  1. One of the comments:
Atomic_Walrus • 2 hours ago “Studying Cold War history in high school, I was struck at the contrast between Kennedy and Eisenhower in terms of management. Eisenhower faced most of the same challenges as Kennedy – confrontations with the Soviets, civil rights tensions in the South. However, he never let the situations escalate to the crises faced by Kennedy. Eisenhower wasn’t glamorous or dramatic, but he was a superb leader and president. Kennedy often seemed to be in over his head.”
Exactly! Kennedy was a drama queen.

  2. Perhaps we shouldn’t be so harsh when there’s plenty of evidence of a hard wired genetic component running through the Kennedy clan, they just couldn’t help themselves.

  3. This aft, I’ve been watching the movie The Kennedys on the History Channel. English actor Tom Wilkinson does a good job with the role of Joe Kennedy Sr. Watching this mini-series makes me realize that the wonder would be if any of Joe Kennedy’s family turned out well.
I watched part of the mini-series the first time it was shown, and the news then was that in the U.S., the cable channel History announced that it would not show The Kennedys stating “this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand.”
    Don’t see why.

  4. So I read the articles. The NYPost is, I think, mistaken that Angie Dickenson never admitted to sharing body fluids with Kennedy. In fact, her comment is about the best line coming from the parade of beauties —
“It was the most memorable 20 seconds of my life”.
There is a distinction, one which Kennedy failed to make & which shows that ethics have inmproved a bit since then, between old troopers like Marlene Dietrich and young people who worked for him & who might well have been traumatized by the resemblance to the real Camelot.
Marlene was deeply shocked by the assassination & no more held his sexual behavour against him than the lady that Ronnie Reagan raped did against him.
I like Colby Kosh, but he appears to contradict himself in the second paragraph, unless one accepts thinks that playing a “dangerous 13-day game of blindfold chess” [with nuclear pawns] was impressive.
Kennedy WAS better than his military advisors. But he could have solved the problem without playing “Big Bad John” on the Whitehouse loudspeakers & driving home the American superiority in power which he had previously denied in getting elected.
It’s not news that Kennedy was a serial philanderer. But to somehow imply that this quality had any causitive role in his assassination is bizarre.
Especially given the clear distinction people are attempting to make between private & public in the case of our own dear Rob Ford.

  5. I’ve always suspected that younger brother Teddy acted like such an a**hole his whole adult life to deflect attention from JFK’s personal failings. It was an easy role to play since he was born an a**hole but he probably would have been a lot more circumspect without the assassination.

  6. Eisenhower came from a family that had none of the wealth of Kennedy’s and one that promoted ambitions rather different from those Joseph Kennedy Snr. exemplified for his offspring. “Ike” made a career in the army and had some time in when WWII broke out. He rose to Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, and nobody’s perfect, but he was good at that job. Kennedy was a junior officer in teh Navy and commanded a PT (Patrol Torpedo) boat, but not for very long before it was sunk in action. He performed admirably in that aftermath but it left him too near disabled for active service. After the war Kennedy went into party politics backed by his father’s money and influence. Eisenhower carried on in the Army until he retired, was president of Columbia University, and then ran for U.S. President.
If you had to prepare someone by upbringing and experience to be head of state and head of government, you’d give them Eisenhower’s life rather than Kennedy’s, wouldn’t you?
Compare Justin Trudeau and Stephen Harper. If you don’t like their party affiliations, imagine you could wave a magic wand to change that, and then, which one would you hire for a job as as large, complex, and contentious as running the government of your whole country.

  8. dizzmal…U do know that the only reason the “13 day stand off” even happened was because Kruschev had NO respect for kennedy as CIC (or as a politician), as Kruschev thought that Kennedy was incompetent, and that Kruschev backed off because of this incompetence. Kruschev was afraid that kennedy would f*ck up royally. And we are in about the same boat with the current idiot playing at POTUS, lord help us if a real crisis ever shows up!!!

  9. I always wondered why Jacob Leon Rubenstein shot the presidential assassination suspect. I don’t feel sexual misconduct had anything to do with it…

So tell that to Colby Cosh. He was the one that was impressed.

  11. You sure Reagan was a rapist? Based on one woman’s say so? Heck, I’m not even convinced that that psychopath Clinton is one.

  12. But you obviously believe that Clinton is a psychopath. Based on whose say so?
And the woman in question was qute forgiving — I mentioned that it wasn’t held against him, eh?
These are Hollywood types in which the ‘casting couch’ was a rite of passage.
    In her own words —
// “I opened the door. Then it was the battle of the couch. I was fighting him. I didn’t want him to make love to me. He’s a very big man, and he just had his way.
Date rape? No, God, no, that’s [Kelley’s] phrase. I didn’t have a chance to have a date with him.” Walters says she bears Reagan no ill will, and has even voted for him: “I don’t think he meant to harm me.” //

  13. ” you wonder why it took so long for somebody to shoot the swinish bastard.”
This is a disgusting thing to say. I am disappointed MacLean’s would allow such a comment.
