To think I sent the CRTC some serious hate mail. I take a couple of the worst ones back, but we still don’t need them or their bureaucratic meddling. Let free enterprise reign and stop picking winners and losers. In other words, let the people decide what they want to watch
Now more people can choose to watch Ezra…rather than drown in a sea of political correctness.

This is the END of Canadian broadcasting as we know it!
Call the doctor, ring the bell, women in alleys….
peterj, very good point.
I think the crux of the situation is that CBC et al will now also see if their popularity is strong enough to see them through.
Given this “level playing field”, Sun News has similar potential to Fox News, it’s all down to the consumer. (What an opportunity for “conservative” activism which I realize is an oxymoron)
I remember when CNN was gonna crush Fox News…
All I am interested in is the least expensive cable package from Rogers which contains SNN.
I have a feeling it will be neither minimal or reasonable.
Not a level playing field, as CBC is still receiving funding to the tune of a billion $ a year. Defund the CBC.
Good news! Sun News Network: the little engine that could, with no thanks to the CRTC or any of the other state regulators in Canada. But at least the CRTC had to concede that demand for SNN is real and needs to be “allowed.”
Like peterj, I’d like to see an end to the CRTC.
I guess I can pat myself on the back for submitting a case for SNN’s existence in Canada. I really socked it to the CRTC about the CBC’s coasting along on taxpayer’s backs, especially when they have only 6% of market share — and get ad revenues on top of our $1.1 billion.
I can never get Sun News videos to play, for some darned reason.
As I understand the ruling (shorthand for “I don’t fully understand it”) based on reading online news reports about it, cable and satellite companies have to offer Sun News, meaning that they have to make it available to viewers who request and pay for it, either à la carte or as part of a package, but here’s the question I haven’t found an answer to (maybe Teyneke addresses it in the video I can’t get to play): Will the CBC and CTV News channels still be part of the basic (i.e. most minimal, mandatory) package?
Anyone?
If the CBC/CTV news channels are still part of all basic cable packages, then this ruling does NOT make it a level playing field.
@EBD
If you are attempting to watch SunNews vids and you have tracking blockers, allow Brightcove and they will play.
My interpretation is that ALL NEWS channels will be subject to these rules. This doesn’t include CBC, CTV Global etc regular programming, just their all news channels.
Can anyone clarify?
CBC, CTV, Global etc are multi-purpose channels that offer variety programming which includes some news. Sun is news only so I doubt if they will be part of the basic package. They will probably be basic in news groups that include (CBC) Newsworld, CNN, FOX, MSNBC,BBCWLD,HLN,(CTV)NEWSSN, AL JAZEERA, etc. That’s my take on what I’ve seen so far. Doubt if it will hurt CBC except in competition with Newsworld which will probably be forced into competition for viewers.
This great news. Depending on this ruling reads, at least it is a big step in the right direction.
At last!!
Okay, I just checked my cable provider’s site: CTV and CBC’s News channels are indeed part of the basic cable package, i.e. they get mandatory carriage, so you get them whether you want them or not.
Under the recent CRTC’s ruling, if I understand it correctly, providers just have to make Sun News available to customers, who’ll then have the option of ordering it and paying for it, either on its own or as part of a bundle.
Again, not a level playing field.
Superior headline: CRTC further meddles in Canadian broadcast market, takes away Canadians’ freedom for fake ‘choices’.
Sun News isn’t going to succeed. It just isn’t happening.
I think most have missed what has happened here. Very nice that Sun lives, but more importantly it is the beginning of the end for the CBC, and Hubie et al know it. The rules have quietly been altered in such a way that the current status quo can no longer survive. It’s now just a matter of time.
Canadians have not been offered fair and reasonable access to SunnewsTV because the MSM regard it as a financial and political threat to their dominance.
Presently, the MSM has nearly a monopoly on television viewership. It uses that to control the political agenda.
That explains why it favours ad hominum attacks and drive-by smears and non-stop sensationalizing of select news stories. It tries to drive public opinions politically. Largely, it succeeds
When SunnewsTV gets higher audience numbers than CBC news, and advertising dollars start to follow, it will be well on it’s way to breaking up the “media party’s (political) monopoly.
People will gradually come to realize much of the MSM’s news coverage is one snow job after another.
Just for the record, LAS, are you in favour of the CBC receiving over a billion dollars a year from Canadian taxpayers?
The difference is, I will willingly pay for Sun News, where as I resent being taxed to have CBC lie to me.
Same here John. We’ll pay as we never watch Bell media’s CTV and won’t pay anymore for DISCOVERY channels that they also own. Haven’t watched cbc for a decade now, same for global.
In typical liberal/socialist manner….you actually believe what you just said. If you think the CRTC has just took away freedom of choice “fake or real” you are truly delusional – like all liberal/socialists. The CRTC only restricts choices. They do so with every edict they send out.
This edict is not beneficial in any way to SNN. CTV and CBC Newsworld remain on the must have cable tier. Even CNN has a better channel placement on most cable operators in Canada than SNN.
It is frightening and sad that people such as yourself continue to believe these things. Someday you will grow up. But, alas, I may not witness that day.
Is that a Luke Jordan Cocaine Blues reference? Good song.
EBD: No and I think I have been pretty clear about that.
Sporty: Cannot make sense of your post. When SunnewsTV gets higher audience numbers than CBC news, and advertising dollars start to follow, it will be well on it’s way to breaking up the “media party’s (political) monopoly.
Adorable.
Shaw Direct charges me about $2 a month for Sun News TV. If that is all it takes then what the heck? Does anyone under 40 watch the News anyway?
I haven’t watched the CBC in many years outside of HNIC. Seriously, who does? It is a typical taxpayer boondoggle which the current government continues to fund. They hid behind a bunch of BS but continue taking taxpayer money. If Harper was a true conservative he would tack on a referendum question about CBC funding in 2015. That idea along with many other Reform ‘reforms’ are now on the trash heap of Canadian politics.
I guess the business of running Canada is simply to complicated for this redneck to understand.

Fantastic news!
Of course there are two sides to a coin and we will now see if the popularity of sun is strong enough to see them through. I hope so.
