  1. Instead of Harper, how about sending a real Ukrainian there — somebody who at least knows the language … Ed Stelmach?

  2. OK. Can’t stand the silence.
I’ve got another candidate who would be better qualified to help Ukraine fall under the EU yoke.
    How about Don Mazankowski?
    Any other ideas?

  3. Unfortunately there isn’t a ‘Ukrainian side being offered that we Canadians can support. The protestors in Kiev were there for a paycheque and nothing else. Their presence was bought and paid for by Both sides. Any given protestor could be on any given side depending on who had offered him/her the largest amount of money for the day. Today the old pro Soviet Unionists are paying $100.00 while the old pro Nazis are paying $95 dollars so today I protest for the Soviet Unionists. Yesterday the Nazis were paying $95 and while the Soviet Unionists were paying $90 so I protested for the Nazis.

  4. Ah, silly me.
Apparently, international law applies only to those the west (US, NATO and the EU) would like to demonize.

  5. Well, as a general proposition, Mr. Harper offered Mr. Putin a quid pro quo the other week, with respect to the Arctic dispute — only Arctic nations should be involved in the Arctic, which automatically excludes China, France, Chermany, etc…
And everybody is surprised that Mr. Harper is calling in the markers? Really?
    Plus we got this:

  6. And had he acted in Canada’s interest then you would be fine with meddling? Correct? Good then drop the phony outrage.
Um how about no? How about not blowing hundreds of millions of dollars that could have been spent solidifying our military’s hold on the Arctic and then I’ll drop my completely genuine outrage.
Occasionally, maybe. Still better safe than sorry. Replace him with our sonofabitch at the earliest convenience. Probably better for all concerned, although mistakes are made from time to time.
That brilliant line of thinking is bankrupting America and got the US into the Iraq quagmire. Neocons: determined to never learn. Ever.
Saudis or Chinese know it well and it is precisely because they act the way you accuse “neocons” (whatever that means) of acting they are so successful and their power is growing. I’d like them to be less successful, same for the Putinista junta.
I do not care about your preferences or about self-destructive Russian/Saudi/Chinese powertrips. Leave me and my money out of your foreign policy schemes and delusions of grandeur.

  7. Good on Canadian Prime Minister Harper for visiting Ukraine and standing with them against the PUTIN led Russians.
Canada’s north is vulnerable to the Russian expansion and IS NEXT on the Russian expansion list.
I AM with YOU Stephen Harper!
    Joe Molnar, Woodstock, Ontario, canada

  8. Joe, in your considered opinion, does anyone from, or in, Eastern Europe, trust the Russians? A one word answer would suffice.

  9. Putin outwitted Obama, but has not counted on opposition from others in the West. Is Harper the de facto strong man of NATO, now? I would say, yes. He has exhibited respectable leadership, which none of he other NATO countries truly have in this crisis.
Good for the PM for outwitting Putin. Putin without question is seething, as he can do nothing to counter Harper’s action. This will tend to add spine to the German Bundestag, and increases the likelihood tht this will be turn out to be a strategic mistake for Putin.
Good for Harper for refusing Liberal and NDP participation, for their unserious responses to the situation.

  10. Good for the PM for outwitting Putin.
    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Putin without question is seething, as he can do nothing to counter Harper’s action.
    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *breathes* BWAAhAHAHAHAHA
This will tend to add spine to the German Bundestag
    LAUGHTER INTENSIFIES

  11. “Unfortunately there isn’t a ‘Ukrainian side being offered that we Canadians can support.”
Yes, there is, you just refuse to recognize it. The Ukrainian side is the one where the borders of Ukraine are inviolate, where the integrity of Ukrainian sovereignty is respected as per the 1994 agreement that Russia signed. That means the Russian Army has to stand down and leave Ukraine. One can argue all they want that the agreement wasn’t ratified by the U.S. Congress, but that has nothing to do with the other signatories who signed it and are bound by it.

  12. So tell me Oz are all your dreams in technicolour? Yes there are Ukrainian nationalist just like there are all kinds of other forces at play in that area. Unfortunately there isn’t one defining ideology that clearly defines Ukraine and its interests. Some parts of Ukraine want to be Russian others want to be European others ….. While I agree with PM Harper in his defense and advancement of freedom I’m not convinced that anyone in the power struggles for Ukraine are interested in anything more than advancing their own power and prestige. I liken this situation to Libya where Canada foolishly rushed in to help get rid of Gaddafi only to discover we were helping Al-Qaeda.

  13. who signed it and are bound by it.
I never signed anything. The Ukraine was stupid to trust us and throw away its defenses for a piece of paper. “You f*cked up…you trusted us!”

  14. Yes, all my dreams are in color.
Look Asshole, no matter what one group of Ukrainians wants or another group of Ukrainians wants, it is for Ukrainians to work out, NOT for the Russians to INVADE.
I can see you and many others here are Russian sympathizers, but just because Ukrainians have issues is not justification for foreign military intervention.
Now, because of Russia’s actions, we will be intervening too whether or not you like it or understand it.
And when we do, Russia will be the enemy and so too will you be.

  15. The fact is Russia will go to war for its warm water ports. No questions there.
If Putin tries to take over the whole Ukraine there will be a huge war.
Lets let the Russians & Ukrainians decide first what they want. Than do something when asked. If the military intervenes.

  16. no matter what one group of Ukrainians wants or another group of Ukrainians wants, it is for Ukrainians to work out
Yup, we should stay the hell out of their affairs. It’s a situation between Russia, Crimea, and Ukraine that goes back centuries. It’s none of our business.
If you don’t like what’s going on over there, then jump on a plane and go over there and lay your life on the line for whatever it is you believe in.
In any case the government shouldn’t just shell out $220M of our tax dollars without debate in Parliament.

  17. So Oz thinks that PM Harper going to Ukraine is going to keep the Russians from invading …. Okey Dokey.

  18. Ugh how about you would be equally outraged had Harper been building furthers north.?
Admit it, the truth will set you free.
“That brilliant line of thinking is bankrupting America and got the US into the Iraq quagmire. “
    Been swalklowing Alinsky much?
Iraq was a mistake, the shithole should have been colonized (along with the rest if middle east sans Israel), and exploited to civilized world’s content. The handful of Iraqis worth savings would benefit from that. The rest can pound sand as far as I am concerned.
“I do not care … delusions of grandeur.”
Keep pretending you’re not an invested useful idiot. I am sure someone will buy it.

  19. “The fact is Russia will go to war for its warm water ports. No questions there.”
    None EVER threatened their ports.
    Got it?
    EVER!
The first thing the new government did was to assure Putin that all agreements regarding their Black Sea Bases still stand. None in current Ukrainian government is retarded enough to pick a fight with Putin, in fact they want the exact opposite.
It is Putin who cannot afford not to have a conflict and useful idiots like spinal turd and north of 60 are screwing up his carefully crafted image.

  20. “Yup, we should stay the hell out of their affairs. ”
Still pretending to be an isolationist? Come on, grow a pair and make a stand for Putin. You know you want to.

  21. The fact is Russia will go to war for its warm water ports. No questions there.
If Putin tries to take over the whole Ukraine there will be a huge war.
Lets let the Russians & Ukrainians decide first what they want. Than do something when asked. If the military intervenes.

Correct. Backing off is exactly what Canada and others should be doing. Russia knows better than to try to conquer Ukraine, they want Crimea back as part of Russia so there’s no ‘foreign’ control of the Black Sea ports. It’s been relatively peaceful since Russia took control, as compared with the violence and bloodshed in the past several months. Canada should back off and not take sides, and let this play out peacefully. If there is military intervention, then there is reason to re-evaluate a hands-off approach for now. The worst thing Canada can do is inflame an already tense situation by butting in when unasked.

  22. One of the most valuable lessons in parenting is to ignore other people’s kids when they misbehave. It applies equally well to international diplomacy and internet forums.

  23. Ugh how about you would be equally outraged had Harper been building furthers north.?
Sometimes I can’t talk no good either but I try not to post when I’m drunk. Are you asking if I would be outraged if Harper build a defense force further north? Answer: probably not! I might even like it! You know what could help finance that project? THE 220 MILLION DOLLARS OF TAX-EXTORTED MONEY HARPERTARD IS BLOWING ON UKRAINE.
Iraq was a mistake, the shithole should have been colonized (along with the rest if middle east sans Israel), and exploited to civilized world’s content.
Leave me and my fellow citizens out of your bloody delusions of grandeur. Please go back to the 18th century where your views are in keeping with the times.
Keep pretending you’re not an invested useful idiot. I am sure someone will buy it.
Keep on talking like an imbecile, imbecile.

  24. I should have made it more readable. I meant The fact is Russia will go to war (imagined or real) for its warm water ports. No questions there.
Frankly all the players in this stand off want something.
China wants Taiwan . This is a political fight to see just how weak Obama is.
The carnivorous Dictators are watching. They can smell a free dinner when the Shepard on the other inside is a sheep to.

  25. Since you basically said the same thing to me a bunch of comments back… THEY’RE NOT WORTH YOUR TIME. Though the “forgive them for they know not what they do” gets tougher all the time.

  26. “Answer: probably not! I might even like it! ”
Suuuuuuure you would, as long as it remains a strictly theoretical possibility you’ll all for it.
“Please go back to the 18th century where your views are in keeping with the times.”
Damn and what a grand century that one and the pone after that these were. Too bad there was not enough will after WWII to go for a hat trick. Oh well. Better late than never.

  27. Dude, Putin is not an idiot and Russia does not want to go war. Putin needs a cold war to deal with internal problems. That is all there is to it. He needs to purge internal opposition and then go after muslims at home. Ukraine is just a bargaining chip. I am sorry, all my sympathy to Ukraine aside he plays in a different league, he plays chess while Ogabe, Merkel and co play checkers.
Putin keeps pushing, while idiot isolationists and those who do not want to die Danzing again are getting in his way. He must be cursing at all those formerly useful idiots that are trying to justify his actions in a western media. Damn, what is a KGB colonel supposed to do to finally get western public opinion decisively against him? Will those dhimmis ever grow a pair?

  28. Guilty as charged…
    … but but but…
… formerly useful idiots, now adrift are such a rewarding target… they really think that Putin wants Crimea and that their job is to help him get her… so cute, so pathetic.
