And, as the so-called ‘warriors’ at Caledonia, Oka and Gustafson Lake have shown us, a handfull of thugs committed to open violence of the political sort can paralyze our politicians and turn our state security systems into bystanders.
But the minority percentile should not alone bear the blame for the perpetuationuation and expansion of our welfare states and the radical alteration of our social mores and culture.
In Canada (and I suspect the US is not much different)one out of five people are employed direcly by government, and at any one time one out of the remaining four private sector workers is likely to be working on a government-funded contract of some sort. And when you factor in the chronic UI abusers, welfare and disability recipients and pensioners, it’s not hard to see that we have a frightfully high chunk of our electorate that is beholding to Big Government for its daily bread.

As for ‘free markets in labour’, that is a myth. You are assuming that the reason for immigrants in low skilled jobs is because they are doing the work ‘others refuse to do’. Really? Or could it be that so many immigrants in this ‘open border policy’ lack any skills, lack any ability to speak the common language and thus, are reduced to employment only in work that requires no skills and no communication?
And, you are assuming that all incoming immigrants will not merely be able to find work, but also, will contribute, in taxes, enough to fund their use of the social services offered by the state. These include health care, schools, police and fire, common transportation, etc. Data shows that this is not the case.
All you have to do is google, as Kathy suggested, immigrants and welfare use, and you’ll find extensive data on the high use of welfare by immigrants.
Canada’s move to a focus on skilled and linguistically functional immigrants is an acknowledgment that the existing Canadian population cannot afford to support an incoming population who are unable to contribute to the costs of their use of basic government services.
This is directly attributable to the increased provision of government services from that of 100 years ago and the increased skills requirements for work in the modern economy.

It means a ‘plan, or a proposed course of action’. Therefore, the criteria for allowing immigration is a plan that allows immigration; it is a policy. An order to the Immigration Department that there need be no work skills or educational skills, is a legal plan allowing immigration.

Now, tell us, LAS, how can a government, which gets its money only via taxes, how can it support a population which does not contribute in taxes? Think. Don’t just insult me. Think.
As for the social, not merely economic wellbeing of a nation, a basic requirement is that its population be able to collaborate, interact, and work together. Multiculturalism, which has isolated immigrants into Identity Blocs, and has encouraged them to reject integration and collaboration, but to instead, bring their ancient cultural antagonisms with them, is a disastrous policy.
An immigrant nation, such as Canada, the US, Australia, etc, cannot develop as a productive society if its population are focused on insular ancient identities and refuse to work together. The Australian Values Document is correct; if you want to come to Australia, you must reject adversarial isolation and accept Australian values. Canada is, under Harper, changing its immigrant focus, and doing the same, insisting that immigrants accept Canadian values. Why else bother to come here?

The word immigrant needs to be clarified. There are skilled immigrants, dependants and refugees. Here’s the breakup of Canadian immigrants:
60% skilled immigrants
26% family class
14% refugees
When some refugees go on the dole, sit at home and download Bollywood movies all day long, xenophobes lump all immigrants into the same category and bash everyone. There are plenty of hardworking immigrants in Canada but the bigots will only see the negative side.

Rizwan – when, in the time period when an immigrant comes to Canada, and ‘goes on the dole’, do you decide to deport them? What happens if they come to a good job, and the company goes bankrupt? I think these are useless criteria.
The reality is, first, the ratio of skilled immigrants to unskilled; and second, the state of the economy.
If you allow unskilled immigrants in, then the economy must decide whether it can support them. Does it have enough unskilled jobs for them to work at? A follow-up question would be, can the economy function with a large ratio of unskilled labour?
The reason for that is: taxes. And entitlements. If your economy provides many entitlements: health care, old age supplements, schools and low tuition, day care, transportation services and so on, then, it’s taxes that pay for this.
And, Iif your population’s work is heavily focused around low income jobs, then, the government’s tax income won’t support all these government services. So, what’s the state of the economy?
As for refugees, this has to be kept, I’d suggest lower than the 14%, because they are provided with a large amount of government services. Right away. Can the taxes taken in by the government support this output?

Culture matters. If immigrants- either illegal or Islamist- come into the country with no intentions of adapting, working or simply just not being nuisances, you’re going to have problems. What do troublemakers contribute aside from problems? If the white ‘shamists’ won’t admit that Islamism is a problem or rejoice at the “browning” of America (how vulgar an expression), they’ll be in for a bigger shock when it finally dawns on them how the culture that allowed them to spout out their claptrap doesn’t exist anymore.
