    Meh, a couple hundred million-million here, a couple hundred million-million there…

    Kotlikoff estimates the true fiscal gap is $211 trillion when unfunded entitlements like Social Security and Medicare are included.

  6. Brief story:
    I went to the opening of a new church Friday, 2,400-2,500 attended. Magnificent building (vaulted ceilings etc.), except the A/C units. The building has 4. These were speial green units. Needless to say two of them failed right away. It gets better. The units are fitted with CO2 sensors, you know, that deadly gas that is well known for killing church goers throughout the ages. Well at a certain level, the units start pulling outside air. It was 94 F. Entropy quickly ensued.

  12. In the story ∞ ≠ ø shared, if the AC unit controls had been correctly commissioned, calibrated and balanced that wouldn’t happen. It was a controls malfunction, nothing to do with their being ‘green’, and everything to do with someone not doing their job correctly.

    The purpose of the Chick-Fil-A action was to help create a public environment in which corporate executives dare espouse only the current truth as defined by the left.
    Islam will cease getting a pass when Muslims start owning corporations.

    Wasn’t it Stalin who said that one death is a tragedy, but a million deaths is a statistic? Regardless, this is disgusting news, and really starts to show the United States in a contemptible light.
    Comparing this situation to the one in Canada in the mid-1990s (and we’re no saints — we still have our own culprits, including the provincial governments in central Canada, who are behaving in a similarly reckless fashion) leads one to an initial conclusion that America faces two obstacles to dealing with this problem that Canada did not have to face at the time. Accordingly, the problem is much more intractable for them than it was for us.
    The first is an attitudinal one — putting it generously, there is no national consensus that this issue has to be dealt with. To be less generous, there is a significant element of the American public that doesn’t seem to get that there is a very big spending problem.
    The second is a structural one — the built-in conflict among the three branches of the U.S. government. Ironically, that conflict was originally intended to limit the power and size of government to interfere with and control the lives of Americans. The grim reality today is that the purpose of that conflict has been perverted — it is now a major impediment to reducing the role of the federal government.
    Before any decisions can be made on what entitlements, military programs, etc. are going to be cut, Americans are going to have figure out how they’re going to deal with these obstacles — not a very hopeful situation in the current context.

    Maybe I have too much faith in the American People, but I still believe that most Americans are reasonable enough to understand that their is no such thing as a free lunch. Evidence is there in that all the class warfare rhetoric has not turned Americans against Capitalism, Socialism is still a dirty word in American politics and all of the huge national political wins of the last thirty years have occurred in the context of a message of reducing the role of government.
    The real structural impediments are the powers of incumbency and of the administrative state that make any really major change in political direction possible only over the course of several elections.

    I think the GOP should be very careful; to my view, Obama can win re-election. He is essentially setting up a ‘continuity campaign’: ‘stick with me, we can lick this problem created by Bush, bit by slow bit, but it is slow and yet, we can do it’.
    And, he’s catering to his base and to the disenchanted by his class warfare saying that ‘it’s all due to the rich hoarding their money’…and defining Romney as one of this greedy group.
    Meanwhile, Romney’s focus on govt and its failures isn’t enough; he’s got to offer specific plans. I recall Harper’s first win, which he accomplished by offering five specific points, each basic and clear…..Romney has to offer a clear plan. Or, he’ll lose to Obama’s ‘continuity campaign’.

  39. peterj – there is another option; a staunch Conservative (in the true meaning of the word), a follower of the American Constitution (individual, not collective, rights): Dr. Ron Paul!
    Freedom loving people around the world are backing Ron Paul (Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Canada….Why not Mitt Romney? Because Mitt is like one of those cut out dolls from the fifties flat and frail, without substance or intelligence. Almost everyone likes Ron Paul because he is real, he is on the side of the Constitution and of taxpayers; and of individual rights ( clinging to guns, gold, land and religion are natural God Given Rights – ORomny (health) care is not).
    BTW – Mitt has said that is going to replace not repeal Obamacare. Robama/Oromoney care; same thing and as Sorass said re: Barry/Mitty: ‘no difference’!
    Patriots will be voting for Ron Paul. I will be hoping and praying for Ron Paul. Ron Paul has ideas and principles that I admire. He is not pro life one day and pro choice the next – Dr. Paul delivered babies and rejoiced in life, Dr. Paul is not pro small business one day and the exporter of small business to China the next, Dr. Paul wants the Fed gument out of the environment/education/property/bedrooms/backyards/airports and he wants to bring the soldiers home to defend America, not die in far away countries for the sake of enriching the big pigs in the military complex. What is not to like about Dr. Paul?
