  2. Did you actually read Dean’s essay? Because if this is your take away, I’m not sure you did, or at least you didn’t get his points.
    Incidentally, if you think there are not “death panels” right now at insurance companies, you’re delusional. People are refused insurance all of the time so they have to wait until they’re in collapse before they can go to an emergency ward and be treated “for free”. By that point, it’s too late. That’s a “death panel” in action, but instead of it being a panel, it’s a call centre employee in India or the Philippines. Palin remains a dumb@ss, as do anyone who thinks the twit is leader material.

  5. John, you should see how long it takes in Canada to get treated for CANCER. My friend in Edmonton had to go to the US for ovarian cancer treatments. She got surgery in a matter of days, rather than months, and then did her aftercare in Mexico. She had to pay out of her pocket but she is still alive. If she had waited the 18 months in Canada she would have gotten sicker and probably wouldn’t be alive today.
    Also, if our healthcare system is so great why do certain liberal politicians (Jean Chretien, Belinda Stronach) who push so hard for universal health care go to places like the Mayo Clinic in the US? I guess it would be for the same reason that certain government agencies south of the border are exempt from Obamacare.

    Excessive waits for health care services endured by Canadian patients have imposed huge costs on the nation’s citizens according to a study from the Centre for Spatial Economics.
    Other major findings:
    The study of medical wait times in all 10 of Canada’s provinces found excessive delays for four key procedures–total joint replacement surgery, cataract surgery, coronary artery bypass graft surgery, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans–cost the nation an estimated $14.8 billion in 2007.
    This in turn lowered federal and provincial government revenues by a total of $4.4 billion, the report noted.

  12. Big problem is, all the politicians (and our ovine media) get everyone fixated on this private vs. public health care BS instead of addressing the problem: funding priorities and eliminating the non-essentials.
    Private health care can’t work if the governments are taking so much money out of private pockets that folks can’t pay for it.
    And public systems can’t work if the governments are pissing money away on useless vote-getting initiatives.
    But nothing is going to change until it gets so bad that the Governor’s kid dies on a gurney in a hospital emergency ward.

  13. As a cancer survivor here in Canada I’m living proof that our social medicine program will do its best to kill you if given the chance. I’m only here today because of luck and a strong constitution. Now dependent on the system to keep feeding me drugs that will hold off the inevitable, instead of being free of cancer that would have been detected and dealt with in timely manner had I taken the initiative to go outside the reservation.
    Arguments that cite US medicare or private health insurance limitations as relevant to the failure of nationalized medicine are nothing but feeble attempts to divert discussions from the real issue.
    The ONLY people arguing for more government in the medicine business are people who want more government. Too stupid to know what they are asking for.

  14. I don’t need to go the the US as I have worked there been privately insured and used the system and the coverage was reasonable and the care outstanding. Americans HAD access to many treatments, surgeries and medicines Canadians do not. The US has a far higher cure/reover rate than we do – particularly where cancer is concerned. By comparison the Canadian system is an unsustainable system which rations care based on transfer payments and how much unions suck out of that operating budget – so please don’t presume to “school” me in something you obviously have limited knowledge of.

  15. If hospitals were paid fees for services instead of block funding and had to compete for work to build their empires, there would be no waiting lists. Everyone knows this and nobody does anything about it.
    Hospitals are given their money up front and patients are a terrible inconvenience, costing them lots of cash that could be used for big expense accounts, pensions, golden parachutes etc. If the money came with the patient they would have greeters at the front door.
    A few years ago Alberta increased the health budget 13 % to get rid of waiting lists and line-ups. It helped not one iota.

  18. I have an appointment with an Orthopaedic surgeon in Ottawa for Nov 4th, 2014. Yes, 2014. In 1999, I had to wait 8 months to have an orthopaedic surgeon look at my right shoulder after a workplace accident. The wait is now 17 months. This is just to see a surgeon, if an operation is necessary, now you have to wait for an operating room to become available. I figure I will be going under the knife in the summer of 2015.
    The Ontario government has put all the money into cardiac and cancer care so orthopaedics gets whatever is left at the bottom of the barrel. Don’t slip on ice and tear an ACL unless you want to spend a year or more hobbling around on a crutch.
    If you really want to see where socialised medicine leads look to the NHS in once-Great Britain, where elderly patients are not given fluids, so they die of dehydration within three days, thus freeing up hospital beds.

  20. My two year old nephew was denied a health card (and therefore ANY medical treatment) until some fluke event he was given one. A two year old. My sister-in-law has had medical appointments cancelled and pushed back on various occasions. I can point to various relatives and friends with other stories. When the government decides for you, you are screwed.

  23. The fact is, we’ve had a lot of technological innovations in medicine that have made possible things that were considered science fiction only a few decades ago. But those innovations aren’t cheap, and no system can escape the fact that lots of people want to take advantage of these innovations but most cannot afford them without risk sharing. Between the two main forms of risk sharing, and acknowledging that neither of them can ever be perfect, I’ll take the private insurance version. Actually, I would have taken that version, had not the Federal government of the USA deigned to make that decision for me and 300 million other people, in their scheme that is specifically designed to destroy private medicine over time.
    It must be the conceit of socialized medicine’s boosters in other countries that their system is universal and humane, and that people die in gutters in America. This of course is nonsensical. I went to an orthopedic surgeon some years back, a Canadian doctor, who very approvingly boasted that his hospital in the US had more MRI and CT capability than his entire province had back home.
    Those days are rapidly receding in the rear view mirror. Now we’re going to learn the old adage that if we thought it was expensive before, just wait until it’s free.

    When the insurance company death panel denies your claim, you can sue them. Or you can change companies, you can pay the doctor cash you got from selling your car or begged from charity, whatever. You have what we like to call “recourse”. This is called “private enterprise”.
    When the official government death panel denies your claim, there is no recourse. You can’t sue. You can’t switch. You can’t pay cash. So you just die. This is called “socialism”.

  29. Healthcare in Canada is the poster child for breach of contract by government.
    Promised free to all, taxes taken from all, services not available at this time for most.
    A good socialist system, the correct people get timely treatment, the rest get postponed or forgotten.
    18 months for an appointment for a diagnosis ?
    No clue as to illness, these tests are negative, make another appointment for 18 months from now.
    Result mother of 4 still sick, undiagnosed 5 years later.
    This is healthcare govt style.
    Note also that our politicians and “healthcare workers” have desperate healthcare plans, which far exceed the “service” they provide the payers of the bills.
