  3. I remember this well and read one of the books about the raid. As weasel word diplomacy was the the response of the day with our Lord Trudeau in charge, fat chance of a group of Canadians being rescued in a similar way at that time.

  4. I read a book on this episode,and the one thing I like about Israeli military authors is they don’t have a “superman” complex,at all.
    Another great story was “The House on Garibaldi Street”,written by the team leader in the same style as the Entebbe story,no pretense of being heroes or particularly brilliant, just determined soldiers doing the job they were trained to do.
    When they’ve done the job,to us they ARE heroes.

Being insightful and clever and such(ahem), I knew that Forest Whitaker was pretty much the best actor in Hollywood when I watched his very brief turn in the otherwise totally overrated and now rightly forgotten Crying Game. Eventually he got his Oscar for The Last King of Scotland. He plays Idi Amin. You should all watch it.

    The Last King of Scotland ends with the central character’s personal angle on the Entebbe Raid. The great thing about how stupid and tone-deaf everyone in Hollywood is is that they’re so stupid and tone-deaf that sometimes very politically incorrect stuff gets in under the radar. This movie is a good example. All you need is one agonized climactic line delivered by a Dignified Black Voice of Wisdom (Morgan Freeman’s evil twin, I think) about how the protagonist is only going to get out alive because he’s white, and how guilty he should presumably feel about that, and you can make a movie about the re-primitivisation*** of Africa, its reversion to tribalism under the paper-thin cloak of democracy, the political monstrosity of Islam (Amin was nominally Muslim, which is why he helped the Palestinian terrorists and eventualy died in Saudi Arabia), the heroism of Israel and the re-emergence of indescribable barbarism in the wake of Empire (after all Amin was infamously not only a vicious dictator but also a ritual cannibal).

    From Wikipedia, which I know cannot be trusted, but we’ll take our chances:
    ‘UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim described the raid as “a serious violation of the national sovereignty of a United Nations member state,” (meaning Uganda). Dozens of Ugandan soldiers were killed in the raid. The Arab and Communist world condemned the operation, calling it an act of aggression.’

  19. Thanks for reminding me about that raid Kate. It was a daring and successful mission. Didn’t realize how close to the aircraft limits they were operating until I read the interview. Hopefully, for Israels sake, the same level of professionalism and unconventionality is present in the IDF.

    Guaranteed. When you are fighting the palis,hamas,al queda,etc, every day,you do not let your guard down for a second.And the IDF has tricks that make our JTF or the Yanks deltas look like Boy Scouts.Something about fighting for your very survival,I guess.

    According to Victor Ostrovsky, ex-Mossad, they even planned to assassinate Pres. George H. Bush after he cut off their loans. Some Palestinian extremists the Mossad had on ice were to be used as fall guys.

  24. Here’s to the “Trash Haulers” and the crews who fly them. They aren’t comfy to fly in nor is the cabin service great but if you really have to get in or get out of some hellish remote place the C-130 Herc is the way to go.

  25. One of the all time great military actions.
    The muslims vastly outnumber the Jews, but the Jews vastly outsmart the muslims. The best tank is the Merkava Mk4, the best medium range air to air missile is the Python 5, the best mission avionics are built in Israel, the best UAVs are made in Israel. When Iran and it’s proxies attack Israel I think they are in for a shock.
