A North Carolina Father Responds to His Ungrateful Daughter

Tommy Jordan, a North Carolina father of a 15 year old daughter, was not pleased with what she had to say on Facebook. So he made a video (mild language warning but well worth watching) :

Full text of the Facebook message from Jordan’s ungrateful 15 year-old:

To my parents,
I’m not your damn slave. It’s not my responsibility to clean up your shit. We have a cleaning lady for a reason–her name is Linda, not Hannah. If you want coffee, get off your ass and make it yourself. If you want a garden, shovel the fertiliser yourself. Don’t sit back on your ass and watch me do it. If you walk into the house and get mud all over the floor that I just cleaned, be my guest. But clean it up after you’re done getting shit everywhere. I’m tired of picking up after you. You tell me at least once a day that I need to get a job. You could just pay me for all the shit that I do around the house. Every day when I get home from school, I have to do dishes, clean the counter tops, all the floors, make all the beds, do the laundry and get the trash. I’m not even going to mention all the work I do around your clinic. And if I don’t do all that every day, I get grounded. Do you know how hard it is to keep up with chores and schoolwork? It’s freaking crazy! I go to sleep at 10 every night because I’m too tired to stay up any longer to do anything else. I have to get up at 5 every morning to get ready for school. On the weekends I have to sleep with my door locked so my little brother won’t come get me up at 6. This is all true. And I’m tired of this bullshit. Next time I have to pour a cup of coffee, I’m gonna flip shit. I have no idea how I have a life. I’m gonna hate to see the day when you get too old to wipe your ass and you call me asking for help. I won’t be there.
(Signed)
Your Pissed Kid,
Hannah

  1. Note: If you watch the video on YouTube you’ll see that it has about 15 Million hits in just 3 days. Anyone who denies that this is an outcry from everyday, average people against the entitlement generation is fooling themselves!

  2. Let’s see now,unsafe use of a firearm,violation of his daughter’s Charter Rights,AND he’s a SMOKER,TOO!
I’m shocked by the violence inherent in that video!
The girl should run away to another city where she will easily find a nice young man to make her happy, although he will ask her to do a little work for him.
    Nothing too difficult though.

  3. I agree with everything he says….but the shooting the laptop was a little extreme. He should have just thrown it in the garbage. No doubt she will call social services and say she is afraid of her day and this video of him shooting the laptop will give the social workers reason to remove her from the home.
I see this young lady having a hard, horrible life…anyone who says what she said against her parents and her sense of entitlement is going down baby…going down hard.
    What goes around, comes around.

Tend to agree. At first, the .45 to the laptop was amusing, but I think it’s a bit over-the-top. Much better to remove the hard drive and keep the thing in plain sight for who-knows-how-long, so she can agonize over that.
Plus, this response should have been kept 1:1 with her, IMO. Yeah, I can see a public note saying he’s removed her pc and she’s under house penalty, but making all that dirty laundry public, while it likely made him feel good, won’t help the relationship. She’ll have a hate on for not only the dead pc, but for the public humiliation, as well.
I sympathize with Dad, however, especially with her “don’t as ME to wipe your butt” comment. That would have wounded deeply. She’s clearly an ingrate, and needs a commeuppance, but if it were me, I’d ground her for ages, confiscate the pc, and probably a few other things, but privately.

You have to go all the way to a range with a .45ACP legally in Canada. Then depending on the range, you may not be able to shoot anything but paper. 🙁
    AtlanticJim >
My Kimber gold combat II is built for 8 rnds. You can also buy 10 rnd extended mags for the 1911 if you don’t mind the bottom stick-out.

  6. The whining and handwringing over this is laughable.
Snivvers would be freaking IF HE OPENED UP A CAN O’ WHUPASS AND PADDLED HER SORRY, ENTITLED AND SPOILED ASS.
Snivvers would be whining either way.
But you’re right. Go ahead honey, here’s a couple hundred, go get yourself some meth and pay for your addiction to it by peddling your sorry ass for Jimmah Da Pimp.
You’re special. Here’s a trophy for showing up.
    Bah.

  7. Have not confirmed this, but apparently, according to the comments, a facebook page was set up with the daughter’s response stating that the cops and CPS did show up at the home and investigated.
He was cleared of any wrong doing and the entire family, including the daughter, sided with the father.

  8. nick >
“Guy’s a jackass. He’s now lost the war for his daughter. It’s his daughter, for chrissakes!”
The guy sounds like he has a good grip on reality, she does not. When all else fails as it obviously has it’s time to sink or swim. Who would want a loser adult daughter like her around later in life if she doesn’t wake up?
Step up or good riddance, the whole issue with our society today are these lazy good for nothing whiners that suck everyone else’s energy away.

  9. cowboy kind of father who hated techonology and laptop and blame his daughter attitute with more anger attituite
This father has anger problems and scary and by shooting laptoop show he is drunk or has mental problems and he need to see pscylogist to teach him how to deal with his daughter reall scary
he can not understand teen and not like freedom of speech or when daughter not understand teach her with fear of bolute to laptop
now we know where his daughter get anger and f and b word come from
I hate grounding culture of english people bring so many angry women to public as result we can see
teen daugther need kindness and wake up 5 am to 10 pm this must more than what he tried to said few mintues of work she must do more than what he try to hide
why not pay her to do job better to pay clean lady to do job
he write every day on board what she can do or donot this is too much she is not his employee to do this
This man is abuse daughter even if he has lazy daughter this is not right method to teach her with anger to fix her
she is alone and like talk with computer
girl has step mother and man married and not give her enough love and how deal with teens is not method this cowboy men deal with it
because she live in father house and under his role of home do and do not need but not with tourture if she did not listen she put her 3 month grounding again he is abusive father need some one check on him
I hated father or mother who are torture and take freedom of speech and freedom of the act of their teen they are teen and we are adult and must understand different age too
I do not support his daughter but defintly i did not like the way she talk to her may new wife or new step mother did or use daughter to do more cleaning as wake up 5 am and sleep late must has more village farm life style of torture her

  10. OK – you did read the story???
    The guy works with computers!
Personally, in my PMT days, I would have loved to take out my frustration this way.
As a grey-haired lady fed to the teeth with reading about foul-mouthed ungrateful kids degrading their parents, then I say HOORAY FOR HIM.
The brat will hopefully get the message, stay off drugs (which was most likely her next step), graduate from school and become useful to society.
She sounds like a typical occupier.

  11. AtlanticJim, I believe that Wilson introduced a 10 round single stack magazine for the government model 1911 about 20 years ago. Google ‘wilsoncombat’ and go shopping. Warning the website may cause NFAS (New Firearm Acquisition Syndrome) which can be very expensive to cure.
All the modern high capacity pistols, such as my Para-ordnance P14-45, have a big butt due to the double-stack magazine. The 1911 fits my hand a lot better than all the new plastic fantastic crap.
He didn’t really make his case well, probably because of his anger. He perhaps should have mentioned how much time Hannah’s parents have spent on her in her almost 16 years, and how 15 minutes of chores are a minimal repayment and also a preparation for when she gets a job and later has her own home to keep clean.

  12. Ok >
“This father has anger problems and scary and by shooting laptoop show he is drunk or has mental problems…”
    No not at all.
He was just practicing for the day that Islam will become a problem in the US like it is in Europe, as well all do.

  13. Islam encourage parents to be good with daughter twice kind than son
he inisit to send 15 years girl to work in hand of all stranger is not ok for me understand to send their kid to work place for money and dicipline may made her life to more danger
sometimes parents do anything and all good job and their kids are not listening and this is may link to mental illness in early age in children
and no fault to parents and just need to educated themselves
She only need to take B complex or omaga vitamin tablet or right food to reduce her anger
and good parents to control her behaviour
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parent_Management_Training
    the main point is this
mental illness lead to easy attract those kids to drug and other criminal activities because they are not smart to made wrong and right or distinguish and analyse freind and enemy
if mental illnesss not get control among children this can lead them to their wrong behavioural in their adult year time too
understand if this mentall illness or only behaviour problems and all these two can help by drugs or counsulting for both parents and children
authority sometimes made mistake between mental illness and criminal and the way youth and teen talk may thing they are cirminal but may not they only are mentall ill and not able to explain themselves and easy they go to hand of criminal court and no easy exit door for them
people are not educated to know the different of these two groups
she is white and may bully as we can see her parents are bully are may facing this behaviour problems called:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oppositional_Defiant_Disorder
    -and-
for black African kids grow among white kids with culture and discrimination may develop more
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conduct_Disorder
    -and-
for kids who are not smart in school and not able to concentrate and finish home work we can call them
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attention-Deficit_Hyperactivity_Disorder
    -and-
kids who born with mental illness such as
in Autism Spectrum Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Down syndrome has no cure yet just can supervisor need for them
then teen can has delution of imgine their parents hated them but that is not true
work with teen is big challgnes to all parents

  14. Just like I posted on facebook:
Lose the handgun, but otherwise I agree 100%.
People, leftists mostly, seem to forget- parents are NOT your FRIENDS.
They have to turn you from a self-serving animal to a confident, loving, capable human being. That won’t ever happen if the kid is in charge….rant over.

  15. (I recognized ok’s blather a few words in—and skipped that post.)
I have to say I’m with the dad on this, even though his response might seem somewhat extreme.
The extreme narcissism of a critical mass of young people, who know that the system’s set up to believe their stories and let them off the hook, is both real and a real threat. (Think OWS.) Those who think the young can’t be deliberately and spitefully malicious are living in Fantasyland. Kids need boundaries: they’re not being provided these days. So there are more kids—like this young woman, it seems—who feel entitled to keep pushing the limits. It seems that her dad’s not putting up with it anymore.
When parents and other adults were allowed to discipline kids, this acting out was usually stopped by the time a child was two or three. Kids are actually born with rather barbaric tendencies: “It’s me against the world and I’ll fight for what I want”. Unless the adults disabuse these little emperors of this idea, they continue to behave like despots. The earlier the lesson is learned, that the world doesn’t revolve around their every whim, the easier it is for everyone. These days, the lesson is being learned—if at all—later and later—and with no help from “the authorities”, whose default position is to take the kids’ side, no matter how self-serving it may be. The result: far too many little brats in adolescent and adult bodies. They’re not at all nice to be around. If no one stops them, they become bigger and bigger bullies. No wonder there are so many around these days.

  16. Waste of perfectly good bullets and laptop. Give the thing to the school, then she can see it there every friggin’ day. Being used by some other kid.
Good video, but shotgun shooting it off a fencepost, MUCH more telegenic. Lots of flying pieces!

  17. This is an example of a firm, loving, southern dad. The kid is not screaming that she is abused. The hand gun made excellent punctuation to the point. I love the fact that the dog told on her, through no fault of his own.

  18. At least his daughter comes by her sense of theatrics honestly. I thought that was as funny as hell. I hope it’ll clear the air for both of them

  19. Been more than once that I’ve wanted to shoot my computer, but then I have mental images of all those bytes cowering in the corners and the rage dies down. Usually when I reboot the little bastards are well behaved. That’l teach em whose boss.

  20. Well folks. Welcome to the world of teenage rebellion. The good news is, they do get over it and all the things you thought they weren’t listening to, surprise, surprise, it did get through.
As far as dad is concerned, I can understand his frustration, but I’m not so sure his behavior is much more mature than hers. I hope he sticks to the threats he made, but he should remove himself from the war.
She will grow up and there’s a long term relationship that he is in danger of completely destroying. Daughter sounds like she was spoiled/grossly indulged when she was younger. Parents who indulge their children reap what they sow later on.

  21. Atlantic Jim,
The 9 rounds from the 1911 is an 8 round magazine plus one in the pipe. The 8 rounder from my old 1911 was a single stack, so no worries about fat grips.
Tom Jordan, father of the year.

  22. ok says, “Islam encourage parents to be good with daughter twice kind than son…” You MUST be joking. We all know how islam treats it’s daughters. Asshat.

  23. His daughters character development was more important to him than a laptop and the $130 on software. Many parents are too materialistic.
He had already done the take away the computer, talk to her, grounding route – it had no effect. This certainly has.
He seemed calm, cool and collected, not an impulsive act – thought out.
One person noted that she presented the video to her fellow psychology student’s at university – the response was that the father did the right thing.
The daughter’s response was geez Dad you didn’t have to shoot the laptop.
I read that he donated all the money accumulated from the you tube hits to MD, so far it’s been over $3000.00.

  24. I m with the Dad here all the way, this girl was on her way to drug addiction and peddling her A$$ for the benefit of some pimp named Bubba or Leroy. Her Dad was smart enough to see this and did something to bring her to her senses.I guarantee that 5 years from now she will gladly say thanks Dad for caring enough to do what had to be done.

  25. No doubt she will call social services and say she is afraid of her day and this video of him shooting the laptop will give the social workers reason to remove her from the home.
    ~Mike L
That was possibly the father’s crafty end game all along.
Proving once again that their are few problems that cannot be solved with the judicious use of an automatic pistol and a full mag of CAP.45

  26. Can we conclude all lazy kids who are not clean up thier beds and thier rooms and thier cloth or lazy in school works are in drugs use addiction and internet addiction then
gun treat is only solution to bring fear on them to stop them
    browaaoo
such smart kids and parents here

  27. When my son was 15 he got real lippy and one evening he was egging me on and I smacked him across the back of the head. He called the cops who gave me the option of going to counciling or jail.(as I explained to the cop-some choice) Anyway 6 ,months later we got in to see the councillor who proceeded to tear a strip off my son. I actually felt sorry for him. He learned a big lesson, as did I.
In this case the father was a bit extreme but got his message across loud and clear without any physical violence to the kid.And she will be without her laptop which, for a teen, is the biggest punishment of all(next to their cellphone, of course)

  28. “I m with the Dad here all the way, this girl was on her way to drug addiction and peddling her A$$ for the benefit of some pimp named Bubba or Leroy”
Wow. You divine a great deal from 2 minutes worth of reading.

  29. Let us see now,
One suspects that the daughter learned her behaviour from her father and then improved it after consultations with her friends and schoolmates.
You see, if you leave your children, youngsters, what have you, on their own, they will take into the wilderness and do their best to survive.
You have to remember that they don’t have much to go on. They, themselves thinking that they know everything, this is common with the teenagers, if you are parent, you know.
On the other hand they really don’t know anything about life, even if you think they do. They do their best with what they got, which is waaay not enough.
If you decide to be in charge, you basically will have no life for the time they grow up. Trust in this, firsthand experience.
It is rather simple decision, you look after your career, climbing the ladder and eave you children to look after themselves, or be prepared for no life.
Suspicion here is that Jordan is in the first category.
If, on the other you take the second here is what you do:
You read them book every night to go to sleep while they learn how. You can’t let up it is an essence of a child to listen to stories so they learn about things.
Once they go to school, you really become busy. Homework, hockey. Homework baseball. Homework basketball. Homework soccer. Homework boy scouts. Homework boys club. And on, and on, and on.
Suddenly you wake up from your social hibernation and don’t know what happened in the world for all those years.
This sounds perhaps worst that it actually is, though that is the general drift for those years.
Then they go to more schools, if you stuck with the regime, they, more likely than not will be OK.
After that you are proud of your sons like hell. You are proud and respected by them.
The only difficult part is, simply because of necessities of life they do their thing and you don’t get to be with them as much as you would like.

  30. I’m with those who think the daughter deserved some punishment, but that shooting the PC was over the top. How about just changing the password instead of blowing the thing to pieces?
One of the most important rules I learned in management was “Praise in public; criticize in private”, which apparently this man never heard.
On the evidence, he’s parented badly in the past, he’s had problem in his own relationships (reference to both Mom and step-mom), and he takes measures that strike some reasonable people as extreme. It’s irrelevant to me that the daughter is purportedly telling people she thinks her dad the right thing; do you seriously think after this little stunt, she’s going to criticize her dad in public? I wish I had the time and energy to follow this girl. I’m betting by second year of university, she’s long gone from home, and won’t return for years, if ever.
Anyone who thinks that public humiliation and extreme punishments are the way to 1) instruct people, and 2) build healthy relationships is a few rounds short of a full clip, IMHO.

  31. Talk about washing your dirty shorts in public. What an ass hat! If I was his daughter, I’d be gone at the earliest possible moment. He may feel real good about having put her in her place but, a few years from now, he’ll wish that he had a daughter.

  32. This guy is more than just an idiot, he’s a pervert. His daughter needs to run away from home, immediately! She’d be better off living in a house full of Black Panthers. Any bond there may have been between them has been broken by this little episode. She needs to run, and never look back.

  33. I’m beginning to think the whole episode was contrived, not unlike “balloon boy” a few years back.
Although public humiliation is not conducive to building relationships, young people do need to remember that the internet is a public space and to not post anything they would not be comfortable with the whole world seeing or appearing on the front page or on the evening news. The post the daughter made, was addressed “to my parents” and her parents did indeed read the, disrespectful humiliating to them as well, message. I doubt she will post nude or semi-nude pictures of herself online. Also, the first thing a prospective employer does is search for a Facebook profile on applicants.
As for the mention of the step-wife, for all anyone knows his wife may have passed away and he could have been a widower before re-marrying. Regardless, the daughter does live with her father as opposed to her mother.
According to random reports which I can not confirm, the daughter was allowed to post on Facebook after a heart to heart with her father and informed people that she was not suicidal and that she does not have any psychological issues as a result and that the [fiasco] has been satisfactorily resolved.
The response videos and comments from other teens and young adults are surprisingly in favour of the father’s actions. There are many single parent homes where the father is uninvolved.

  34. I don’t have any issue with what the Dad did, I probably would have curbed her entitlement issues
when she was a little younger and in a less public way, but whatever works.
This one incident will in no way destroy his relationship with his daughter, it may go a long way to improving it.

  35. L-Lori:
You’re correct, he could be a widower. It was the way he referred to both mom and step-mom in the present tense that led me to the conclusion that he was divorced.

  36. KevinB at 1:56 AM: “Anyone who thinks that public humiliation and extreme punishments are the way to 1) instruct people, and 2) build healthy relationships is a few rounds short of a full clip, IMHO.”
    =============
Exactly!! My daughter did that to her dad and I. We had a very messy divorce and had spent too much time fighting over everything. He had the kids, which is another story in itself, and he used to indulge her to no end. When she started to rebel, he’d promise to buy her some new toy if she behaved. So she behaved for a short while, and when the desire for a new toy welled up inside her, she knew how to get one. All she was looking for was boundaries. A healthy application of the word “no” would have helped, but she never got them and ended up in a drug rehab, which changed her life, thank God.
But this man’s behavior is scarcely better than his daughter’s. He seems to be involved in an ever escalating war, a power struggle, with his child. In fact, I consider it worse, because he’s supposed to be the adult.
She (my daughter) lived with me for a while and I could see she was playing me off against her dad. I wanted to kick her out, but the law wouldn’t let me do that until she turned 18. These kids know very well what the law allows and doesn’t allow their parents to do. In any case, I let her know in no uncertain terms that the minute she turned 18, if her behaviour hadn’t improved she’d be homeless. Sooo, the minute she turned 18 she miraculously became a mature, responsible young woman. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The transformation was sudden and a complete 180 degrees. She’s now a very responsible young mother of two little ones. I sure hope they don’t put her through what she put her dad and I through, but I suspect they won’t because she’s not spoiling them rotten.
Regarding the daughter in this case, I don’t think she thought her father wouldn’t find her rant on Facebook. She could have put it there, knowing full well her father would dig in to it, to prove a point.
I think they both need some help. The fact that there is a “step-mother” in the family suggests there may be something deeper going on with daughter than meets the eye. Step-mother AND mom, too, all need to confront her (daughter) and probably need to stop some shit that they might be doing in the tangled relationship.

  37. My dad would have managed to handle this out of the public eye. It would have been pretty damned frightening, too. I consider, taking everything else about him into account, that I’ve been blessed with a pretty damned good father.

  38. I am blessed to be without children…..and this confirms that opinion.
I shall have no kids to care for me in my dotage….I guess we are all in the same boat.
Keep yer stick on the ice…….
