The Sound Of Settled Science

“This is hard to explain with our current models”

An exploded star some 3.8 billion light-years away is forcing scientists to overhaul much of what they thought they knew about gamma-ray bursts – intense blasts of radiation triggered, in this case, by a star tens of times more massive than the sun that exhausted its nuclear fuel, exploded, then collapsed to form a black hole. […]
“Some of our theories are just going down the drain,” said Charles Dermer, an astrophysicist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico…

  1. Rob Ford. The fairy king of this star was so disgusted by the antics of Mayor Ford that he blew up his own solar system. This will raise awareness of Global Warming.

  2. In this case it appears that a “failure to predict” in the current model is leading to a revised model. In the case of AGW models ………. not so much.

  3. Unfortunately, “climate scientists” have pretty much ruined it for the rest of science. Mention “model”, and if it isn’t made from balsa and tissue paper, and flies, or glued together from plastic parts, its probably pretty much useless.

  4. Astronomers understand they don’t have all their science settled, it’s a continuing body of work. With far, far less mathematical certainty in their methodology, “climate scientists” make no effort to disprove, and therefore explore the veracity of their work. Given our chaotic climate, they should be the most doubtful of all – instead they went for the rent money.
Others aren’t to even try to prove them wrong because the science is “settled.” Not since the tulip craze has the public been so duped into such mass hysteria. If they ever realize the fools they were played for, all h**l will break loose.

  5. Yes. Who in Hades ever said that GRB theory was anywhere near settled anyway?
Noone, that’s who. Two types were known (which we sort of understood, maybe, a little).
    Now there is a third.
Even our nearest and dearest star, a.k.a. “Sol”, which we have been observing for a long
time, surprises now and then; and we are a long way from the ability of reliably predicting its
    fluctuation.

  6. Which, of course, is why the “climate scientists” (pox be upon them) attempt to say that
its variability has no effect on us.

  7. “…..forcing scientists to overhaul much of what they thought they knew about……”
And THAT is why so many of us are skeptical of anyone who is arrogant enough to declare “the science is settled”.
“…instead they went for the rent money.” Well said, so much for “integrity”.

  8. That fellow Dermer who is quoted by the Christian Science Monitor is not himself very impressive.
    “Our theories”? “Our models?” There might be two or three competing theories – I haven’t looked;
but he is all too casual about developing a good theory. If his sort had prevailed way back when,
we would have no theory of gravitation (neither Newtonian nor relativistic) nor electromagnetism.
Descarte’s theory of planetary vortices worked, sorta – “just needed to measure a few adjustable
parameters”, someone might have said at a conference – and, actually, epicycles worked really well
(after a few centuries of tinkering).

  9. He here is a clue as why people don’t understand real science stuff.
Tom Paris: “Captain, the source of the distress call is 50,000 kilometers ahead”
Captain Janeway: “Alright, Tom, let’s drop out of warp”

  10. I am just happy we have evolved to a point where we have scientists to test and explore our universe instead of leaving the explanations to seers, astrologers and priests.

  11. As far as the universe goes its all theory based on a theory.. Nailed down by our preconceived scientific political paradigm.. Right or wrong is irrelevant in the quest for knowledge that has no application..
Politics, power and greed and the ever present ulterior motive end up stepping in to fill the void..
The universe through our eyes is a pretty small place..

  12. ‘“Some of our theories are just going down the drain,” said Charles Dermer, an astrophysicist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico’ — a real scientist who changes his theories to conform with observation in contrast to the IPCC and its pseudo-scientists for whom no amount of observation contrary to their theories will cause them to alter those theories.

  13. Yet another one of “these” threads that I expected to quickly go downhill with attacks on science as a whole.
Quite pleasantly surprised. “don morris @ 4:52 PM” hits the nail square on the head.

  14. “Some of our theories are just going down the drain,” said Charles Dermer, an astrophysicist…
That’s what happens when you ignore the effects of AGW…

  15. this is how science has ALWAYS worked. Theories are ALWAYS being revised, or sometimes even scrapped entirely. Only the hucksters at the IPCC would come up with their “consensus” BS, knowing that the retarded journalists would pick the line up…..
