Reader Tips

I’ve always felt – still do – that tonight’s Tips music selection is best suited to the female voice, but the controlled strength and depth of feeling of tonight’s performer brings something different to an incredibly beautiful song: Here’s Luciano Pavarotti in a live performance of Ave Maria. Listen and weep.
The comments are open, as always, for your Reader Tips.

  1. I don’t know much about virgins, I was never lucky enough to find one myself, much less sing about them. However I went to school with Catholic nuns…
aren’t most nuns supposed to be virgins?

  2. north of 60:
I don’t recall if virginity was a requirement for membership. In the 1960’s, most of them left the order to join the rest of the sinners in the free world. They soon forgot their vows. You brought back good memories of my favorite movie ”The Sound of Music.”

  3. Government can spin it however it likes, but one look at the real numbers and anyone with even basic comprehension of math can see it’s a death spiral that would take more than a few miracles to pull out of. The SS economic Titanic is sinking fast, while the band plays on.

  4. Back at the NOAA, the manipulation of the US temperature record continues unabated. Stephen Goddard posts the dirty details on his website:

It seems that the warmest decade of the past century being in the 1930’s was completely unacceptable given that government policy is that atmospheric CO2 concentration sets the temperature of the planet. Thus, the long process of “adjusting” official US temperatures which are becoming more disconnected from reality with each year. The news that US temperatures continue to set records must be comforting to those living through the coldest winter the US has experienced in decades. The only comforting aspect of this process is that it might induce some of the more deluded US LIV’s to head to the beach in below zero temperatures and freeze to death when they believe US climate propaganda rather then their own senses.

  5. “Ontario’s green fiasco is a lesson to us all”
    “Ontario is reeling.
The “Ontario Green Energy Program,” introduced four years ago by then-Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty’s Liberal government, has proved to be an utter disaster.
A public inquiry has brought to light the sheer size of this white elephant.”

“Hydro rates zap Black and Decker site”
“High hydro rates make it unlikely Brockville’s former Black and Decker site will attract a new manufacturer, its owner says.
Steve Berezan, owner of Langley, British Columbia-based Stonewater Properties, said recent troubles with the Hydro One bill of his only manufacturing tenant, Camalor, along with coming hydro rate increases have made chasing further industry a non-starter.
“You’re never going to get a manufacturer in Ontario with that kind of power bill,” said Berezan.
Brockville economic development director Dave Paul confirmed Friday American jurisdictions are “poaching” the local industrial base, trying to lure companies south with promises of cheaper energy.”

“Listening to CBC radio’s weekly opinion sampler, Cross-Canada Checkup, on the Sunday before New Year, I was treated to a random specimen of public perspectives and sentiments on issues regarded as having been of major importance in the year coming to an end.
I learned, inter alia, that global warming was a dire threat to the continuance of the species.
I discovered that our conservative government has pursued an agenda injurious to the national interest. And so on. That global warming has been largely discredited and that temperatures have remained stable for the last 17 years was, apparently, news to the coast-to-coast participants in the program.

  7. British Government “nudges” citizens into stealing. Not surprising. Deliberately and dramatically pushing up the price of a product follows the same path as any form of prohibition:
Sin-> sin taxes -> black market
Do this for an essential product and you virtually force people to steal. What’s next, Jean Valjean treatment for energy thieves or a relook at the Laffer Curve in regards to energy taxes/policy?
Revealed: How middle-class families are turning to crime by getting specialist gangs to ‘hotwire’ their gas and electricity supplies to beat soaring energy bills
-Power theft costs £500million a year, and companies pass the cost on to us, pushing our annual bills up by £30 each
-Gas and electricity prices are rising at up to eight times the rate of earnings
-Individuals are using internet guides to ‘hotwire’ their own power supplies
-Landlords and businesses pay gangs who dig up streets to steal energy
-Illegal cannabis farmers are responsible for a third of electricity theft
-New TV investigation shows the lengths people go to to get power for free

  9. Canadians now rank among the highest users of antidepressants in the world: in 2011, the last year for which comparative figures are available, Canada reported the third highest level of consumption of antidepressants among 23 member nations surveyed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
The OECD figures, contained in its recently released “Health at a Glance” report, shows Canadians consumed 86 daily doses of antidepressants for every 1,000 people per day in 2011, more than the United Kingdom (71 doses per day), Spain (64) and Norway (58). Canada was behind only Iceland (106 doses per 1,000 people per day) and Australia (89 doses) among the countries surveyed.

  10. I got a solicitation from Justin’s team today. They want me to sign up as a member, I’m considering it, but Groucho’s words come to mind.
    Anyways, on the application they have this question;
Are you of aboriginal ancestry? (optional)
    WHY ???
I clicked that I was, that doesn’t get you a free membership.
So why the specific race question?
I think that they want a database of supporters that they can trot in front of the CBC’s cameras whenever they feel the need to play the race card.
If you are a Conservative leaning native, sign up for the ride. I would do it myself, but they would catch on eventually.
