Think of a crucial difference: being Canadian (forgoing one’s culture and upbringing and willingly transforming into another citizen) and being in Canada (not assimilating or acclimatising). For one to willingly put behind them everything they know and embracing a new identity speaks to their character in a way just living in Canada does not. If immigrants are the former, it riles the political multiculturalists who seek to keep immigrants are tribes who separate themselves from the populace. There is not only a voter’s block for political parties but also repudiation of the Canadian identity.
In Adler’s podcast, note that the Russian immigrant [politely] mentions that “some” immigrants come to Canada expecting to be given everything. I have ZERO DOUBT that this attitude most often comes from their Immigration Lawyers and Leftist Apparatchiks who do believe that no one *really* needs to contribute in the Land of Milk & Honey.
Back in the fall of ’97, about thirty front-line police supervisors sat in a classroom at the Canadian Police College and listened to a bright young Inspector from Trawna gush on for an hour or so about the wonderful mosaic of plusses that immigration had brought to the GTA, and by extension, Canada. The attendees themselves were a pretty “diverse” bunch, with students from across Canada, the Caribbean, and even a chap from Venezuela.
When Mr. Embrace Diversity asked for questions, a few students tactfully suggested that while immigration was certainly necessary, and that there was a lot of good to be said about it, perhaps Canada should be tightening things up a bit. A Metro Toronto S/Sgt. cited the case of dozens of known war criminals living in Toronto, and noted that 2 pieces of crap arrested in a violent bank robbery where a teller had been shot and killed, had been deported from Canada but had managed to re-enter. The lecturer responded by pointing out that no system could be 100% perfect, and, quite often the people who had issues with the status quo would be better off if they devoted their time to self-examination for latent bigotry.
At exactly the right moment, when tempers were starting to boil, a Police Superintendent from Antigua and Barbuda – who was as non-white as you can get – put up his hand and noted that his country would be practically crime-free if his Government would do a better job of keeping out violent young males from Jamaica. Applause all around.
Now, you can take the word Jamaica and insert the name of any other country, but it still boils down to a simple directive to our Government: let in all the honest, hardworking people you want, from every country in the world…but you damned well better keep the trash out.
And so I rest my case, on this, our 147th Birthday. đ

Uh Bill I live in Edmonton. Yes 30 young men went to wage jihad. How do we know this? Because someone has been monitoring them. What happens if they get shot in a foreign land? Maybe they die and we don’t have to worry about them coming back to Canada. What happens if they come back to Canada? They will continue to be monitored and likely they will be prevented from doing any harm to Canadians in Canada.
I really don’t know what kind of police state you wish to live in but one that monitors everyone’s actions all the time is not something I really welcome. Now if you want to live in such a police state I am sure there are lots of countries around the world that will oblige you in your quest. Let one of those countries not be Canada.

Myth. Big time. Chretien balanced the budget, under pressure from the Reform Party, by introducing new or increasing existing taxes, 139 times, not by cutting spending as Reform would have done. Not exactly “right”.
I’m in a rural area too on a large lot that was annexed as part of the city limits-our home is a 20 minute drive to the city. According to our bylaws, no campfires allowed in city limits, unless you have a gas fired pit. This law was enacted after the massive fires in 2003.
The law against wood burning fireplaces covers all of BC-those who had wood burning fireplaces before the ban are allowed to keep them, but all homes built since 1995 have gas burning fireplaces. Pellet stoves are allowed.
