  1. Once again, the iron law of unintended consequences bites the progressives in the rear.
Store owners say plastic bag ban causes more shoplifting
Thieves with reusable bags harder to track, Seattle store owners say

Mike Duke, who operates the Lake City Grocery Outlet with his wife, said that since the plastic-bag ban started last July, he’s lost at least $5,000 in produce and between $3,000 and $4,000 in frozen food.
“We’ve never lost that much before,” said Duke, who found those numbers through inventories of stolen and damaged goods.

  2. Not to mention that the re-usable bags, unless frequently and carefully cleaned, become a home for all sorts of bacteria.
A couple of drips from that package of fresh meat could, eventually, start an epidemic.

  3. As many of you know, there are some dedicated people who rescue retired race horses and retrain them for other purposes. They do this for no other reason than that they love horses. Here’s a heartwarming story about a generous racehorse owner and one of these rescue operations.

“He called me and said how terrible he felt, and that he had a horse with colic the same day,” Keen said. “He had the resources to save his horse, and felt terrible that we didn’t.”
Papiese immediately wrote out a $10,000 check to the charity, and in her excitement, Keen told Papiese she would use the money to build a new barn to house her ex-racehorses.
“I started telling him how we had to keep some horses outside, and they’re cold in the winter and hot in the summer, and right before we got off the phone, he said, “I’m going to build you a barn.”
About 10 days ago, the trucks rolled in and work crews got busy, transforming her modest facility in Burleson, TX. into something she’d previously only dreamed of….a 20 stall, state of the art barn.

  4. I am not sure if this qualifies as a tip, but we watched Atlas Shrugged Part II last evening and at least we thought it was well done, a great production and quite clear as to the message. The only complaint my wife had was that I should quit exclaiming a number of times, “Hey, this is happening now” in various sentence configurations. In other words, Shut up and watch.
The end kind of leaves you hanging a bit.
It is a decently priced Blu-Ray at Amazon.

H/T Ottawa’s socialist Mayor: When push is shoved.
“The picture has since gone viral on the Internet, showing up on social media and blogs such as OttawaStart. It’s symbolic of the bus mayhem that was part of the heavy snowfall on Wednesday. ”

“Ottawa bus-push photo an Internet hit”
“OTTAWA — Tadja Roy Gaines was on her way to work Wednesday afternoon when she noticed a stuck bus.
That was hardly unusual. Some 200 OC Transpo buses suffered the same fate that day as between 25 and 30 centimetres of wet snow fell on the capital region.
But what really got Gaines’s attention was what happened next with the 118 Hurdman bus at Baseline and Greenbank roads.
“All of a sudden, I saw people getting off and moving to the back of the bus,” says the 22-year-old waitress and student. “Then they all started pushing it from behind to get it out of the snow.””

  8. I hope Fox posts the whole interview with Mitt Romney that is on right now. What a refreshing change from the campaigner in chief. Ah, if only the election had been a little different…

  9. I just finished watching a CBC show called “Being Black in Canada”.
They talked to a bunch of successful black Canadians, hosted by another successful black Canadian.
I must have missed the point of this exercise, because I don’t feel guilty about anything, actually I’m a bit envious. I’m going to have watch it again, maybe this time I’ll play R.Kelly songs in the background.

  10. There is a very good biography of Ayn Rand: Ayn Rand and the World She Made. Rand was brilliant, really. Those on the left do not agree with her thinking, but her logic was razor sharp and few could come out of an argument with her unscathed. I think her books are actually very involving (though I have not read one for years.) I remember being mesmerized at the time I read them. What is off-putting for some is her use of the novel form as a vehicle for her ideas. They are, but if you accept what it is she is trying to do, it gives context to her writing. She has important things to say. Cheap criticisms of Rand based on (I assume) a rejection of her ideas do not do justice to this profoundly focused driven, and very accomplished woman. I think that those who are quick to dismiss Rand (Phil, this might be you!) have either not read her or are intimidated by logic of her message. Her biography is very revealing.

  11. Ayn Rand’s philosophy is based on reality. That’s why it’s true.
The leftist viewpoint derives from the Kant-Hegel cult. It’s based on fantasy and fairytales. It’s false and evil.
