  1. It’s actually a very good idea. When I was a young pup and spent a lot of time in Detroit, you could get in serious trouble by making a wrong turn. You could get in trouble by being on the wrong side of the street, the Grosse Point neighbourhood boundary roads come to mind. I don’t think that problem has lessened any,no,not at all.

  2. Detroit won’t even be on the map, just one big detour.
Lots of US cities are no go zones at night. I made the mistake of driving through Houston city center after 6pm once. You only do it once.

  3. Given the Caledonia debacle in Ontario, can we expect a Canadian real estate version to assist prospective home buyers in avoiding native populations?

    Superb idea!!! Get me two.

  5. Also too above,JJM, that means the entire province of B.C. would be left out!!! A win-win.
Now let’s expand it to include leftard.socia;ist.commie/greenie territory. Yeehaw. Only AB/Sask left.

  6. JJM,that’s a good idea! There’s nothing worse than looking at a nicely priced house only to find it’s on leased land from an Indian reserve.
Google the Musqeam Reserve leasing debacle, you’ll see what I mean.

  7. Hope springs eternal and the social engineering goes on unabated. No government can admit they have screwed up over and over again. It is glaringly obvious when you watch any TV show that the person in power is black or the judge will be black as well as the desperate search for a flow of black heroes being mandatory in every movie. The problem is that it’s not based on reality as one visit to most American cities will confirm. Even successful blacks dont want to live in black enclaves and are more comfortable surrounded by civilzed structure. There are strong parallels between our Native population and the US black population with the inability to motivate them out of the victim mentality. Everything wrong is whities fault and must be rectified with money and endless support. No personal motivation required. Those blacks/natives that do find the motivation to better themselves seem to have little trouble in leaving the stagnation behing and joining mainstream society but at the realization that they are only victims if the want to be, and they don’t. I’m sure my rant is not politically correct but the blame game can only go on for so many generations before someone states the obvious. Get a education, get a job and get a life. You have the same opportunities as a poor white kid. But saying this is probably racist.

  8. The use of the word ghetto to characterise inner-city aggregates of black people is grossly misleading. A ghetto was a community in the full sense of the word – with a religious centre, an educational system, poor relief, the various trades and crafts, and probably a security system of some kind – everything which the black population aggregations lack.
Three days ago I was in the original ghetto, in Venice (after dark, too). It is still the centre of a small community of Orthodox Jews, happy-looking individuals for the most part. All of the buildings were of course in good order, with prosperous little shops and a couple of restaurants – as has been the case for the last five hundred years or so.

“Will it keep us all away from the dreaded “Tar Sands?”
Everyone you meet will offer you a job that pays way more than reasonable back home. That’s gotta tick you off.

  10. Is there going to be a Canadian version that avoids zones of collectivism, where your efforts and future are owned by the state?
If so, I wonder what the country will look like on the maps when Quebec is replaced by a here-be-dragons zone?

  11. Been wonderin’ why all those Yankees don’t drive through North Glengarry anymore….

  12. I don’t think allot of people quite grasp the dangerous situation the US is in with the millions of illiterate “misunderstood youth” living in ghetto’s & lower income suburbia existing on welfare.
It will not take much of an economic hit at this point to reduce the flow of checks that will unleash fury in the streets. These people represent well over 45 million on food stamps alone, along with countless others who simply feel disgruntled and entitled.
There is no putting this back in the bottle anymore, it’s simply a matter of time until the match hit’s the tinder box.

  13. First hand experience.
Some years ago, took a holiday down 101 from Port Angeles to LA. In San Francisco, the city by the bay, drove around hither and yon.
Eventually it has become apparent that every one around was African. That in itself was not a problem until a red light.
In front, the first car at the red light was occupied by 4 young guys, then there were us just behind and three of four other cars behind us.
The young guys clearly noticed something pale in the car behind them, this idea was derived from the fact that when the light turned green, they would not move. The cars behind started to honk and bypass on the right, I did not honk, though it would not matter anyway.
The light turned red, yes red, again and the youngsters started to move and went their way. I don’t know if you can imagine the absolute relief on our part. Somehow we looked up the map and exited the area.
The Microsoft feature is an excellent idea, it will definitely work for me.

  14. I agree with Mr Lewis. If the device lets drivers avoid Jewish areas, there will be no cries of “Racist!”

  15. Great idea, can it tell me voting patterns so I can avoid NDP favouring areas?
I remember driving back through Detroit from a race track in Michigan when we had to stop for gas on Livernois Ave. I have never seen so much razor wire. It was on every commercial building and every house had bars on all the windows including the second storey. Naive me, I couldn’t understand why the gas pump wouldn’t work. It was the only time I had to pay first before they activated the pump from inside. The cashier was behind a 3″ thick bullet proof pane of glass with a red phone prominently labelled ‘Police’ within easy reach. There were more video cameras then in a bank in Canada.
I would definitely want this Microsoft feature if I were travelling in those parts again.

  16. An app like this is definitely part of a proper security set-up for travel in the USA.
I recall driving in fancy schmancy Stamford Connecticut and getting on the wrong side of the highway at night. One block from expensive downtown shopping at Nieman Marcus, you go under a bridge and come out in Drugville.
The USA is as safe as Canada… except for certain very sharply defined areas in most cities where they’ll kill you for five bucks. Knowing where those little pustules of doom are is a potential life saver.
“Avoid ghetto” forsooth. Its racist GENIUS it is!

“It was the only time I had to pay first before they activated the pump….”
Now we are seeing it in many places in Canada. I’ve had to pay first at a couple of places now. One I just drove away and went to another. Ain’t diversity and cultural enrichment grand?
Now our kids walk around with their pants around their knee’s imitating the black culture we imported. They haven’t changed one bit, it’s we who are changing to suit the ghetto lifestyle.

  18. There are ghettos and there are ghettos.Traveling through both one realizes the difference.
In Europe the ghetto reference is for an historical reference to Fascist Socialism and an area of observnce and remembrance.
In the inner cities of North America; United Kingdom; and France; The other ghettos regardless of European or North American location are desparate areas of tragedy for uneducated, unmotivated and untrusting people abandoned by the “let’s make them better policies” of unaware, unmotivated and untrustworthy politicos and their syncophants.
This not new but ghettoization is advancing and at accelerated rates. As the use of other peoples money becomes increasingly acceptable and available the desparate politicos and other unscrupulous people do not know what to do. “How can we maintain the status quo until my watch is over” is their mantra
    Cheers;

  19. The most offensive aspect of this whole story is that M$ was given a patent for what is essentially a trivial obvious idea. This is just one more example of why software patents have to be eliminated.
Before the days of GPS, I remember taking a map of LA and using a highlighter to outline areas of the city that it wouldn’t be a good idea to drive in. The last time I was in Boston at about 04:00, I was very glad of the Bostonian custom of not stopping at red lights as my meandering route to the airport had gotten me into some very rough looking areas where I was the only paleface around. I contend that my highlighted city maps constitute prior art and would invalidate the patent if I could find them.
All this is doing is just taking local knowledge about areas to avoid and making it available to anyone who has wireless internet. Of course, lacking non-local prey, the criminals in the worst areas will simply expand their perimeter. In states that have CCW this will be a dangerous thing for them to do but I think it will be a classic example of how measuring a system perturbs it.

  20. I’m waiting for an open source implementation of this. At which point I will promptly write a plug-in that will > /dev/null Toronto and Montreal.

  21. One day circa 1995 in New Orleans while leaving a local restaurant after breakfast on Claiborne Ave near Tulane Univ I was stopped by a couple of tourists from NZ doing a bicycle your of the city and asked directions. I noticed that the maps they had prepared by their travel agency had all the “no-go” sections of the city clearly marked out outlined in red w. red hash-marks. My heart sank. The maps looked nothing so much as the maps/charts we used in Vietnam when on bombing missions over N. Vietnam to point out all the anti-aircraft missile and artillery emplacements/areas. “So its come to this, has it, ” I thought. Of course, civilian society is only now catching up. The preparation of those hand-marked mission charts we used 44 yrs ago have long since been automated..
