They’ll just take the ammo.
The changes require — for the first time in Canada — gun owners to lock away all ammunition. At present, guns must be locked, but not ammunition. The proposed rules will require all gun owners to install a locking box or safe in their homes.
Toronto lawyer Ed Burlew, one of Canada’s leading experts in firearms law, described the proposed regulatory changes as “monstrous.” He said police already routinely charge lawful firearms owners with unsafe storage — a criminal charge — and that with the changes, more otherwise lawful citizens will be criminalized.
“It is not unintended consequences,” Burlew said. “This is a move to increase the ability of police to prosecute firearms owners for regulatory infractions.”
The draft regulations, made public recently, are currently in a 75-day review period. The public has been invited to tell Natural Resources Canada if they have concerns — before the end of June — and the final regulations will come into force in the late summer or early fall.

Update: Brian Lilley comments.

The Grey Lady >
I’m a little confused as to how my last comment, was defending the PC party on this issue?
My comment was quite the opposite of {sucking it up}, and I clearly stated earlier in the thread that “it is a work in progress to get a fully conservative party governing Canada”.
In the meantime, who are the contenders to the “right”?
My rant to MP Hoback may not have been all that politically correct. What do you think?

As a so called free citizen in a so called democratic country I decry this despicable attempt to further harass law abiding hunters and gun owners. Why is it that we are the ones being constantly scrutinized and persecuted by gun control advocates and govt agencies for something that is a lawful activity? Perhaps if the legal system spent a fraction of the effort at doing its real job in enforcing the will of the MAJORITY of Canadians and investigating REAL crimes, we would have less crime and less harassment of law abiding citizens. Do criminals have to go through the scrutiny that I had to go through to acquire a firearm? Not a chance, they just don’t care due to the fact that they are criminals in the first place and would not be able to pass the intense screening the law abiding citizen is subjected to already. No, instead, we the law abiding VOTING citizens must be helpless sheep praying the police will arrive in time to save us from the armed criminal . Even those who jump through the almost endless hoops and spend all the money to be in compliance only end up with a firearm so difficult to legally use as to be next to useless when actually needed. Perhaps if the legal system feels we must rely on the govt for our safety it should become legally responsible for the failure to do so regardless of how impossible it may be to provide 100% around the clock security to each citizen. I demand the right to protect myself, my loved ones, and my damned hard earned property with as much force as is reasonably required. Up to and including firearms since I’m not a hugely muscled hulk with a black belt able to fend off multiple attackers like Chuck Norris. I voted C because I was led to believe your party supported our ideals about personal rights, I now feel betrayed and am more than a little pissed about it. Perhaps this province needs its own Wild Rose party. Do your job on OUR behalf or you WILL be held accountable by the voters of this province.
LAS !!:30
No, what you mean is when they gain another majority.
Monte,
Sarcasm alert. Do you really think that LAS is that dense?
LAS, if the CPC ever wants to win another majority government they should learn very quickly to not mess around with gun owners.
Whoever said:
The price of freedom is eternal vigilance
knew exactly what they were talking about.
Everytime I think a bit of sanity is breaking through, some bureaucrat discovers it and beats it down again. The Conservatives allow this mindless stupidy to continue instead of cleaning house. I hope they understand that allowing this crap undermines the faith of the people that put them into power. The next election is not that far away and we have long memories.
Exactly. They just got elected. First thing you do is get rid of the liberal bureaucrats and replace them with conservatives (or better yet, don’t re-fill the job). They better do it quick.
Agree with the Lilly video 100%. The PCP better not mess with their voting base any further.
Just because many non-gun owners cannot seem to rationalize why it’s important that we draw a line in the sand when it comes to firearms regulation, owners know full well why.
The bottom line is that in Canada, the powers-that-be believe that armed defense is immoral and will stop at nothing to protect that position. This even extends to police dying because they are afraid to shoot.
My letter to PM and MP:
Dear Sir(s),
Media coverage has made me aware of an attempt to bring in regulations requiring locked storage of ammunition. This appears to be an undermining of the intent of ridding the populace of the Long Gun Registry by bureaucrats who disagreed with the government. I was disappointed to hear the minister responsible provide a very weak excuse for imposing this draconian set of regulations; they do not “bring us into the 21st century”, they take us back to the days prior to the Magna Carta.
I am not a gun owner but I have had much experience with firearms during a long military career. Cartridges without a gun are as useful as nails without a hammer and not much more dangerous. If heated, as in a fire, the may cook off and split, but not necessarily in a hazardous fashion. If confined in a closed metal box and heated in a house fire they would produce a lethal bomb. The concept of locking cartridges in a metal box is foolhardy and the product of some zealot who has no idea of the risks it imposes.
We do not need a means of criminalizing honest Canadians as a substitute for the Long Gun Registry. Replacing one onerous bureaucracy with another is not an improvement. Please do the honourable thing and leave well enough alone.
Sincerely,
Minister of Public Safety, the Hon. Vic Toews announced the tightening up of gun laws. Each new applicant for a firearms licence will be personally interviewed by an RCMP officer or some agent of the state.
Now they have access to C.I.P.C, the police database, so they already know the applicant if the applicant is a violent criminal. They treat ordinary citizens who apply like criminals because that is the premise of the C-68(1995) The Firearms Act, which Stephen Harper is a strong supporter of (minus the 2%, that is the long gun registry).
Why enact extra criminal sanctions on the storage of ammunition?
Two reasons:
1. Clearly, the government is very upset Ian Thompson was able to scare of the attackers who firebombed his house. The Crown’s case against Mr. Thompson has centered around whether he had legal access to ammunition or how it was stored. They view it as suspicious that he was able to access both a double locked handgun and ammunition and scare away his attackers, before the house burned down around him.
2. As the article pointed out smokeless gun powder is not an explosive unless it is placed in a metal box and heated up. Wait until that happens and the jihadi claims he was only following the “safe storage” law. Then while the ever shrinking number of licenced gun owners will be allowed to keep their firearms at home, they will have to turn over all their ammunition to the government for safe keeping until hunting season. Then they’ll let you have one cartridge, after you pay the storage fees.
Harper, unilaterally, changed the CPC policy to repeal C-68 the Firearms Act, to simply repealing the long gun registry. Most people didn’t notice.
He’s very good at looking after business and the budget, but as for looking after our Rights and Freedoms, not so much.
The Mulroney/Campbell/Chretien/Rock/Harper/Toews gun control plan is leaning towards the Mexican model. After all it’s worked so well down there.
This reminds me of the murder case in Saskatchewan about 4 years ago, 2 RCMP officers on hi-way patrol were chased back to thier Local Headquarters (they didn’t have any bullets for thier Guns) They got the bullets but were shot because they didn’t know how to load the Guns… TRUE STORY….
I would say that PMH has to learn how to fire bad people; he can’t be a maternal protector to a federal civil service that undermines his Government. Weakness is never respected by anyone…
This is just more of the same insanity like the “to save the children, we wanna read your emails” legislation. So conservative, I think I’m hearing fascist marching songs.
I tried to watch Byline on Calgary SHAW Cable tonight, but SHAW had it all pixelated into gibberish. Had to go right to SUN online to get the real deal on this.
Joe Oliver was so pathetic I had to wash the bile from my mouth.
By the way, where are cgh and ET when you need the Big Lecture on how critical conservative voters “just don’t get it”? Day off? Au contraire, I do get it. Two-faced, forked tongued sellouts. With Bob and Tom stumping for the PM to “resign” LOL because they didn’t sign a contract for some jets they liked, re-visiting “Gotcha of the Week”, the con’s slip is showing on how their “employees” are running rings around them.
C’mon, the civil service ain’t working for you, so wake up and smell the coffee. You’ve had enough time in the saddle to figure one that out. They aren’t on your side and never will be. Deal with it. You’re looking like idiots.
Chretien must be laughing at these guy’s ineptness. So I’m laughing right along, that make’s me a Liberal I guess.
The ‘snivel serpents’ attempt a counter attack…
Delightful interview with Ed Burley noting the provincial hacks trying to preserve federal data on firearms which are a criminal matter; and thus the exclusive prerogative of the federal government. Good luck to the provincial gun registry weinies…
I wonder how the bureaucrats would feel to be sent the next remittance in lead at high speed…yes, we’re going to start storing black powder in locked confined containers so that the next time there is a house fire we can kill fire rescue personnel with a nice explosion.
It reminds me of a fellow on a job site once smoking a cigarette while handling a five gallon gas canister…another master stroke of genius.
These bureaucrats are too stupid to design any safety regulations; still less make a pot of coffee, which they obviously haven’t been drinking enough of…
The ‘snivel serpents’ should go and clean out bedpans at the hospital for making such assinine recommendations.
If you want ammunition safety these twits would be the very last to consult.

I can just imagine the impact that a letter to my MP (Megan Leslie) would have. Maybe if I could find a way to show how the new regulations discriminate against performance artists …

I’m honoured to have so many SDA regulars in the same predicament/constintuency as me (I think). Leslie is one of the more crazier dippers.

Well said!
From CanadianGunNutz.com:
Vic Toews just announced it!
When asked by a reporter when the data would be destroyed, given that there is a court hearing in Québec to halt destruction, the Minister said that the law required immediate destruction and that unless there was a legal impediment to that [translation a court order, not a request or a hearing], that destruction would begin ASAP.
Also discussed were the ammo storage regulations. He said he wasn’t aware of them until a day or two. He said those regulations would not proceed as proposed!
“My MP is Megan Leslie. Think it’ll do any good?”
Now there’s the biggest nut hanging from the fruit tree.
Honestly if I lived in a community that elected a fruit bat like Leslie, I’d move. If the country offered nowhere else to move too – I’d join the revolution and be a part of the “Canadian Spring”.
Letter sent, and posted to 4 other blogs. Also reminded a few hundred hunters via email.

You bet, the long gun registry is dead as of midnight tonight.
The leftoshpere is squealing like stuck pigs, and Quebec has a 5 day injunction to stop the destruction of personal data. Vic Toews has indicated that they will comply with law, but in fact Quebec can only move against data of thier provincial residents at best – an unreported fact by the MSM.
Regardless it’s a done deal for freedom loving Canada, and business as usual for the Socialist welfare gulag of Quebec.

****Now let’s write our MLA’s and Mr. Toews to first thank Vic Toews for scraping the Long Gun Registry AND not allowing the proposed new ammo laws to proceed.
interesting theory on why the US gov’t is buying over 750 million rounds of .40 and huge amounts of other calibres for non-military dept’s like the USDA….it might sound a little paranoid but given ‘bama and holdem’s statements over the years, it’s not so far-fetched….

Subject: Government buying out all the 5.56 Military surplus ammo and is telling ammo dealers to stop selling to their vendors and civilians.
I have been calling allot of ammo distributors and ALL of them are telling me that our government is [buying out] all the 5.56-.223 cal military surplus ammo. And they’re also telling the ammo distributors stop selling the ammo to civilians and their vendors because the government is buying it all up from everyone they can. I have also spoken with theses ammo dealers and they told me that the 5.56 and .223 ammo is going way up in price.
For instance…I paid $149.00 for federal surplus 440 rounds of steel core and now at the gun show today it was selling for $440.00 for 420 rounds. I have checked and ALLOT of places online are out of the Military surplus ammo by federal [including] M193 and M855 SS109 ammo. I did find one place still carrying both these ammo’s and good prices still, but they’re the only place I could find. If interested let me know and Ill forward the info.
I was also told by the same ammo dealers that the government is going to buy all the 9mm and .45 ammo up, so hurry and buy while you can at the lower prices while still available. Guess if they won’t take our guns because they figure that there are some many out there, they will just buy all most popular military calibers. Can’t shoot a gun with no ammo…stock up now while you still can.
