Nat Gas certainly is viable. There’s lots of cost effective conversion kits out there, dual fuel kits too.
Personally, I prefer the idea of a personal flying vehicle like the Terrafugia Transition. Sure it might only get 18 miles per US Gallon while flying, but it shaves 25% off of my trip to Saskatoon, and gets me there in half the time. What’s not to like?
Kate, ask them why the numbers for EV vehicles are all cooked.
And ask them why electricity rates won’t go through the roof if everyone were to start driving EVs, considering that rates are already going through the roof with no EVs on the road.
Nothing has the energy density of diesel, gasoline, and most importantly jet fuel.
Battery operated transportation is just a dead end fad. 100+ years of development and refinement had seen the ICE power everything from ships to planes to trains. Battery powered electric vehicles? Up until a few years ago when this fad took off you might have seen them on a golf course, as a kid’s toy or a novelty / experimental car.
If tomorrow we woke up in a world without crude oil we would synthesize equivalent combustible liquids from coal gasification, distillation, etc to power jets, and trains and so forth.
Gas- STILL cheaper than a liter of milk (for a mental exercise compare the overhead of drilling rigs and oil derricks and pipelines and supertankers and refineries, and land leases and drilling rights and environ. studies AND EXCISE TAX to an untaxed, price controlled product like milk…)

“good question Engineering, I actually spoke with an electrical grid specialist at the University of Calgary on that subject and he said if every household in Canada were to buy one electric car (so about 12.5 million in Canada total) it would increase our electricity demand the equivalent of adding the entire province of Alberta to the national grid TWICE
So that is certainly a major challenge ”

I’m developing a personal transporter unit (like the one on Star Trek). I’m gonna vote for Obama and pocket the $500M “investment” when the prototype proves to be a dud. I’ll send postcards from the island I buy with the “government investment”!
I would never buy an EV until it is life cycle cost competitive. That said, the one argument in favor of them (if you are a green) is that their energy efficiency is greater, even with power distribution losses. Internal combustion engines achieve 25% – 30% maximum efficiency whereas power plants can approach 50% – 60% with distribution losses of about 10%. Oftentimes wondered why greens do not point this out. Likely because they do not understand it themselves – they are more into the “cause”.
EV? no chance – never will happen until supply of NG and Gasoline at current prices increases by an order of magnitude.
How long will that be?

[ Not sure if the accident risk question is about electrics or natural gas. For natural gas, there is not an elevated risk of explosion in the event of an accident. Unlike gasoline and diesel, the fuel will not pool on the ground. The fuel tanks have pressure relief devices that are safety features that are activated by increased heat levels.

The truth of the matter is, despite what the ride the bus crowd says, the automobile is here to stay for many more years and despite the protestations of the Sierra club et al. Those automobiles will be fuled primarily with gasoline or diesel.

1) Within a hundred years Canada will probably have changed out of all recognition;
2) It is people, not resources, that do not appear to be sustainable;
3) If electric vehicles had anything going for them people would have been borrowing and stealing forklift trucks from warehouses. It is not new technology, it is not a new idea. To quote Wikipedia, “electric cars enjoyed popularity between the mid-19th century and early 20th century, when electricity was among the preferred methods for automobile propulsion, providing a level of comfort and ease of operation that could not be achieved by the gasoline cars of the time.” And if they ever become competitive again, then we will see them become economically successful. Hell, in parts of Eastern Europe, taxis etc. were coal-fired at one time, and electric was not considered.
Well if nothing else is gained from this we now know these green industry “A”holes and their Enemedia typists will freeze as many babies as it takes to advance the scam.

I Just finished CPR training and the rescue worker training us told us that when an electric vehicle is in an accident, the first thing they do,even before rescue, is unhook the battery, otherwise they don’t even touch the car or anyone in it.
Having said that, I don’t have any problem with a viable electric car.

Why would electic cars be an economically attractive alternative in Ontario when they have a Premier who is driving the cost of electriciy up the way he drove fuel prices through the roof.
The problm is not what energy your car uses but that of government actively dabling in energy supply dynamics and creating false scarcity and inflated prices.
But I guess such questions are not part of the media narrative in the liberal ghetto of GTA.
CNG has 25% the caloric value of gasoline It would therefore have to sell for 1/4 the price of gasoline for it to be viable. And then only viable for large vehicles due to the size of the tank required. And electric vehicles are a joke. The Chevy Volt “Long Range” vehicle will give you 80km before full discharge. NO THANKS!
I just came back from Bermuda where gas is about $2.16/litre. The local paper there ran a story about how expensive it was there and compared prices to that of the EU. Surprisingly, there are nine nations in Europe that have more expensive gas!
I traveled all over that island on scooter and used less than a gallon of gas and for the record, I did not see one single Chevy Volt nor any Smart cars there. Or bird whacker either. It seems that Bermudians are a bit brighter than your typical western eco-leftoid-occupying wingding. Just an observation.
Only downside to this island paradise is that the government is run by the Progressive Labour Party. Kind of a NDP/Democrat cross breed that has a talent for growing itself wildly out of proportion to the economy but with a less pompous Obamma wanna-be.
