The downfall of the greatest country the world has ever seen, Right Before Our Eyes!
The collapse of the US economy can be directly traced to Clinton’s term and his actions including the Community Reinvestment Act and the repeal of Glass-Steagall. Subsequent presidents did nothing to stop it.
The C.R.A. forced banks to give mortgages to people who had little or no hope of ever making payments, and started the economy down a slippery slope. They had to make the loans and there were all kinds of regulations that were put in place by the Fed government to make sure the loans would be made. Repealing Glass-Steagall allowed them to package up the obviously bad debt and sell it off. They were put in a position in which they HAD to make bad loans and were given a method to escape the repercussions.
The reason Canada’s economy didn’t have the same problem is that in Canada you must have money up front to get a mortgage, 5% minimum equity with a triple-A credit rating for private residence and 20% equity for commercial. Simple regulations like that protect the economy. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it’s a hell of a lot better than the ‘wild west’ attitudes in the US system.

Ummm, respeck.
The reason Canada’s economy didn’t have the same problem is that in Canada you must have money up front to get a mortgage, 5% minimum with an excellent credit rating for private residence and 20% for investment property. Simple regulations like that protect the economy.
They need a D9 cat or equivalent to bulldoze the council chambers and relocate in one of them fine Detroit homes, stat.
Nice use of the English language there by the honorable councilwomen. “You cain’t disrespeck me up in here!”
What is that, Ebonics?
Maybe if the bailiff Tazered them every time they violated Robert’s Rules of Order…
So Lefties, anybody wondering why Detroit is all busted? Bigger government… controlled by those guys! Awesome eh?
Ken Cockrel needs to give his pimp hand a workout.
It amazes me that they EXPECT to be treated with a respect that they are a long way from deserving.
Repealing Glass Steagall had absolutely NOTHING to do with packaging loans into MBS. It prohibited Investment Bank, Commercial Bank combinations. Only one CB/IB got into trouble – Citigroup. Europe has always had CB/IB combinations, and that wasn’t what caused the problem. If anything, those combinations helped weather the storm.
Of the worst bank failures such as Wachovia, WaMu, and IndyMac, NONE of them were investment banks and NONE of them were on Wall Street.
Securitization was legal before and after DIDMCA, Garn-St. Germain, and Gramm-Leach-Bliley ended Glass-Steagall. It was Bill Clinton’s HUD secretaries Cisneros and Cuomo who ushered in “affordable” mortgages such as interest only and Neg Am that created a cheap, at the money option. This encouraged speculation.
You’re not even right about CRA. While CRA does promote loans that wouldn’t otherwise be made, it was too small to have caused this crisis. The entire “affordable housing” regime which included CRA was a partial cause. GSE securitization, trade imbalances, and low interest rates were contributing factors.
There you go again with your IQ just slightly North of 60. A little bit of reading would spare you a whole lot of embarrassment.

Who voted for these fools? Its like watching Urban porn.
You get the government with results you voted for. WE ought to have had that lesson burned into us under Trudeau.
People just up & left that had any sense.
I don’t always agree with the idea that voters deserve the politicians which they elect since there are times when voters are not given any good options to vote for, but in the case of Detroit, I think the idea is true.
One of the big problems in the decaying cities of America is that blacks continue to vote according to the “wisdom” that blacks should always stick together politically. That may have been important or even necessary during the civil rights movement in order to reform the old south quickly, but it is poisonous nowadays.
No matter how crooked, criminal or corrupt a black politician is, the majority of blacks still defend him. Blacks will only become politically mature when they are 1)willing to hold elected blacks accountable for their malfeasance, 2)willing to vote for a candidate without regard to race and 3)stop viewing politics as a racialist spoils system.
It sickens me whenever I hear blacks make excuses for a black politician who exudes corruption. A crook is a crook.

Lets correct that a little:
Obamba & Acorn forced the banks….
Detroit = the poster child of progressive ideology.
Honestly what did you people think they ultimately had in mind for you?`
Let’s not be too quick to scorn Americans for that ludicrous Detroit exhibition. Here in Vancouver, at the Annual General Meeting of a major credit union, a freshly-elected far-left Board member acted in exactly the same manner. (Or lack thereof, perhaps.)
Subsequently her husband, scarcely any better, was elected to the Vancouver City Council.
I fear the incoming Tides will drown us all.
@North of 50:
I respectfully beg to differ. The origins of the C.R.A. go all the way back to President Carter. It began in one postal zone in Chicago where it was noticed that there seemed to be a racial disparity in granting mortgages to applicants.
The banks were acting strictly according to business, of course. On average, black applicants were found to be less credit-worthy than whites. What was never pointed out, of course, was that Asians were found to be most credit-worthy of all.
Who rules in the “new world”? Why, professional whiners, of course! It is the way to progress. Sheesh. We’ve either gone insane or have elected insanity proponents to have free reign.
President Johnson brought in the Model Cities program, and it was implemented fully in Detroit. It is a model that many cities and governments have adopted. Many in Canada, except the new buzzword is sustainable development. Communism by another name. You can read the history of the effects of communism/socialism with race based politics in Detroit right here, you should save the article as it is a classic on how central planning is a failure and a disaster for the taxpayer. http://www.thedailycrux.com/content/3247/Government_Stupidity
I think that I remember a statement about “lunatics running the asylum.”
Reginald here is the factual history on the housing collapse, it originated under Carter and was expanded under Clinton, Bush tried to derail it but was blocked by the Democrat controlled Senate and House of Reps. Obama has dumped even more funds into it through Fannie and Freddie. http://sopebocks.blogspot.com/2008/10/sub-prime-crisis-was-created-by.html
Bring in the Fiscal Manager.
Detroit is a hair from their council getting overridden in order to get the house back in order.
Thanks union excess and union-whipped corps!
The only thing more impressive than the film is to drive the streets themselves. When you consider the formerly stately homes and the ornate designs in many of them you should only lament the downfall of what capitalism built and socialism destroyed. As you drive certain roads which cross jurisdictions you go from areas of slums to areas of comparitive prosperity. That alone should be enough to convince rational people that the government has a big impact on progress or regress. Unfortunately, as the second video demonstrates, irrationality rules the roost. I believe Conyers is gone from council (prison) but the equally lamentable John Conyers (her husband)is still in Congress. Conyers and John Dingel are the 2 longest serving members of Congress and both represent Detroit. The population of Detroit have only themselves to blame.
That city council Youtuber is misleading.
Back when Decore was Mayor of Aaaaaadmontin we had an elderly, moronic cretin of a councillor named Ed Ledger. The SOB wouldn’t shut up, he hogged meetings and was a gaseous bunghole that bullied and hectored and spoke out of turn.
Now Decore was a liberal, but in spite of that he was a good man and a fine leader. One day Ol’ Ed was beaking off and Decore called security in – and they threw the old bastid out! Even I came to my feet for a standing ovation.
The next meeting ol’ Ed is outgassing again. This time the security guards were mere steps away and they had tossed Ledger out before he could waste anyone’s time. Ed finally learned he could say his piece but then he had to shut the heck up!
Such silliness can be found in many city halls, methinks.
Reginald.. You could have expressed your point of view without being an A$$#o!e like the councilor in the clip.
Comments are all well and good, but beating around the bush doesn’t tell the true story. Sad but true, the city has gotten in the state it is in because of the cities legacy of the 1968 race riots. It is called white flight….not surprising, given the fact that 40-60% of residents receive some sort of state aid. Hmmmmm, I wonder if welfare recipients pay taxes? You know the kind that spread the wealth or someone’s fair share? Detroit will not get better until the rable is gone.

In Canada they find out where the people ran and expand the city to nab their tax dollars. I remember talking to someone from the former Fort Garry, Manitoba who said the last time they saw a snowplow was before their merger with Winnipeg.
Detroit is in serious need of a big dose of Bourbon Renewal.

That woman could lower the property values in a trailer park, and have the residents praying for a tornado.

We let people like that vote!
Sooner or later, if we are to survive as a culture/society worth living in, we are going to have to face this difficult problem:
Not everyone is equipped to have any say at all in how we conduct our public business. And, not everyone who deserves a say deserves an equal say.

Anyone else notice the similarities between Attawapiskat and Detroit. IMHO the common denominator is that the hated “Whitey” seems conspicuous by his absence as there is an obvious lack of adult supervision.
You have just seen an example of why some women get beat up.
I suspect, Abe, that John Conyers is relieved that his wife is in the Big House. Life at home will certainly be more peaceful.
South Africa and Zimbabwe were the same you can view the ruins of Johannesburg online as well. Europe hasn’t fared very well lately either. California is next in the US, and then one by one the dominoes fall.
The two-tiered justice system at work. In 1968 after the Detroit riots when it became obvious that the police and courts could or would not deal with the ‘victimized’ rioters, looters, muggers and arsonists the evil oppressive rich white people moved to Ann Arbor and Wayne County. In Caledonia a poor oppressed Indian (who by treaty does not pay taxes, if that’s oppression please oppress me!) gets less than three years for attempted murder that left a man with brain damage. How much does anyone want to bet that Chief Spence of Attawapiskat ends up being charged for corruption or even removed from office? Can the chief of an aboriginal tribe ever be removed from office?
There is another factor at play in Detroit.
Due to state laws that are overtly biased in the unions favour and high state taxes the big three have been building new auto plants in business friendly states such as Tennessee and Georgia for the past few decades. You may recall that the ‘New GM’ wanted to move their headquarters out of Detroit due to high taxes but were forbidden to do so by the Obama administration because it would deprive Detroit of jobs and tax revenue. Michigan has very high unemployment for unskilled labour so the young people who have no job and want to work are leaving. The unskilled who have no job and believe that others owe them a living stay and vote for whoever promises them the most benefits.
It makes me sad to see the beautiful houses and public buildings such as the train station and the opera in Detroit that have fallen to ruin. Many are art nouveau and art deco masterpieces conceived by the foremost architects and the finest craftsmen of their time. Detroit was considered one of the world’s greatest cities from the 1920s to 60s partly because of its architecture.
I hate socialists as much as anyone, and the city is obviously run by idiots but Detroit no longer has a reason to exist. 50 years ago there were hundreds of thousands of auto related jobs in Detroit, now there are none. They are like a mining town when the mine is gone. They should just roll up the place and return it to nature. This has happened to many cities. Buffalo, without the Erie canal, Rochester without Kodak, Wichita without Boeing. Sydney NS without coal and steel, Lunenburg without fishing and boat building, Eliot Lake without uranium. When a cities economic reason for being disappears, the city will to. We tend to not think about Detroit like this because it was once such a big place, but it is a one industry town that lost its industry.
