Administrators feared the American-flag shirts would enflame the passions of Latino students celebrating the Mexican holiday. Live Oak High School, in the San Jose suburb of Morgan Hill, had a history of problems between white and Latino students on that day.

  18. EBD, I tried to check on that quotation of the century via Snopes. There doesn’t seem to be a clear trail that would attribute this to Vaclav Klaus. While I agree with the sentiment, it seemed…too convenient. Similar to the rules about immigrants that have been around for a while and been attributed variously to the Australian Prime Minister and Vladimir Putin. I wonder if you have a better source than I was able to find.

There will be some in the know who are speculating whether, if they keep Hillary Clinton’s health issues a secret until the last minute and have her withdraw suddenly, they can then try to spring a Presidential decree for “fairness” that he can go for a third term because their side won’t have time to prepare a new candidate.
    Not saying it will happen, but commenting on the unswerving devotion of his acolytes in the face of all evidence of the disaster that his regime has been. As has been said before, he is more the symptom than the cause of what has gone horribly wrong with the American republic.

  23. Rita, I didn’t fact-check/verify the Vaclav Klaus quote. I’m a lot more meticulous about verifying/double-checking information/sources for main page posts than for Reader Tips, especially when the source is a blog post or a Tweet, as opposed to, say, the WSJ.
    If a link contains a potentially libelous allegation of serious wrongdoing, though, I double-check and verify even if it’s a Reader Tip.
    You’re quite right that the Klaus quote does seem a bit suspect – or too good to be true – and may well be apocryphal.

  30. I received two replies from my email to my MP within a few hours. They are a little lengthy and have condensed them to leave the important parts.
    From my MP: Chris Warkentin Join Conservative Government in Defense of Law Abiding Long-Gun Owners
    February 28, 2014 – Today in the House of Commons, Chris Warkentin, Member of Parliament, stood in defense of law-abiding long-gun owners. Warkentin asked our government to respond to the sudden and unexpected decision by the RCMP to reclassify the sport shooting Swiss Arms Classic rifle from its non-restricted status to prohibited status. Many Peace Country residents reached out to Mr. Warkentin to voice their concerns about this disturbing and sudden change.
    In Question Period, Mr. Warkentin asked,
    “Mr. Speaker, yesterday, we were shocked to learn that the RCMP had reclassified hundreds of sports shooting rifles from non-restricted to prohibited. This happened after they had been legally sold in Canada for more than a decade. While there have been no criminal incidents reported with this rifle, with the stroke of the RCMP’s pen, individuals who may have owned this rifle legally for the last 12 years are considered criminals as of today. I wonder if the parliamentary secretary could please tell the House what the government’s position is on this reclassification and confiscation scheme?”
    The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Roxanne James, was quick to respond saying,
    “Mr. Speaker, we are in fact very troubled by the situation that has arisen from the Swiss Arms rifle. This decision was made by bureaucrats and not by politicians. That is why the Minister of Public Safety has ordered an urgent review of this unfortunate decision. I would like to let all Canadians know that all options are on the table to ensure that no firearms owner who acted in good faith suffers any consequences as a result of this terrible situation. All of the options are being explored on a very urgent basis.”
    Warkentin was pleased to hear that the Minister was taking concrete steps to address the reclassification. Praising the Minister’s action, Warkentin later said “I am thankful that the Minister is taking this issue so seriously. We need to ensure that the rights of law-abiding gun owners are not infringed upon by bureaucrats that that seemingly prohibits reasonable firearms at will.”
    The Swiss Arms rifle had recently been reclassified as a prohibited weapon by the RCMP despite having never been involved in a criminal incident in Canada. Law-abiding owners of this firearm would have been considered criminal by the RCMP even though they had legally owned the weapon for up to 12 incident free years prior to this decision. The government promptly intervened regarding this senseless decision. While a review of this decision is underway, law-abiding Canadians that purchased this weapon in good faith will not be punished for simply owning a sporting rifle.
    Our government will continue to respect the rights of law-abiding Canadian firearms owners. In addition to this action, our government has delivered on its promise to abolish the Long-Gun Registry, a measure that respected law-abiding firearms owners across Canada.
    From Peter MacKay: Conservatives have always stood up for law-abiding gun owners.
    That’s why I was troubled to learn of a decision made by unelected bureaucrats to prohibit a number of rifles imported from Switzerland.
    I want to assure you that I will not let law-abiding gun owners suffer as a result of this situation.
    These now “prohibited” firearms had been classified as non-restricted for more than a decade. The RCMP has no idea how many of these rifles exist, and they have not announced any plan on how to deal with those who purchased these firearms lawfully.
    I want to assure you all options are on the table to fix this situation. I will also be taking steps to make sure this never happens again.
    The actions of these bureaucrats are absolutely unacceptable and I will be announcing concrete measures in the coming days.
    Our Conservative Government is on your side — and we will always stand up for the rights of law-abiding firearms owners.

  35. Thanks EBD. I wasn’t trying to nitpick. And if it wasn’t said by Klaus (or indeed by anyone) it’s a valid observation. It has probably been said by many, but not in such a concise manner. I’m interested in how the internet can implant plausible things that eventually become the accepted narrative. At what point does something veer into a myth which thereafter becomes accepted fact? We have seen a lot of this in the climate discussion.

  37. Rita, that’s not nitpicking. If I wrote that Sigmund Freud said (X) on October 14, 1894, and you pointed out that he actually said it on October 15 of the same year, that might be nitpicking, inasmuch as the precise date (likely) wouldn’t be a material issue; a falsely attributed quote, on the other hand, is very much a material issue.
    You’re right that when false information (e.g. the behaviour of “bystanders” in the Kitty Genovese case) is cited often enough it can eventually turn into an “everybody knows” putative fact. The antidote to this sort of misinformation is to question the veracity of a particular piece of information, or the source of an apocryphal quote, etc — which is exactly what you did.
