Reader Tips

A few years ago a British Dolly Parton fan played a 45 rpm vinyl single of Dolly Parton’s Jolene at 33 rpm and posted the results on the interweb. The video (since removed) became a viral hit, not because it was funny but because the slowed-down version sounded good, and was a bit of a revelation; at the very least, it exposed the incredible rhythmic precision and soulfulness of Parton’s phrasing, which can’t always be limned when she’s trilling and warbling at breakneck speed. Without further ado, here’s a recently posted version, with improved audio, of Jolene at 73.3%.
If there are any offended Dolly fans out there, I’ll half-unoffend you with a slowed-down version that’s been electronically corrected to normal pitch, and make further reparations with the original version here.
The comments are open, as always, for your Reader Tips.

  1. EBD;
    That’s not Dolly at 73 1/3 RPM
At that speed she’d sound like a chipmunk on helium.

  2. Ok, you said %, not RPM.
I was thinking of those other things filled with helium, not her voice. My bad.

  3. Living space? What the Sam Hill is that. I have a sure fire way of getting rid of spiders and other insects in our house, and that being a fly swatter or my shoe.
I guess some people have two screws loose. I’ll bet she would get downright huffy and not so mealy mouthed if a real conservative showed up. Must be a liberal.

  4. Bet she’s still single too. Will undoubtedly stay that way. Most decent men have a allergy to those kind of nuts.

  5. She’s a stupid twit. Spiders are useful predators, they eat insects.
For catching/killing insects a hand vacuum is more effective and a lot less messy than a filthy flyswatter.

  6. The inevitable disclaimer at the end of north of 60 link:
“changes in how we classify cancer or the introduction of new screening or diagnostic tests” could affect this, according to the study.
One bright note: Cancer mortality rates started decreasing in 1991.
Heart disease accounted for a large portion of deaths in 1900, and that’s still the case today. Overall, though, life spans are increasing.”

  8. Hand vacuum? Actually you got something there, and I think this qualifies as a Reader Tips.
The year our oldest daughter had her high school grad there were tons of mosquitoes around and after the come and go in our house our house was black with mosquitoes. One of the last guests suggested using our central vac. I did and after a half hour they were all gone. Worked like a charm.

  9. If that woman’s house had lots of spiders then she must have had lots of other bugs too. After all, spiders go where the food is. Maybe she should get off of youtube and try cleaning her “living space”. Food crumbs on the floor or dirty dishes tend to attract flies and roaches.

  12. Re: Jolene!
I`ve often wondered about older songs and recordings (that are on Youtube etc.) if indeed they`re running at the right speed or not.
My Grandfather had an Edison drum type gramophone that had a clock like mechanism with a wind up crank and a speed governor. Depending on why type of lube oil was used, the speed varied greatly. We had to adjust it manually, and by ear. When we lubed it with Singer Sewing Machine O79ail, it seemed to run the best. My Dad used to say, ”Maybe our brains aren`t all running at the same speed, that`s why we can`t get it right.”

If you listen to the Edison in the link, it sure sounds like it`s running a tad slow! But then there`s nothing saying that the video is in real time.
As for Dolly Parton, I knew she`d had a reduction, but I thought it was more than 78%!

“The sea ice surrounding Antarctica, which, as I reported in my book, has been steadily increasing throughout the period of satellite measurement that began in 1979, has hit a new all-time record high for areal coverage.
The new record anomaly for Southern Hemisphere sea ice, the ice encircling the southernmost continent, is 2.074 million square kilometers and was posted for the first time by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s The Cryosphere Today early Sunday morning.”

Military Bans Bibles But Forces Soldiers to Adhere to Ramadan Rules
The US Air Force kicked Christian Gideon’s volunteers off base in March.
The Bibles were too offensive and violated the separation of church and state rule.
But US military personnel are expected to adhere Islamic practices during Ramadan.
    Stars and Stripes reported:
U.S. personnel accustomed to drinking their coffee on the drive to work will have to put that habit on hold for about a month. It’s one of a few lifestyle changes Americans will have to make during the holy month of Ramadan.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Officials expect Ramadan to begin at sunrise on Saturday, depending on when the new moon is sighted. The holy month lasts for approximately 30 days — until about July 28. For Muslims around the world, Ramadan is a month of fasting and devotion to God. Most Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, when families gather for Iftar — the meal that breaks the fast.
