Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

What They Say About SDA
"Smalldeadanimals doesn't speak for the people of Saskatchewan" - Former Sask Premier Lorne Calvert
"I got so much traffic after your post my web host asked me to buy a larger traffic allowance." - Dr.Ross McKitrick
Holy hell, woman. When you send someone traffic, you send someone TRAFFIC.My hosting provider thought I was being DDoSed. - Sean McCormick
"The New York Times link to me yesterday [...] generated one-fifth of the traffic I normally get from a link from Small Dead Animals." - Kathy Shaidle
"You may be a nasty right winger, but you're not nasty all the time!" - Warren Kinsella
"Go back to collecting your welfare livelihood." - Michael E. Zilkowsky
You are right it constitutes living on a piece of land where the river has flown before and will flow again. Hence no insurance.
I had a conservation with a member of the ERCB (energy resources conservation board – a branch of government with the mandate to ensure that any area that gets mined or developed gets the most possible out of the ground, sterilizing the minimum possible of the remaining resource). I asked how long reclaimed rock spoil faces had to maintain their slopes without failing. The immediate answer was “forever”. I pointed out that we could expect the glaciers to come again in under 10,000 years, did the spoils have to be able to withstand the glaciers too? “Uh, no, just a 1 in 100 year, 5 day storm event is considered enough.”
As noted earlier, some of the flat building benches in Calgary are glacial in origin. There’s a reason that Acts of God are called so, they cannot reasonably be planned for.
Strad: I live in Eastern Ontario. Grew up in a small town on the St. Lawrence and a local river that would rush mightily in the Spring but was never a danger. Survived the ice storm of ’98 without having to ask for help. People rally around, which they’ll do out west.
You are like my deceased husband (may he rest in peace) when it comes to giving. He did his thing – not give because he figured the govt should look after it and he knew he’d paid his full share in taxes, and I did my thing – contribute to causes I thought were worthy.
Thing is with him, he didn’t have the same level of resentment as you seem to. I can see ulcers in your future as we’re going to see acts of God for many years to come.
This was no act of God. This is people building in places known to flood.

And damn right I resent being a slave for six months of the year so entitled people don’t have to bear the consequences of their choices.
“Boohoo, I didn’t know this could happen. I’m entitled to re-build, in the same place, with taxpayer funds’. Well, maybe if you bore the consequences of your choices you would look into it a little more deeply the next time. The information is available. Gawd, High River floods just about every year…
The Consequences of Having No Consequences, yeah right…

I can sympathize with your sentiments; only a retard would build a house on a floodplain or cliffside, lose their home, and then expect other people to pay for it.
On that note, I don’t really hear the bulk of Calgarian’s demanding other people pay for their lost homes.
Yet in all fairness isn’t it time that Quebec and other provinces pay back some of that Alberta equalization money, or at the very least STOP all Alberta equalization payments to other provinces?
With that allot more Albertan’s can do whatever they hell they want with the surpluses saved from handouts to other provinces, no?
On that note, I don’t really hear the bulk of Calgarian’s demanding other people pay for their lost homes.
Probably because they don’t need too. Redfraud already told them they would be compensated. Remember, Calgary voted for her. Now it’s time for their reward…
With that allot more Albertan’s can do whatever they hell they want with the surpluses saved from handouts to other provinces, no?
That process is best demonstrated at home first. Otherwise, it’s just more of ‘do as I say, not as I do’.

I’m just happy that they didn’t bust out all Katrina style. Missus Obamba Oprah told the world that rioting would happen to anyone in the same situation, and yet Calgarians did the impossible and refrained from raping, looting and killing each other.
We should be thankful.
13 cases of breaking an entry. probably the same as any other night.

no riots here.
did my volunteer shift and forwent my paid job.
no welfare here , cue the violins.
I’m just happy that they didn’t bust out all Katrina style.
No, this is more civilized, a raid on the public treasury. Using their very own bought and paid for premier.
no welfare here
What do you call this?
http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/alberta-to-provide-1b-in-funding-to-kickstart-flood-recovery-1.1338966
The Alberta government has announced it will provide $1 billion in funding to start the first phase of the province’s flood recovery…
‘Are we sticking to the plan to balance the budget?’ No, we’re not,” she said.
Displaced residents will be provided with pre-loaded debit cards to help them with their immediate housing needs and day-to-day purchases, she said. Those who qualify will receive $1,250 per adult and $500 per child.
So, where’s all the bravado about “We’re Calgarians, we help each other out,”?

At least what’s left of Albertan’s Heratige Fund is finally going to some Albertan’s for a change.

STOP all equalization payments from Alberta to other provinces!
At least what’s left of Albertan’s Heratige Fund is finally going to some Albertan’s for a change.
I suppose at least some of the bureaucrats are Albertan.
Gonna be some fat contractors when this is done. Always happens when there’s gov’t money involved. Maybe some of them will be Albertan.
A window gets broken, a window gets fixed. Wealth gets redistributed…the socialist dream.
Is Mother Nature a hooligan? (as described by Frederic Bastiat in his “Broken Window” fable)
