Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

There’s probably lots of reasons to boycott Russian goods but to do so because of their “oppression” of sodomites and lesbians is not one of them.
It would be nice to see American leftists stop protesting the Keystone Pipeline and the “tar sands” — Canada’s a very gay-friendly country and Saudi Arabia isn’t. Guess they think it’s much cooler (and easier) to boycott Russian vodka than Saudi Arabian oil.
As for the Russians, who are we to get all imperialist on them and impose our Western ideals on them?
Oppression in quotes? Really? That seems to be real oppression “Russian Style” to me anyway. Merely indicative of the lack of respect the former/current/future communist “Vlad the Impaler” Putin, has for his people. Do we even buy or sell anything from/to Russia anymore? As far as the leftists protesting, their hypocrisy is demonstrated every single day.
I ain’t worried.
Obama will just whip out the old “Red Line”.
That’ll scare ’em.
Just to make sure that I am clear on the gestalt these days, I have to ask: gays and those with gender confusion problems are now the most important people on the planet, right? Everything, everywhere, is entirely about them — is that correct?
Just want to make sure.
First of all, I don’t watch the Olympics. I switch the channel as quickly as possible. This is not because I hate sports or overt displays of nationalism. I have always enjoyed playing sports (being a spectator bores me) and I see nothing at all wrong with national pride. My problem is 1) the location of the Olympics overwhelms the coverage 2) the media reporting is more like a sappy daytime drama combined with a mind numbing talk show. Blech.
If there’s one thing that could be done to improve the Olympics it would be to have several permanent Olympic sites. Account for diversity if you must but have some minimum standards – reasonably reliable snow in winter, for example. The billions used to build brand new venue, with the accompanied social upheaval and economic pain for the citizens of the host country, could be used to improve and expand permanent sites. Add a new host every 25 years or so and give them more time to build the damn thing. Surely there is better, less expensive ways to showcase your country if that’s the biggest objection.
Bah … who is “boycotting” Russia?
Defective people hoping to be noticed.
Russia has ONE significant export and that is natural gas. Their customers are mainly Europeans and the unfortunate and compromised Ukraine.
Nobody is boycotting Russia.
What bitterclinger and Lickmuffin said. It seems that the most important thing in the world today is brainwashing our children and grandchildren that they should become gay. It is the new “in thing”. Let those that want to be gay be gay, but don’t shove it down our throats.
As Colby Cosh said, ” And now Russia has come under fire because its federal legislature chose an awkward moment to criminalize the dissemination of “propaganda for non-traditional sexual relations“ to minors”. It is not illegal to be gay or associate with other gays; just not proselytize in schools.
This has become almost to the point of detesting them.
That should be he-or-she-cott, misogynists.
‘As for the Russians, who are we to get all imperialist on them and impose our Western ideals on them?’
Zing. Good one.
Or maybe Russia thinks their moral standards are none of our business. They would be correct in that assumption.
Rand Paul is right. The cultural, race, lifestyle and gender hangups on the right will be the death of conservative parties. This does not mean I support radical GLTB, feminist or racism activists. Both the right and the left have their fringes that would rather fight to the death about the cultural issues most voters don’t care about than addressing the ones that are important to most – the economy, for instance.
The Olympics are about accomplishment in sport — not who’s licking and sticking whom.
Boycott Calgary. Its been flying the rainbow flag now for 2 weeks. I heard someone say that’s longer than normally allowed for a cause.
There are many things to be said about this.
First of all, the post-modern decadent West enjoys the favouritism it inserts into identity politics on which it now thrives. It is not the Georgians, Ukrainians or Russian bloggers or journalists who need attention but homosexuals who apparently are some sort of endangered species.
Secondly, the athlete-activists are the biggest bunch of hypocrites and cowards I’ve seen. One Olympian (some Australian chickie) declared that she would “rip” Putin AFTER the Winter Games. Why not before? Why not during? If this issue was so important to her, why not sacrifice on principle? Others have. Why not her? She won’t because she is scared and selfish. Russian activists will be in jail long after she returns to sunny Australia where her lifestyle and attitudes are not only tolerated but encouraged. She will not be arrested or even debated.
So much for principle.
Thirdly, the law passed was not actually as draconian as people are made to believe. Fines are imposed for anyone attempting to proselytise to minors, not adults. Why should special-interest groups be able to walk into schools and inundate kids with their agenda without the parents’ knowledge or consent? If these issues are so important, why not air them in a public arena where adults, who have the wherewithal to deal with various issues, can openly debate them or ignore them? Of course, this leads to Putin’s great sin of arresting or killing journalists and NO ONE wants to deal that. It would take guts to really stand up to that sort of bullying. Besides- it’s not a flavour-of-the-month sort of thing so who cares?
Again, so much for principle.
Gotta get me a pair of those super cool looking f*ck-U Obamba glasses Putin is wearing, anyone know the brand?
The gays and Muslims will whine and whine for more until thier in charge and your in a dungeon. Flip a coin to guess which dungeon would be worse.
Patt Condell did a good video on the gay rights movment not so long ago. Easy to find on utube.
Who is hung up on identity politics? The left. Nothing can get done because of them. When ANY issue depends on how (insert own qualifier here) one is, how can major issues be resolved?
Besides, anything the left suggests is nutty. Raise the minimum wage to fourteen dollars an hour? Okay…
Russia is in the top 3* gold exporting countries, along with China and South Africa.
*last time I looked
“Much of the controversy over the location of these Olympic Winter Games has orbited around the Russian government’s treatment of gays and lesbians.”
How times change.
Used to be we had to check to make sure the Soviet Women’s Team were really women!
I think the further you go to the left the crazier the ideas become and further you go to the right the crazier the ideas become. The two extremes share many similarities. For one the inability to differentiate between policies they hate and people they hate.
For example: Right – Instead of attacking the agenda of gay activists it becomes I hate gays.
Left- They attack white men rather than any promote gender/racial equality.
The extremes both want government to prohibit things they oppose rather than use persuasion or accept other people’s individual freedom.
Right – drugs, prostitution, gay marriage
Left – smoking/e-cigs, spanking, large sugary drinks, right to work, school choice
There’s more similarities but I’ll stop there. Major issue will not be resolve by either the extreme left or right. Neither one wants a solution. They just enjoy fighting, being angry and feeding off their groups prejudices. Major issues will be resolved when people stop listening to them – they get far too much attention from the media and political parties
The domestic policies of other countries are none of our business. If we don’t like it we can refuse to use their products, or go there and protest. We sure as hell wouldn’t like them meddling in our domestic affairs would we?
I don’t think so. The left is far more pre-occupied with these social issues than the right is. It’s not like the left can come up with sane economic plans or something. Even so, these issues do have to be discussed at some point and resolved if possible. I think it’s easier for some voters to want to ignore these issues but they do so at their own peril. Culture shapes voters. If a voter is told socialism is just grand, he is hardly going to vote for a fiscally conservative party or candidate. Also, leftists (as you pointed out) paint others as haters, ect and not worth voting for. That certainly has an effect on what changes a government can make. If things can be discussed and dealt with in proper measure one may find balance.
What percentage of the registered voters is intelligent enough, and interested enough to consider the issues when voting?
One product U.S. buys from Russia is rocket engines. It is not a large trade in monetary value, about $50 million dollars a year, but it continued uninterrupted since about 1998.
A more significant export U.S. buys is titanium, partly in ingots, partly in 80% ready parts. North America (including Canada) does not have much domestic Titanium.
There’s also a significant intellectual property trade, mostly in software. Kaspersky and Parallels started as Russian companies and keep significant part of their workforce in Russia.
U.S. government also buys rides for astronauts on Russian spaceships, at least temporarily. That probably counts more as a service than a product, however.
Canada is quite a bit more leftist than the US yet we have a conservative government. Not just any old conservative party but one that originated as a grassroots protest party that challenged and defeated the establishment, Old Canada conservative party (but now seems determined to become Red Tories but that’s a sad tale for another time).
In Canada, the CPC learned to avoid the social conservative issues that piss people off. Middle of the road voters are fine with tough on crime, lower taxes, smaller government, less power for unions etc. They are turned off by abortion, religious fundamentalism, gay bashing, xenophobia and anything close to paternalism/misogyny. The problem with those issues is that social conservatives think they are just insulting gays, minorities, and women but they are also insulting the friends, family and coworkers of those same people. Not a good way to win elections and if you can’t win elections then you can’t slowly move voters in your political direction.
BTW, I’m not a fan of the left/right description. I like the individual freedom/statist description better. Statism makes strange bedfellows. Where extreme social conservative and radical progressives meet up with”moderates” like David Brooks and Paul Krugman.
Left-Right is overly simplistic. The Nolan Chart gives a better perspective.

Message for the slow of learning from the trendy left( AKA progressives wh think Ruski tyranny fell with the Berlin wall) – I’m speaking very slowly here – Russia is not your BFF. Got it? Has nothing to do with poofters being whipped – It has to do with the fact they have designs on stealing mineral wealth from Canada’s arctic jurisdiction and are willing to get militarily belligerent about it.
If you’re too stupid to know friend from foe don’t leave the house without a guardian.
Those whom people think pass for conservatives here avoid certain issues out of political survival, not because they feel more strongly about the economy than anything else. It is also a blanket aspersion to cast on those who might view abortion as an issue of great moral, social or even political importance as single-issue voters. Taxes, ect are also important to them but so is the protection of human life. By the way, if the Western world aborts itself out of existence, who fills the void?
But I digress…
You can avoid certain issues some of the time but not all of the time. As I said before, some issues, like the economy, will never be touched or can even be mucked up if those for whom identity politics are everything take the helm.
