In May of 2007 Nicolas Sarkozy was elected as French President. Five months later, he divorced his wife Cécilia Attias, and four months after that he married former model Carla Bruni. Now, I don’t know if French actress Julie Gayet, the woman that current French President François Hollande was recently caught having an affair with, or his official partner Valerie Trierweiler (who was hospitalized after hearing of the affair), or Segolène Royal, the mother of his four children, do any singing, but Bruni does: here’s her sultry rendition of L’Amour. It’s a nice break from politics..

The John Kerry State Department’s War On Women.

An Italy-based American diplomat brazenly bedded staffers and hookers, fabricated expense reports, and knowingly served rotten meat to a visiting British consul general, a blockbuster Brooklyn federal lawsuit charges…. Moore ran the consulate like his own personal party pad and openly denigrated female staffers as clueless subordinates, the suit states.
Howard’s suit names Secretary of State John Kerry as the sole defendant. The Post first reported in June her assertion she was run out of the foreign service after complaining about Moore’s dalliances with subordinates and hookers. … The suits states that Howard began working at the consulate in 2010 and alleges she soon learned that Moore had impregnated a staffer and forced her to have an abortion. She complained about the unseemly tryst to a superior but was told to keep her mouth shut, according to court papers. …
“Donald Moore, Consul General of the United States Consulate, orally advised staff that he used women for ‘sexercise,’” the suit states.

Some, wistful optimistic punters here occasionally ask the eternal question: how can we convince a liberal friend or family member that _________?
I have a simple answer: fuggeddaboudid!
To wit: I have a friend who describes himself as a social liberal/fiscal conservative. But he’s really a liberal because this hybrid doesn’t actually exist in the known universe (except for libertarians whom he despises). Strangely, tho, he’s very solicitous of the welfare of soldiers. Recently I sent him a Frontpagemag.com piece about how physical standards had been relaxed in the US military in order to get women into combat. I naively assumed that he would be concerned about this and that we would therefore share some common ground.
Nope. LOL. I got a blistering attack over some anti-diversity snark in the piece.
And Lo and Behold, today at American Digest (and thank you again EBD) a quote from de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, which I now feel compelled to re-read soon.
Unlike Ontario, at least P.E.I. will admit to making a mistake. I’m surprised the CBC ran the story as it could upset a lot of tree huggers.

Estimates of the exact amount of rare earth minerals in wind turbines vary, but in any case the numbers are staggering. According to the Bulletin of Atomic Sciences, a 2 megawatt (MW) wind turbine contains about 800 pounds of neodymium and 130 pounds of dysprosium. The MIT study cited above estimates that a 2 MW wind turbine contains about 752 pounds of rare earth minerals.
To quantify this in terms of environmental damages, consider that mining one ton of rare earth minerals produces about one ton of radioactive waste, according to the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security. In 2012, the U.S. added a record 13,131 MW of wind generating capacity. That means that between 4.9 million pounds (using MIT’s estimate) and 6.1 million pounds (using the Bulletin of Atomic Science’s estimate) of rare earths were used in wind turbines installed in 2012. It also means that between 4.9 million and 6.1 million pounds of radioactive waste were created to make these wind turbines.
Not only do rare earths only obtained in China create radioactive waste residue, but according to the Chinese Society for Rare Earths, “one ton of calcined rare earth ore generates 9,600 to 12,000 cubic meters (339,021 to 423,776 cubic feet) of waste gas containing dust concentrate, hydrofluoric acid, sulfur dioxide, and sulfuric acid, [and] approximately 75 cubic meters (2,649 cubic feet) of acidic wastewater.”
The wind industry is dependent on rare earth minerals imported from China, the procurement of which results in staggering environmental damages.

“Global warming is nowhere to be found. The mean global temperature has not risen in 17 years and has been slowly falling for approximately the past 10 years. In 2013, there were more record-low temperatures than record-high temperatures in the United States.
At the end of the first week in January, a brutal spell of cold weather settled over most of the country. Multiple cold-temperature records were shattered across the country. Some sites experienced frigid conditions not seen since the 19th century. Chicago and New York City broke temperature records set in 1894 and 1896, respectively. These extremes were not singular, but exemplary of conditions throughout much of the continent. Temperatures in Chicago were so cold that a polar bear at the Lincoln Park Zoo had to be taken inside.”

Regarding Global Warming. I found this article which is pretty interesting. It is a PDF. “Arctic Warming is Not Greenhouse Warming: http://curryja.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/arno-arrak.pdf
The author is someone named Arno Arrak. He posts on a lot of climate change discussions, so someone may have come across his postings (or this document) previously. I think his strength is that he makes a lot of sense (unlike many of those climate scientists).
