02.08.2014 – We had a foretaste of being encumbered by ice a few days ago when we attempted to reach Arctic Bay, an Inuit settlement about 100 miles south of here. Soon after we had entered Admiralty Inlet that leads to Arctic Bay, we were quickly surrounded by ice. We gave up and turned around, but progress was occasionally impossible and it took us several hours to reach open water.

I have been watching the ice pack via satellite and other reports. Strait of Bellot and King William Island are not just blocked, they never opened. I think over on the north tip of Alaska, the ice is not far from the shore, which means, if you dont leave soon, beach the ship, start walking south and relive the Franklin Expedition. I love fools with moderately decent IQ’s, yet refuse to use them.

Just so we all understand how f-ed up that is, Death Valley at this time of year is normally 115+ in the day time. 89F is a winter temperature. Like, December.
I bet these earnest boaters up in the North West Passage will be righteously indignant if the Canadian Air Force bills them for the chopper rescue.

I spent the first week of July in the Arctic on the Boothia Penn. It was an amazing experience and one I’d recommend to all. And, yes, I was surprised at the sea ice…there was a tiny bit of open water along some parts of the coast, but otherwise it was wall to wall thick solid sea ice.
Fishing at midnight with the sun up is a neat experience. Pretty countryside. Lovely people. All good.

This last year I commented to a class of 10th graders that there hadn’t been any global warming since about the time they were born. They all assured me I was way wrong. In fact, some of their science teachers assured me I was way wrong. But those science teachers also believed that DDT was evil and caused horrible side effects. Not too surprising the principal quoted Cesar Chavez (who was a righteous dude) Nelson Mandela (the violent Marxist) and Bob Marley (the pot smoking supporter) in his graduation address.
Yes Phantom, death valley is usually pretty hot at this time of the year, a buck twenty is quite common, on the flip side, it was 30C in Finland yesterday, when normally it is about 22-24C. Just shows you that the greenies don’t understand “energy in motion” and thusly “data” should be suspect

Which tells you just how unseasonably cool is was in Death Valley on Sunday. 89F in the hottest spot in the whole freakin’ valley, next to an asphalt parking lot, on a dodgy thermometer bent to the hot side. Now that is a record!
