Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

“It is not a figment of Moscow’s imagination that the U.S. State Department encourages feminism and LGBT activism, at least in certain countries. When Washington, DC, considers having successful gay pride parades a key benchmark for “advancement” in Eastern Europe, with the full support of U.S. diplomats, we should not be surprised when the Kremlin and its sympathizers move to counter this”
The whole truth in a paragraph…Putin will destroy Obama because the same backlash to the isues of Facsist LGST exists in the majority of Americans. Watch him push this truth
This Obama VS Putin is played out as a little Chicago Punk hiding from the big bad monster. No American respects a coward & Putin knows Obama is all the above.
Mark, I can’t thank you enough for bringing these three essays to our attention, especially “Putinism and the Anti-WEIRD Coalition”: absolutely a must read.
Interesting, yet incomplete analysis in the third tome.
To understand the Russian soul, understand that Orthodoxy is the faith that Rome split away from. Subsequently, Chistianity’s central message was further diluted by the Protestant movement.
Now, Rome and the west have placed diminished importance on the concept of introspection, through which the individual gains strength and finds inner peace by facing up to and attempting to conquer their own weaknesses. A marked contrast to the west’s victim culture, in which personal failures are increasingly blamed on the other.
Although the ROC has emerged from its subservient role in the Soviet era, it has still has more than 1000 years of history from which to draw and still has a long way to go recaptured its historical purity. The Soviet era was a mere blip in the Russian history, whose people see themselves as eternal guardians of moral values.
Putin recognizes the parade and, like Ralph Klein, placed himself in front of it.
Well you should let Schindler know how it really is. He’ll surely be immeasurably appreciative of your invaluable insights.
Sometimes it helps to speak with people who have recently arrived here from that part of the world instead of listening to those who fear the ingrained understanding of purpose by the individual Russian.
“To understand the Russian soul,…”
You need to abort your litter, beat up your wife and drown in vodka. There is no soul, all there is a drunken Siberian Horde. The last time Russia was apart of civilized world was 1615. Not nuking them in 1945 was the worst mistake in history.
How does your psychiatrist suggest you handle your irrational anger problem?
I know a lot of these people and they’re much more civilized than you sound.
Subsequently, Chistianity’s central message was further diluted by the Protestant movement.
Gee, I thought we all read the same scriptures. Apparently some people think God doesn’t have the power to make Himself clear without an ‘official’ interpreter.
Russia (Esau) has always believed in taking things by force. They still owe us billions for wheat they conned out of the CWB.
Wouldn’t hurt for those people who “see themselves as eternal guardians of moral values” to get busy and pay for the wheat they stole from us.
A Putin fellating russophile accuses others of being irrational. So cute.
If I had any anger problems, and I don’t. I would not be solving them the russian way which is by drunken rape and other forms of subhuman behaviour.
See, when I feel angry I remind myself that certain problems tend to fix themselves out, like for example russia, where more children are aborted than delivered.
“Gee, I thought we all read the same scriptures. ”
Oh no, the russian Jesus is much better, he can throw a bottle of vodka much further than your Jesus.
The scriptures are a good starting point, but they’re just a bunch of words unless they lead to a positive outcome. Anybody can pretend to be pious, but it’s what’s in their hearts and how they arrived there is what counts.
You don’t need an official interpreter? Hope you never need brain surgery and decide self-service is the way to go 🙂
Wasn’t aware the church had ordered wheat from Canada. Ukraine was the bread basket until agricultural pursuits were discouraged. Haven’t seen much difference since the 1991 ‘independence.’
Russia has always believed in taking things by force? Guess they should have just lay down and let the Mongol Horde, Napoleon and Hitler take over. It’s no wonder the don’t trust the EU.
I’ve even heard grumbling from my Russian friends about the Uniate Church. If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry. Seems your mind’s made up that Russians are evil and you don’t want to be confused with the facts.
An interesting trio of essays and much I agree with. One of my jobs during the Cold War (“First Cold War”?) was to understand the opposition. To that end, I studied Russian language and doctrine and was put in a position to closely encounter real Russians. In discussions with my American equivalents, I was shocked to see their lack of ability to view things from the Russian perspective, something that was absolutely necessary if we were going to prevail in the long term. While I think the author overstates the religious and social issues, the ingrained patriotism of the average Russian and the underlying dream of Slavic supremacy is a real threat. Incidentally, my wife is half Ukrainian and any man who can understand his wife should have no problem tackling geopolitics – not saying I always understand my wife…
Seems your mind’s made up that Russians are evil and you don’t want to be confused with the facts.
That’s a common misconception among those raised on cold war propaganda. They’ve settled into a comfortable mind-set and they see no personal benefit in changing.
“Never attempt to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and annoys the pig.” ― Robert A. Heinlein
Wasn’t aware the church had ordered wheat from Canada.
Maybe not, but I bet they ate some of it.
set you free: “Chistianity’s central message was further diluted by the Protestant movement.”
Spoken like a true Roman Catholic who has no knowledge of grace and salvation without works.
About right. Once the west collapses under its own ignorance, they’ll wonder why and how it happened.
When all a person has is insults, stereotypes and put-downs, he’s already admitting defeat.
Enough pearls. Won’t even give more clues as to why the Russian civilization has survived for more than 1000 years.
“Apparently some people think God doesn’t have the power to make Himself clear without an ‘official’ interpreter”.
When you end up with 34000 Christian denominations in North America with a different interpretation you just gotta ask yourself, “what’s wrong with this picture”, doncha?
I’m no fan of the Bishop of Rome.
“Russian civilization”
An oxymoron with an emphasis on moron. What you have now is the Mongol civilization that wiped out what was Russian civilization before.
Do you get the impression that without and ‘official interpreter,’ anybody can claim they are a god unto themselves, pick and choose what suits them and invent religions?
Seems like a fail to me.
“That’s a common misconception among those raised on cold war propaganda.”
Funny that, I remember cold war vividly, from the other side of the iron curtain. You can spare me “noble russian” bullshit and save it for those who never met actual russians.
I can totally understand why the Russians you apparently met would have an unfavourable impression of you.
Russian Truth
From the horses mouth … how the KGB never stops doing what they do.
Read it and learn …
Once the west collapses under its own ignorance, they’ll wonder why and how it happened.
Heh, we’re not the ones who have to steal our food. Several billion from Canada alone.
Just think how effective we Christians would be if we were all one like Jesus constantly implores us to be in the Bible. Instead we divide and are conquered on important moral issues.
Much like any internal security force, I’d venture to say.
Amazing how much fear there is of Russia taking care of its agitators, yet no fear of the US, who bombed Serbia and created Kosovo, invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, and is killing people with unmanned drones in Pakistan.
But that’s the US, so it must be OK to stick its nose into anybody else’s business who as much as has a cross word to each other.
Ron Paul is correct on this issue. It’s time for the US to stop pretending it holds any type of superiority over other independent nations.
Orthodoxy’s priesthood is based on a lineage directly traced back to apostolic succession.
I could only wish more people would discover the richness of its traditions and the way the ancient understandings on a path to inner peace has been preserved for nearly 2000 years … unlike the make-believe Christian sects perpetrated by lay theologians.
Unfortunately, that would take effort some are unwilling to make and would force people to approach with an open mind.
Too bad that the drunken subhumans took 45 years to realize that they overstayed their welcome.
“But that’s the US, so it must be OK …”
Thats, right. As long as it pisses off either mooselimbs or russians it is indeed ok.
Wow. What a piece of work you are.
Just because you keep repeating slanders does not make them true.
I’m sorry for whatever suffering you may have endured, but the hatred you carry inside you will only destroy your spirit … if it hasn’t already.
My own parents lost everything they had, my mother was sent to Siberia when she was 10 years old under the old Soviet regime. My grandfather starved to death there.
Fortunately, she became deeply religious and forgave her tormenters even though she never forgot how her life was ripped apart.
Should I be bitter about the past because of the way my parents were treated? Not worth the aggravation.
Three essays which are too clever by far, and more wrong than right.
Ordinary decent Americans, like ordinary decent Canadians, have trouble grasping the
new reality of the Obama administration: that US foreign policy currently is both
foolish and evil. In essence its principal pillars are: the export of homosexuality
and other forms of deviant sexuality; and support for radical Islam. Also, they seem
to enjoy making mischief for its own sake. They certainly are not interested in the
welfare of Ukraine – I rather suspect that their Ukrainian interventions are purely
designed for mischief-making.
I am heartily sorry, and ashamed, of Canada’s intervention in Libya. We foolishly
and fecklessly supported the Obama administration’s treachery and betrayal of a
supplicant and defeated foe, to whom some understanding of protection had been
given. We Canadians helped radical Islamists while at the same
time acting as powder monkeys for the destruction of Pax Americana.
We are all now in the position that we must assume that the present US administration
is not acting in its own best interests, nor in the interests of international peace,
order, and good government. Unfortunately PMSH seems to have no clue about that.
Unfortunately, Russia (following the US’s Syria debacle) and China understand it
all too well.
I didn’t realize Stockholm Syndrome could be inherited.
“My own parents lost everything they had, my mother was sent to Siberia when she was 10 years old under the old Soviet regime. My grandfather starved to death there.”
And that was and an internal russian issue. I could not care less about russians offing other russians. As long as they do not export their subhuman mentality. But they do, they always do. And all who are unfortunate to share their border, all that the subhuman Siberian horde deems within their “sphere of influence” inevitably suffer.
Spare me the fake humane spiritual nonsense and leave it for the consumption of naive westerners. Don’t buy it. Know the reality of what russian boot feels like. That is one constant that never changes, tsarist, soviet, putinist, same boot. Like I said not nuking you in 45 was the worst possible decision.
Should you be bitter about the past? You have an opportunity to reject everything that is russian and you refuse to do so, yuo glorify it. You are beyond contempt, you are like mooselimb refugees celebrating Pislam. You are proud of your russian heritage, the heritage of slaughter, subjugation and bootlicking of your dictators.
the US, who bombed Serbia and created Kosovo, invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, and is killing people with unmanned drones in Pakistan.
…so it must be OK to stick its nose into anybody else’s business who as much as has a cross word to each other.
Ron Paul is correct on this issue. It’s time for the US to stop pretending it holds any type of superiority over other independent nations.
Exactly true. Can anyone name a country that the US invaded and occupied since Korea, that isn’t worse off than before the US meddled in their affairs?
All meddling was necessary to stop either Pislam or soviets. Most citizens of those countries are not worth saving and will always naturally revert to some form of dictatorship. May as well be our sonofbitch. Precious few who are worth something, typically benefit from US influence. And just to state the obvious: Batista was Better than Castro, Shah than Khomeini, Somoza or Contras than Sandinista and so on.
Kate, I’ve just had a thought. If you can do the drawing part, set you free can write the script for a resurrection of Hatlo’s History.
set U free, wear your ignorant leftist label (gay)proudly, you apparently are totally “people” stupid
“Orthodoxy’s priesthood is based on a lineage directly traced back to apostolic succession”.- actually, it’s the Bishop of Rome’s lineage that has the inside track on apostolic succession.
If you’re talking about the Russian Orthodox Church, it’s lineage traces back to the Powers That Be in Russia and is still attached at the hip for all intents and purposes.
Perhaps you might benefit from a little effort in the Christian history department. Google, The Christians, for an indepth lesson. Their books are absolutely beautiful.
The church of Rome has no monopoly on apostolic succession.
Forgive those who trespass against us
— Lord’s Prayer
Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do
— Christ on the cross, forgiving those who killed him before he died.
Common theme is forgiveness. Without it, inner peace cannot be achieved.
Stocklohm syndrome
— Ignorant analysis
On the contrary, I understand human nature quite well, thanks to ancient wisdoms.
Didn’t you say something about an open mind a ways back? Pretty much every Christian denomination acknowledges that the Catholic Church originated with Jesus and the apostles on Pentacost. They just believe that it was corrupted even though the Bible itself tells them that “the gates off hell shall not prevail against it”. The IT being His one, holy, catholic (universal) and apostolic Church.
Now, we all know that there have been corrupt clerics in Christ’s Church, including it’s Popes but they were too busy worshiping themselves to bother messing with doctrine, so therefore the deposit of faith is still intact in the Catholic Church.
The Catholic and Apostolic Church, yes. That terminology is mentioned in weekly Orthodox services but does not attribute superiority or any implied leadership role to the Bishop of Rome.
Rome separated themselves from the entire body of Eastern churches in 1054 when a papal envoy from Rome excommunicated the Metropolitan of Constantinople, one of the FIVE geographic centres of the Pentarchy.
Curiously enough, one of those geographic centres was in Jerusalem where the actual Biblical events took place. Alexandria (Egypt) still has a pope, tracing succession from Apostle Luke and Antioch rounds out the five. Is that pope any less worthy than the Bishop of Rome?
There were 12 apostles, not just one that ended up in Rome and all were involved in spreading the message, not just the one who ended up in Rome, which happened to be the seat of the world’s political power at the time.
When Prince Vladimir of Russia send envoys around the world circa 980 AD in the belief there was something better than paganism (reborn today as the rock and tree worshipping environmentalism), he chose Eastern rite over Islam and Judaism. Not Rome, Constantinople, possibly because of geographic proximity (not sure of the fine details).
Nobody ever appointed Rome leader of Christianity and the Orthodox Popes and Metropolitans recognize the status of the Bishop of Rome as equal to their own.
One more fact. There has never been the equivalent of Protestantism in the Orthodox world, which was the entire world outside of Rome’s influence.
Orwell was correct. Ignorance IS bliss.
Sorry. That would be Prince Vladimir of Kievan Rus, the capital of what was to become Russia located in Kiev at the time.
And, BTW, the baptism took place on the Crimean peninsula.
“Rome separated themselves from the entire body of Eastern churches in 1054 when a papal envoy from Rome excommunicated the Metropolitan of Constantinople” – if Rome did the excommunicating it stands to reason that it was the authority.
“There were 12 apostles, not just one that ended up in Rome and all were involved in spreading the message, not just the one who ended up in Rome” – yeah, but who did Jesus give the keys to and say, “this is Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church”??? It wasn’t St. Luke.
“When Prince Vladimir of Russia send envoys around the world circa 980 AD in the belief there was something better than paganism (reborn today as the rock and tree worshipping environmentalism), he chose Eastern rite over Islam and Judaism. Not Rome”. – so you’re saying Prince Vlad instituted the Russian Orthodox Church? Interesting. Hmmmmmm. Jesus or Vlad. Jesus or Vlad. I’m torn.
“Orwell was correct. Ignorance IS bliss”. – well then, you must be ecstatic. 🙂
Perhaps it is over simplification but basically a nomadic steppe culture, subject to recurring migrating invaders, invaders from Asia, who left their influence…..then the Vikings showed up….although assimilated they added a cultural influence.
Then to complete the recipe, Genghis Khan’s spawn rode in on them.
The funny thing about these cultural assimilations…is that they produce a hybred culture….facets of the assimilated culture survive.
The Cossacks are a classic example…fiercely independent, Christian Russians whose dress, way of life, military tactics seem direct copies of the Tartars.
Some find Russians to be dour and vicious. My experience is different…..beneath the dour façade is a cherry rascal, courageous but unfortunately totally lacking empathy for perceived enemies.
Probably insufficient sampling…..
.. far more Ukrainian than Russian, those Cossacks 😉
“My own parents lost everything they had, my mother was sent to Siberia when she was 10 years old under the old Soviet regime. My grandfather starved to death there.”
As long as there was russia there was Siberia, as long as there was Siberia russains would send other russians to die there. Invariably both the sender and one being sent were proud to be russian. Circle of life Simba. Or maybe God’s way to make sure that there are not too many russians polluting the planet.
My father was of Cossack ancestry and he considered himself Russian, not Ukranian.
And this affected you personally in what way?
Since God is love, I’m sure his sentiments are not in agreement with your irrational hatred of all Russians.
Unless your understanding of God’s nature is different than mine.
As my mother and various priests used to say … if you can’t forgive another human being, how can you expect God to forgive you?
