Tonight we listen to a stunning remake of the dramatic opening fanfare from Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra, more commonly known as the theme music from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

  1. August 22, 2010:

A captured American soldier is training Taliban fighters bomb-making and ambush skills, according to one of his captors and Afghan intelligence officials.

Private Bowe Bergdahl disappeared in June 2009…The 24-year-old has converted to Islam and now has the Muslim name Abdullah, one of his captors told The Sunday Times. A Taliban deputy district commander in Paktika, who called himself Haji Nadeem, told the newspaper that Bergdahl taught him how to dismantle a mobile phone and turn it into a remote control for a roadside bomb.

    June 3, 2014:

Many soldiers in Bergdahl’s platoon said attacks seemed to increase against the United States in Paktika province in the days and weeks following his disappearance. “Following his disappearance, IEDs started going off directly under the trucks. They were getting perfect hits every time. Their ambushes were very calculated, very methodical,” said Buetow.

It was “very suspicious,” says Buetow, noting that Bergdahl knew sensitive information about the movement of U.S. trucks, the weaponry on those trucks, and how soldiers would react to attacks.

  2. The Bowe Bergdahl file just keeps on growing…
    http://www.libertynews.com/2014/06/breaking-fox-news-now-reporting-bowe-bergdahl-left-behind-note-renouncing-american-citizenship-video/
“In the video segment from Fox News below we see Jennifer Griffin make it clear the documents Bowe Bergdahl left behind are said to contain his intent to renounce American citizenship. As if that isn’t damning enough, a Fox News report also states this may not be the first time Bergdahl attempted to desert his post.”
Some chatter on Bergdahl being owed + $300,000. in backpay that he didn’t receive while he was being “held captive” …
Well, B. Hussien wanted to take the heat off of the VA scandal. Seems legit with all the revelations that have come out.

Piers Corbyn: The Reality of Long Range Weather and Climate Forecasting | EU2014
Piers Corbyn began recording weather and climate patterns at the age of five, constructing his own observation equipment. He obtained a first-class honors degree in physics at Imperial College London. In 1969, he became the first president of the Imperial College Students’ Union to be directly elected by the student body. He later studied astrophysics in 1979 at Queen Mary College, London, and then began examining the relationship between Earth’s weather and climate and solar activity. Following many years of weather prediction as an occupation, Piers formed WeatherAction in 1995, where he sells web-accessible long-range monthly forecasts for Britain and Ireland, Europe, and the USA plus special forecasts of ‘Red Weather periods’ and related increases in thunder/tornado and earthquake risk.

  4. The OPPA is being more than a bit stupid, really: if you’re for “the Libs”, why broadcast, in an explcitly intimidating fashion, all over the place that you’re concerned that the Tories are going to win, which they are going to, actually?
Heard it today: my cousins (in their 70s), stood in line at St. James Church (Stratford), in spite of the, er, irregular campaign being mounted by the OPPA, to vote for Tim Hudak, which they did.
I was walking by their place, post-voting, and I got flagged down: “What are the police doing?” I had to do a bit of de-programming, in the sense of explaining to them that there are, maybe, 20,000 or 30,000 of them, whereas there are about 2,000,000 of us (not quite Stephen J. Harper numbers in Ontario, but pretty good); including a good number of folks who are equally, er, disturbed by the OPPA’s off-the-ranch behaviour, including both a good number of OPPA members and, I’m pretty sure, almost all OPPVA members. I’d wager that the phone lines are feeling fairly warm at the moment.
In this regard, the OPPA may well wish to recall Premier Bill Davis’s quip to Chief Government Whip Bud Gregory about one Lorne Henderson, Minister of Agriculture, back in the day (immortalized in a Globe and Mail editorial cartoon): “Bud, would you mind going to get Lorne? He’s gone through the fence, again.”
If Mr. Christie wishes to continue to make himself look like an abject idiot, I am more than willing to continue to compare him to Mr. Henderson, which might be more of an insult to Mr. Henderson, really, all things considered, and a very tall order, indeed.

  5. Coming to a government near you: Quebec’s budget includes a provision to raise the age of retirement income splitting from all sources of revenue to 65. Their excuse: 70% of income splitters are still working.

  6. Realistically, that’s the way it should be. You can’t expect to not start seriously working at 30 retire at 65 then live to be 100. 35 years of work is not enough to sustain someone through a 35 year retirement (unless they save 1/2 of every dollar they earn) and a 100 year life.

I propose an Ant Tax. The more ants on your farm the higher taxes you should pay. Proceeds to be remitted to the Mary Robinson Foundation for Climate Justice.

“Can Canada Become an Energy Export Powerhouse?”
“Earlier this week TransCanada (TSX: TRP)(NYSE: TRP) signed an important deal with Chevron (NYSE: CVX) and Apache (NYSE: APA) to build the $1.9 billion Merrick Mainline Pipeline Project. It’s an important project that will help link the emerging natural gas export market in British Columbia, which includes Chevron and Apache’s Kitimat LNG joint venture, with natural gas supplies from production basins to the east.
    Why this project matters
The TransCanada pipeline will transport 1.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day that’s sourced through TransCanada’s own NOVA gas transmission system. It will take the gas from that source to Chevron and Apache’s proposed Pacific Trails Pipeline that will feed into the Kitimat LNG Terminal in British Columbia.”

Justin Trudeau has disclosed a total of $10,030 in expenses. Two of his trips that are disclosed are questionable.
The one to Sudbury was for a $1,200 a plate Liberal fundraiser which included a couple of photo-ops.
The one to Washington included a forum where JT gave a speech. The Centre for American Progress and the Liberal party will not confirm or deny that JT was given an honourarium.
    The media has not noticed.

“TORONTO – OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes says any political activity by its members is not allowed and he will make this very clear to his service.
Hawkes has scheduled a meeting for Thursday with Jim Christie, president of the Ontario Provincial Police Association, to “clarify” what restrictions govern police officers when it comes to political activity.
He said he will remind Christie officers of any rank are not permitted to be involved in political activity.
Any who violate this, said the commissioner, can be “charged and disciplined under the Police Services Act.””
