Tonight, Tom Waits and Keith Richards team up for a sublimely beautiful take on the traditional folk song Shenandoah.
Better than all those easy-listening/choral versions put together.

  1. An Apple app:

Girlfriend Trainer, which is available in both the App Store and the Android market, lets players slap, electrocute, or mace a virtual girlfriend for what most people would call minor transgressions, including drinking their boyfriend’s drink or leaving her blouse on the floor. “Crack that whip and teach your gal a thing or two about being the Perfect Girlfriend!” reads the game’s description. “When scolding doesn’t work, just zap her, whack her, and train her to be your ideal girlfriend.…
“About time she got the message. Slap her silly!”

Whoops, I got the genders reversed.

  2. I sure hope you folks saw Ezra today. Man, he is gutting Suzuki, as well as his media sycophants. I lived a few door down from one of his homes on west 10th in Vancouver. His daughter lived there full time while he came and went at high speed in his Volvo. He actually ran over a cat in the lane while I was standing there and didn’t even slow down. All he did was hold his arm out the window with a “oh well” kind of gesture as he sped off. I have had a dislike for him ever since.

  3. That is quite possibly one of the worst pieces of music I’ve ever heard.
If I hear that after I die I know I’m on my way to hell.

Thanks Matt for the laugh tonight.

  5. Dammit! You made me look, and as far as I can tell Tom Waits has never recorded 16 Tons. Johnny Cash did of course but the moustache ruins everything.

  6. Hmmm… This could be interesting, or not:

As a matter of interest, I’d be curious to see several pieces of progressive comparative analysis (graphically presented, on the same timelines as the graphs in the post):
    1. Inclusion of provincial government debt in the total (including debt owed by provincially-owned utility outfits, as well as municipalities).
    2. Inclusion of off-balance-sheet contingent liabilities (like CMHC).
    3. Application of the GDP deflator to the data.
    4. Canada-USA nation-to-nation comparison on the same basis.
So, as I understand it, about 45% of Canada’s federal government debt is coming due this year — which could put the federal government back into surplus in a big way, given that a significant proportion of that debt might be able to be rolled-over at much lower interest rates (I’m thinkin’ 30-, 20-, and 10-year Canadas are coming due; the same could also be true for the provinces, their utilities and their municipalities).
And, if the Dominion goes back into surplus, that would mean that Mr. Harper’s 2011 election-campaign promise for income-splitting for all married couples would go into effect (I thought it a bit of an odd thingee at the time, but I understood the value of the idea, as I do my parents’ income tax — seniors’ pension income-splitting saves thousands per year).
All of which would mean, if true, that the man is, in fact, a strategical genius — I might even go so far as to say that the f*cker knew.
Which might also explain why he’s on Twitter (with 296,000 followers — unexpectedly, more than double Justin’s number):

  7. There is a lot better version of Shenandoah but this stupid Captcha won’t let me put the link in. Google Sissel and Shenandoah.

  8. Thanks for that very different version of ‘Shenandoah’, EBD. Jimmy Stewart starred in a movie by that name, and the song was played in the movie. I have loved the song ever since, and I was about nine when I saw Shenandoah for the first time. I watch it at least twice a year.
The movie is typical of any movie featuring James Stewart; a masterpiece. A movie in which a person cares very much about the fate of the characters, a movie where the audience cheers out loud – and sheds real tears for the terrible heart ache of a Dad who has to bury a young wife or a child. Jimmy Stewart explains statism in this brief clip:

  9. Aside from the fact that I can harmonize far better than Keef (what were you thinking, Keith: ‘lost your earphones?), this rough and ready version of this beautiful ballad is great: I like it! I love Tom Waits, a total original with a wicked sense of humour and a voice to match …

The fact that temperatures have trended down for the last two centuries debunks theories that anthropogenic (man-made) global-warming is caused by a rising CO2 gas levels associated with industrial burning of “fossil fuels.””

Mahamoud Bechir said he attended a meeting with Mr. Chrétien and the country’s long-serving president, Idriss Déby, and its then-Minister of Petroleum and Energy in September 2009. During the meeting, held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C., the former prime minister promoted the fledgling company, which was struggling to secure oil concessions in the African country.”

  14. Sublimely beautiful? It sounds more like vomiting than singing. And it’s so PUT ON and inauthentic, I’m at a loss why people fall for such an obvious fraud.
Tom Waits sued someone for using a Louis Armstrong singing voice in an iced tea commercial. Deluded much?
Imagine at home with his child. Hey Daddy, sing “happy birthday” for Junior on his second birthday.
    What would it sound like?
Barf Barf Barf Barf Barf Barf…
Barf Barf Barf Barf Barf Barf…
Barf Barf Barf Barf dear Junior…
Barf Barf Barf Barf Barf Baaaaaarrrrrffffff.
Seriously. Listen again. Are you people stoned or something?

  15. I hear you, Joe. I too become really outraged when people have different tastes in music than me. Because they’re just wrong.

  16. David Southham, I fully agree, Harper is a brilliant long term planner and incrementalist. Note how Chief Spend-a-lot and the Alway Idle native protest just faded away once the Deloitte audit was released and Canadians could see the fraud and corruption of the Attawapiskat and the majority of other native bands. When an article on the CBC website has literally thousands of posters agreeing with the exposure of this fraud plus Harper arranging meetings that Spence refused to attend unless her ever changing wishes were met the jog was up.
Harper is 10 steps ahead of the NDP and the Liberals and IMHO the best PM I have seen in my life of many decades.

  17. EBD: It’s not “An Apple App”.
    Because Apple didn’t write it.
    And it’s also for Android.
(Why not say “A Google App”, if we’re going to be all wrong about authorship?
It’s not so much that I care about Defending Apple’s Reputation, as much as I want the actual responsible party blamed. Just like I want people to blame Congress for stupid laws, before the President.)

  18. Well, you’re right, Sigivald. I meant “an Apple App” in the limited sense of “an App for Apple” (which it is). It wasn’t my intention to suggest that Apple developed/wrote it; as the article made clear, the boyfriend-slapping App was developed by a Mumbai-based company, and is one of the Apps sold in Apple’s App store for Apple users.
“An App for Apple” and “an Apple App” aren’t synonymous, I guess, but that’s the way I meant it.

  19. But,batb,Joel Grey looks great for a 70 something year old. He was the most interesting character in the film, imo.

  20. Joel Gray doesn’t look as good as my 85-year-old mom, but what the heck! Marisa Berenson looks pretty good, but she’s got those tell-tale little cherry cheeks, which are sure giveaways of having gone under the plastic surgeon’s knife. Minnelli’s just been butchered.

  21. No, Black Mamba, but TEF sang Shenandoah, and he got 1,933 thumbs up, and only 27, down, according to YouTube. And he dopes a damn fine job too.
