You are pulling the usual MSM selectivity. For every incident in public transit you could easily
find 10 or 100 incidents on the sidewalks.

Obviously fiction. Convicted felons cannot possess firearms; there’s a law to prevent that. Next they’ll be telling us that people bring guns into gun free zones.

Before reading the article I was wondering if the perp was black or Muslim because of the evident misogyny. Not that all blacks or all Muslims would do this kind of thing but that this kind of action seems to be more prevalent in those groups.

John, the big difference between mass transit and walking on the street is that of confinement. If you’re on a bus, subway or street car, and someone slips the bonds of sanity, you are trapped in there with them until the driver realizes there is a problem and stops the vehicle in a place that is safe for you to get out, which can be limited in a subway. Note that if you’re in the back of the bus and the madman is at the rear exit you have no way out without risking a violent confrontation.
On the sidewalk you can at least run away or into a store and hold the door against the attacker and the police can respond much quicker. With your own car, you decide who rides with you and more importantly who doesn’t.
Are you in a transit union, John? You seem pretty reasonable on a lot of issues, but on this one, you just don’t get it.
The real problem with public transit is that you don’t get to choose your fellow passengers, and all too often, some of them are the dregs of society.

And the big difference between this blog and reality is that every single day, millions of people ride transit and nothing bad, besides the occasional fart, happens to them.
This blog however seeks out the rare instances of something happening and attempts to spin it as a reason not to ride transit. That’s like saying you shouldn’t live in a house, because houses can burn down, or ride in a car, because that car might go off the road into a pond. Oh wait… that happened just the other day to Kate. I wonder how long before she goes on a crusade against the terror of cars.
Some commenters here remind me of an African Wildlife documentary. All these animals of various types peacefully munching grass on the open plain. All the while the Lions, leopards, Wild Dogs, Hyenas, et all are patiently watching for any sign of weakness.

For every incident on public transit there is 100 incidents that don’t get reported at all.
That aside I don’t ride public transit because quite frankly, I like to chose who is allowed in my personal space, I find it filthy, disease ridden, dehumanizing, waste of time, smells like an outhouse and affirms that this tenant of socialism is okay.

Come on, people. When are we going to see articles like “Eating in public restaurants is like inviting 20 strangers into your dining room?” or “Going to a movie is like inviting 20 strangers into your living room?”.
Er, yes, the chance that one will encounter a wacko in any public situation is higher than it will be in a confined and private space, such as your home or your car. However, as John points out, these public situations are relatively rare, and come to our attention precisely because they are against the norm. Moreover, selective memory helps people believe that these incidents are far more frequent than they actually are – for example, someone here posted that people commit suicide by jumping in front of TTC trains “every month”, when in fact, there have been 12 such suicides in the last 14 years.
I prefer to ride my bike to and from work rather than take the TTC because it’s 1) faster, and 2) cheaper, but when it’s pouring out, I take the TTC, and in my 50+ years of riding it, I’ve seen two criminal incidents. I’ve seen more car accidents happen – let alone the ones I pass – than I’ve seen crime on transit.
