We Don’t Need No Stinking French Fry Grease

Technology Review;

In its early years, biotech company Amyris described itself as a start-up “applying its proprietary breakthrough technologies to address major global health and energy challenges.”
Its originally planned to make an anti-malaria drug, as well as renewable diesel and jet fuel, by feeding sugar to genetically-engineered microorganisms. Having spun off the anti-malaria technology to another company in 2008, yesterday Amyris said it’s giving up making fuels too. Instead, it will to focus on higher value products, such as moisturizers for cosmetics.
The company learnt first hand just how difficult it is to achieve the kind of yields seen in lab tests in large-scale production. In an update call for investors, CEO John Melo said he is “humbled by the lessons we have learned.”

  1. Just what everyone needs-cosmetic moisturizers.
Renewable lubricators for a certain segment of society perhaps?

  2. Mascoma. Ummmmmm. Now there is a name to watch,as it describes perfectly the mind set of leftards and eco-cultists.

  3. What!?!?
Listen – I can appreciate the sentiment but yes we DO need stinking freedom fry grease! It is filled with essential nutrients and junk foody goodness!!!

  4. Obama has contributed to mankind by giving us soft, supple skin.
Is there nothing he can’t do?

  5. “humbled by the lessons we have learned.”
IOW – you investors, including the taxpayer, you are so screwed. Again.
That is how ‘crony capitalism’ always ends.

  6. Most people don’t realize just how efficient the petroleum industry is at making fuel. If not for the taxes, gas would be cheaper than bottled water.

  7. I read the article and it has nothing to do with recycling used fryer oil.
Typical case of misdirected and misinformed criticism, in an attempt to be clever. I’ve come to expect this sort of thing from leftards so it always surprises me to see conservatives falling into that trap.
There is no end of misdirected investment in schemes that are found to be uneconomical. Renewable energy has it’s share, but not the exclusive experience of poor business decisions.

  8. Texas Canuck >
“Who said anything about recycling french fry grease?”
We need to ban French Fries altogether, again!
I’m sick of the French and their demands for our liberties, guns, and of course money. All the while they spend our money on cappuccino’s, gay porn, and ethnic immigrant servants to lick their boots and keep their voting block up.
    Hope that’s not off topic.

  9. I applaud them for their honesty. They could bamboozle the ever over reaching stupid Greenish. Forever on the tax dollar train in these days of green cons. Instead they look reality in the face, than say no.
Integrity instead of illusion . How refreshing.

  10. I applaud them for their honesty. They could bamboozle the ever over reaching disastrous Greenish. Forever on the tax dollar train in these days of green cons a plenty. Instead they look reality in the face, than say no.
Integrity instead of illusion . How refreshing.

You got that right. Because they couldn’t properly control their crazies, all of Canada was subjected to draconian gun control laws. Lets have a Canada wide referendum to kick Quebec out of Confederation.

  12. A $30 stock one year ago now trading just under $7. I sure would have enjoyed short selling this one had I known. It’s on sale 35% off just in the last two days.

Now THAT is the most sensible thing you have said here!

  14. Phantom, no kidding. Even as it is it’s still a lot cheaper than gatorade. And not too long ago, it was cheaper than bottled water, at least until the government started messing around with additives.

  15. I agree with Knight 99 the sooner these malignant manipulaters are kicked out of confederation the better off the ROC will be.Their goal is to turn the rest of the country into a multi-cult tower of Babel while turning Quebec into a uniligual island of French culture supported by Federal tax dollars.Someday Albertans will rise up and say “not another dime” and then Quebec will be the North American equivalent of Greece and Italy.

  16. referendum? referendum!
oh goody – a binding problem-free solution to sundry political questions… snort snort
i can’t wait until ‘nord du soixante’ gets elected and introduces a private member’s bill.
more than likely though – these concerns (that have been pointedly pointed out) will be resolved long before that ever happens.
it already looks like the long gun registry will be toast before you can say “i’m a wild-eyed hubristic wuchamacallit.”
it would be a bonus though if someone currently in ottawa would stand up soon and ask if it would be too much to include revenue generated from quebec hydro-electric power into the equalisation formula before that too is abolished. it’s good policy to put a heavy load down easy. makes less noise.

  17. it already looks like the long gun registry will be toast
    That’s just a start.
The illegal search and seizure “guilty until proven innocent” sections of the FA should also be removed.

  18. include revenue generated from quebec hydro-electric power into the equalisation formula
But, of course. I had no idea it wasn’t. Those devious frogs, somehow it doesn’t surprise me.

  19. “include revenue generated from quebec hydro-electric power into the equalisation formula”
my great granny wuz french, now I think I’ll go shoot her head stone

Normally I find most of North of 60’s comments tiresome.
However, I agree with this comment.
Maybe he should quite while he’s ahead.
