I’d pay little attention to this, if organic advocates weren’t so quick to defame the people who actually do feed the world;
A recall has just been announced for certified-organic berries sold at Costco. According to the Centers for Disease Control, at least 79 people in eight states have contracted hepatitis A, a debilitating disease that can last for weeks or months, and even be deadly, after eating Townsend Farms frozen berries bought at the box store retailer. The specific item in the crosshairs–Organic Antioxidant Blend Frozen Berry and Pomegranate Mix–was apparently purchased in April.
The CDC says Costco removed the item from its shelves and Townsend Farms voluntarily recalled the item. But what about those who certify organic food? What’s their response?
Just guess.

Hmm, if only this were meat and not “organic” berries. Then we’d have round-the-clock footage and hand wringing.
Let me see, I’m guessing the organic providers are self-reporting a la ObamaCare. LOL!!
China ships almost 100% of their organic produce to the USA. We all know that anything made in China is superior in quality, don’t we ? The facts and tributes behind organic farming are every bit as legitimate as the facts behind global warming and swallowed with the same enthusiasm by the “sky is falling” crowd. It also falls into the same “sucker” category.

“Organic” Is The Latin Word For “Grown In Pig Shit”
Or, human shit. Used just about everywhere. Whether ‘organic’, or not. Just goes to prove, buy locally, then you know how it was grown.
http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/human-waste-fertilizer-complaints-211899721.html
“I’m not aware of any incidents where it’s caused environmental problems,” said Tony Walker with the TCEQ. He fought off flies while explaining that farmers want the fertilizer and have a right to use it.
“That stuff is considered similar to commercial fertilizer,” he says.”They can apply it anywhere.”
A company called Renda Environmental recycles the bio solids on 80 to 100 thousand acres a year in North Texas.
It is dishonest to blame Hepa A contamination on organic produce.
The most likely root cause of infection is illegal alien pickers and packagers who do not wash their hands after going to the toilet. You invite Somalian refugees to the USA and give them jobs in food industry, then you complain of infections. Go figure you people.
Growers in the Niagara region have had to root out their pear and apple trees because of China.
I wouldn’t recommend the Chinese eat food from their country.
Bill B is correct.
Besides nobody is forcing anyone to buy organic. If you don’t like it don’t buy it, it’s called freedom of choice.
Once again……for the ignorant….ALL food is organic. How its grown is another matter.
The only difference between an organic farmer and a normal farmer is a ponytail.
I don’t know what all the fuss is about. After all, it’s obviously certified-organic Hepatitus A.
You didn’t read the entire article, did you, Bill? In this case, the contaminated berries originated in Turkey. I wonder if Turkish muslim farmers wipe their butt with their bare hands?
The whole point of the article is that “certified organic” is a fraud. There is no mechanism in place for food safety testing, nor for ensuring that “organic” practices are exclusively used.
Intuitively I know that organic grown produce is better if everything else is equal. Soil is healthier, more microbial action leads to better plants and more food value. I can see my own garden produce is better than anything I can buy.
Of course I don’t deny that scams will occur frequently and I would not buy Chinese organic. Read Michael Pollan’s books on food.
The same scams are used with conventionally grown food. Herbicides and pesticides not allowed in the US or Canada are used in unknown quantities, then the food is imported and deemed ‘safe’.
So far as that goes, some of the same regularly happens domestically. Herbicides and pesticides are used in applications in which they are not registered to be used, and in quantities they are not meant to be used. Common knowledge in the Ag community.
“You heard right. Certified organic crops are not tested. They’re not tested to ensure that prohibited substances like synthetic pesticides are avoided; nor to ensure that feces are kept out of the organic food chain.
The system is based on good-faith compliance (record-keeping and record-checking) and a hope that nothing untoward happens. And it’s this complete lack of scientific rigor which led to the current Townsend fiasco.”
Allah almighty! The organic food business relies on the “honour system” !!!
“Honour” is an outmoded concept,at least according to all “progressives” I’ve met,and organic zealots are among the most progressive.
So,”I’m an organic farmer, trust me”, is a bit absurd.
The system is based on good-faith compliance (record-keeping and record-checking) and a hope that nothing untoward happens.
The same is true of conventionally grown crops. Amounts, and proper usage, are only controlled by the person who applies the chemical. And there are just as many socialist types conventionally farming. Sask. is full of them.
Yeah well…those who believe conventional agriculture over applies, chemicals that are not effective…..should have a chat with the Captain.
It’s all about money…..like a framer doesn’t abuse/neglect his livestock, overuse etc of chemicals is also not profitable.
Yeah, there are probably a few that do but economic darwinism deals with them.
[In disbelief] No, I did not read the article at all. I was commenting on the post. But are you people reading the labels on your food at all? Buying food originating half world away is… what should I say to not insult you too much… infantile? You buy and eat food made in a 3d world country whose population’s ideology is at war with your ideology and then you blame organic industry? Oh, boy, some people…
Exactly. No one I know overuses chemicals.
organic crops are not tested. They’re not tested to ensure that prohibited substances like synthetic pesticides are avoided
Nonetheless, every study that samples organic vs non-organic food finds higher levels of pesticides in non-organic foods, and only trace amounts in organics. Your chances of avoiding harmful contaminants is greater with organic foods. Raw food should always be treated with caution whether organic or not.
Read labels, look for country of origin, don’t expect that foreign ‘organic’ is as good a Canadian or US organic.
north_of_60 All Vegetables are organic.
When I go to Sobeys or Safeway I always ask the clerk where the In-Organic carrots are. They look dumbfounded as they don’t know that there isn’t anything like an In-Organic carrot.
Paying 40 – 100 % more for the same produce is stupid economics and just proves the Organic Marketing Scheme is working. As P.T. Barnum once said, “There is a sucker born every minute.” People who pay the extra cost of Certified Organic are on the upper income level and don’t have to worry about paying a premium for their food.
I have purchased both and cooked them side by each and there was no difference in taste and from Certified laboratory testing there is no difference in Nutritional value.
If you are concerned about residues wash all vegitables before cooking weather they are Certified Organic or un Certified In-Organic.
Exactly. No one I know overuses chemicals.
How about using it for purposes for which it’s not registered?
I was mainly thinking of under use. Leading to resistant pests and weeds. Over use leads to the same thing. Over use in the sense of too much dependence on one herbicide or pesticide.
The point was, how it’s used is all on the honour system, same as the, so-called, organic industry.
