will not go to heaven, will not collect 72 virgins, but will have daily pineapple suppositories). If the Islamic groups in the west violently protest, offer them one-way tickets to join the jihadis as they are tacitly supporting the terrorists (if someone thinks that terrorists belong in heaven, not hell, then they don’t see what the terrorists are doing as wrong, IMHO). We have always made exceptions to legal protections for lawbreakers – kill someone and you will lose your freedom of association – I suggest that we apply this to respecting the religious sensibilities of those we actively fight against. The rules we use should be tempered by the rules of those we are fighting against: the Russians appear to obey the Geneva convention, so we will apply it to any of them captured on the battlefield. ISIS…. not so much.
    Paraphrasing one of David Weber’s characters said in a book I recently read “what makes you think that we can’t be just as underhanded as you?”

Obama turned his back on Iraq, because he hated the success that his predecessor had in stabilizing Iraq.

Distilling ‘progressivism to its core, “If there is no Good nor Evil then everything is permissible and simply a matter of negotiation”. All we need to know before reading the article is that the author is a progressive and we can save ourselves the time.

  38. Seriously? Bush’s war was a success. He won Iraq. Democracy and a stable government was imposed. It worked.
    Obama has allowed the country to be conquered by foreign fighters. He LOST Iraq to an external force, namely Iran and China. Its not the last thing he’s going to lose to external forces either, given the Mexican border issue. Indications are he could lose Chicago, if you trust the headlines.
    It all stopped being Bush’s fault waaaay back in 2008 Daniel. Try to keep up. And by the way, We Told You This Was Coming all the way back when Barry won the DemocRat nomination.
