  1. Diana West sees the all-too-familiar “moral equivalence among the intellectuals” in her review of Deborah Scroggins’s dual biography of jailed al-Qaida terrorist Aafia Siddiqui and Ayaan Hirsi Ali.
    Excerpt:

As the debate over Islam and Islamic terror erupted in Holland, Scroggins writes: “Some Dutch spoke of ‘the Ayaan effect,’ a spirit of fear and rancor that seemed to have bewitched the country.” Get it? It’s not the jihad, stupid, it’s “the Ayaan effect.”
By bizarre contrast, Scroggins regards Siddiqui’s jihad with empathy-nurturing neutrality. The result isn’t so much “Islam, the West, what’s the difference?” – the trope of moral equivalence during the U.S.-USSR Cold War. It’s more: Islam, the West, who is responsible for the violence? Who is reacting to whom? Who is putting on the burka to fend off the bikini? What virgin wouldn’t hate a whore? One more time, it’s all our fault.
Or, in this case, Hirsi Ali’s fault.
Her offense? Hirsi Ali failed to submit to the never-never cant that “moderation” is a hallmark of Islam (no sacred Islamic texts support it), while she publicly flayed its teachings of conquest and supremacism.

  2. now all he has to do is repeat that process 3 or 4 million times…wouldn’t it be priceless if it turns out her husband’s job was cut due to ‘green’ technology with it’s $2 million per, but bankrupt-after-one-payday ‘jobs’
During his Google+ hangout Pres. Obama tells a woman that her husband shouldn’t be unemployed from the growth he has seen in the economy. Obama said he finds it “interesting” because he is getting “the word” that someone in her husband’s job field “should be able to find something right away.”
Obama offered to do something if she would just send him her husband’s resume.
The woman wants to know why Obama is extending visas for foreigners when there is tons of demand for American jobs by Americans.
“I don’t know what your husband’s speciality [is], but I can tell you that there is a huge demand around the country for engineers,” Obama told the woman.
“I understand that,” she responded. “But how am — given the list that you’re getting, I mean we’re not getting that. You said in the State of the Union address for business leaders to ask what can they do to bring jobs back to America
During the back and forth between Obama and the wife of an unemployed engineer, Obama asked for his resume.
“Can I ask you what kind of engineer your husband is?,” Obama said to the wife of the unemployed engineer.
“He’s a semiconductor engineer,” she responded.
“It is interesting to me — and I meant what I said if your send me your husband’s resume, I’d be interested in finding out exactly what’s happening right there because the word that we’re getting is that somebody in that type of high-tech field, that kind of engineer, should be able to find something right away.

  4. Companies aren’t hiring Americans if they can find qualified professionals overseas. It costs too much to hire Americans, compared with equally qualified people in other countries. American companies are capitalists, not patriots.

I’m not sure if he’s ever had the pleasure of a Sinuscopy,

  7. About five years ago a friend forwarded me an email subscription to an interesting little online resource called Wordsmith.org — “The Magic of Words” — which sends out a new word each day and provides its etymology, and historic/notable examples of its usage, and so on. It’s been a nice respite from inflamed partisan politics….until this morning when, out of the blue, its founder, an Indian-born vegan named Anu Garg, introduced a weeklong series on Charles Dickens characters whose names have become commonly-used adjectives and nouns with this spiel:

Next week marks the 200th anniversary of the British novelist Charles Dickens’s birth. The London of Dickens’s time was a bleak place: little social support, debtors’ prisons, pollution, and children working in factories.
If you look at the Republican presidential aspirants today you’d think they want to return to those good old times: no environmental regulations; no worker protection laws; no social safety net; and children working as janitors…

I don’t know what is it about progressives that compels them to introduce hideously time-bound partisan political contentiousness into subjects that have nothing to do with party politics. Last year, a well-known stereo review magazine lost a ton of subscribers after the Mr. Progressive publisher presumptuously decided that articles about pre-amp and turntable specs were a good place for him to harangue viewers with his views about “the environment.”
As for Wordsmith – if there are any subscribers out there – the “unsubscribe” button is right there on the bottom of each day’s email.
    Hint-hint.

  8. Gord (11:27), you’d have to have almost inhumanly fast reflexes to change lanes at those speeds.

  9. Ebd: the kind I’m talking about aren’t as fast and the ability to block passing makes it tough to go too fast and cause a crash. I’ve driven traditional and digital slot cars and the difference in entertainment value is night and day.

  10. Ahh, that makes sense if they’re not that ridiculously fast. It would be a lot more fun to be able to pass and jostle for position.

  12. Harper, clever fellow, hints at possible pension cut-backs and successfully diverts attention in the media from the hot potato
    Alberta pipelines topic.
Wondering about pipelines and why shipping crude is better than shipping refined value-added products?
Looked through recent posts here, however didn’t see anything. So many questions. How did China and Cinepec leverage Harper into 180 degree about face on his views re foreign infrastructure ownership?
Looking for some insight from those of you far better versed on Alberta oil than I.
    Questions on my blog.

  13. The issue of shipping crude vs refining locally and then shipping product has come up here repeatedly, Tony. You must not have been paying attention.
You ship crude; it’s a natural product, comes right out of Gaia’s veins, or gallbladder or something. Anyway, it’s natural. It’s also thick and sticky, and while combustible, it’s not very explosive. So if you get a pipeline leak, it won’t flow very far, nor very fast, nor will it (ordinarily) present an explosion hazard.
You ship product, you may need more than one line, although different products can be shipped sequentially in pipelines, with little mixing at the interface. Most of the products, particularly gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel, are much less viscous than crude oil, and will flow faster, farther, and soak into soil more rapidly if the pipeline is ruptured. Worse environmental hazard by far; and if the product spilled is gasoline, a potential disaster.
Also, it takes a long time to get a refinery permitted and built; pipelines are simpler. And refineries do emit some air pollution. All said and done, better to ship the crude away.

  14. This writer tries his hardest exempt Joe Paterno from his moral cowardice. Rightly saying the School Directors used him as a sacrifice to cover thier own sins. Its an ode to the old boys network in sports.
The commenter’s don’t agree. They crucify Michael Novak for his blatant white wash. One calls Paterno a modern Pontious Pilate. That was mild. Boy you sure learn the full story from the Bloggers.

PROVIDENCE, RI, January 30, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – Demonstrators from the Occupy Wall Street movement threw condoms on Catholic schoolgirls, refused to allow a Catholic priest to give a closing prayer, and shouted down a pro-life speaker at a Rhode Island right to life rally on Thursday, according to its organizer. The event marked the third time protesters associated with the movement have disrupted a pro-life meeting in a week.
About two-dozen members of Occupy Providence hiked from Burnside Park to the 39th Annual Pro-Life State House Rally organized by the Rhode Island State Right to Life Committee on Thursday. Protesters with Occupy Providence.
The pro-life organization’s executive director, Barth E. Bracy, told LifeSiteNews.com that, near the end of the rally, the Occupiers “strategically fanned out with military precision.””

“Wheat gained on speculation that cold weather in Europe will hurt winter crops that have no protective snow cover and as Russia contemplates grain-export restrictions. Corn and soybeans rose.
Temperatures tomorrow may fall as low as minus-15 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-26 Celsius) in Ukraine, Telvent DTN Senior Meteorologist Joel Burgio said in a report yesterday. The low temperatures may damage plants that aren’t covered by snow. Russia will discuss in two weeks the possibility of starting a grain-export duty, the deputy agriculture minister said.

Residents in a Cornish village have bought their own snowplough and gritter after they were cut off for a week in a blizzard during previous winters.

“Finlandization: …is a term used to describe the influence that one powerful country may have on the policies of a smaller neighboring country…it referred to the decision of a country to not challenge a more powerful neighbor in foreign politics while maintaining national sovereignty. Commonly in reference to Finland’s policies vis-à-vis the Soviet Union during the Cold War, but could refer to similar international relations, such as Denmark’s attitude toward Germany between 1871 and 1940, and Taiwan’s relation with China since 2008.”

  22. Is it just me or does anyone else find this editorial from the Toronto Star extremely hypocritical? Isn’t this the same group of “progressive journalists” who consistently chastise anyone who “dares” criticize the barbaric aspects of Radical Muslims? Isn’t this the same group who scolded Jason Kenney over his decision about the Niqab at citizenship ceremonies?!?
They and their like minded comrades have set the tone in this country for any public official to be extremely reticent about criticizing non-whites & non-Christians ABOUT ANYTHING. Now the Toronto Star Editorial Board is getting on their high horse looking to blame others?!?!? I’m speechless.

But according to McMaster demographics economist Byron Spencer, there is no need to rework the OAS plan. Spencer says the government does need to decide whether or not it will raise contribution rates or the retirement age. Why is the Harper government so determined to overhaul Canada’s OAS?”

Around the time of the run-up to Bush43’s second term I got a Christmas card, outa the blue after at least 10 years of silence, from an old professor friend who added a P.S. “let’s hope we get Bush outa there”. On a Christmas Card!! How surprised I was to be presumptuously included in the WE.
