Reader Tips

Tonight, to help us usher in the new year, throngs of proud Brits at Royal Albert Hall and in London’s Hyde Park sing rousing versions of Jerusalem, God Save The Queen, and Auld Lang Syne.
What a combo.
A big thanks to Kate, the nonpareil, for another year of superb blogging, and for providing a forum for so many interesting characters – you know who you are, you commenters you.
Happy New Years, everybody! Here’s wishing you and your families a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2012.

  1. “Can you say ‘class warrior’? I knew you could! Well done!…”
Here are the lyrics to a sing-along song taught to third-graders at Woodbrook Elementary School in Charlottesville, Virginia:

    Some people have it all
But they still don’t think they have enough
    They want more money
    A faster ride
    They’re not content
Never satisfiedYes, they’re the 1 percent

I used to be one of the 1 percent
    I worked all the time
    Never saw my family
    Couldn’t make life rhyme
    Then the bubble burst
    It really, really hurt
    I lost my money
    Lost my pride
    Lost my home
Now I’m part of the 99

  2. What’s with Lisa Lafang? Tried watching a ‘conversation’ with the prime minister and couldn’t handle more than 5 minutes due to her badgering/attack/opining disguised as conversing. Can’t stand her or CTV.

  3. Though I’m still pretty much bedridden with the flu, I wanted to extend a shout-out to EBD, Kate, Mark, Ken, Paul, Marc, Bruce, ET, Louise, Soccermom, and everyone else for the great discussions throughout 2011. Compare the facts & insight found here on SDA and compare it with the “discussions” found on CBC, CTV, & Global. There’s no comparison and proof positive that SDA truly rocks!

  4. All the best in the new year Kate & fellow minions, and especially the contributors that so often hold the fort…
I hope you’re well enough soon Robert, slay the dragon!

  5. looks like the US is getting a head start on France this year…and they’re continuing tonight according to other reports…

Police, Firefighters Brace for Arson on New Year’s Eve
Los Angeles (CNN) — A joint task force Saturday was investigating a string of 35 fires across several Southern California communities, and one mayor called them a “new form of domestic terrorism.”
Despite a $60,000 reward, authorities had not made an arrest by Saturday afternoon.
The 21 initial fires, set in rapid succession in the Hollywood area, prompted authorities in California to post the reward in what they say is one of the worst arson sprees in recent memory.
The fires were set within a span of about five hours early Friday morning, and in nearly every case they were started on parked cars, officials said. Some of the fires spread to nearby buildings…
…West Hollywood Mayor John J. Duran told CNN the arsonists “are using cars as an incendiary device to set buildings on fire.” Many of the buildings are close to each other and house senior citizens who are not mobile, he said.

  6. All the best to you Kate and thanks for hosting such an interesting and informative blog. And for all the folks that host the site when Kate’s “On the Road Again”, thanks very much.
Happy New Year to all, at or on SDA and a special Get Well Soon to Robert in Vancouver.

  7. I’m passing this on because it worked for me today…
Dr Oz on TV said that to reach inner peace we should always finish things we
start, and we all could use more calm in our lives during the hectic Holiday season.

  9. this Dutch version of a burqa is well done however, but DEFINITELY nsfw…as are burquas themselves

  10. Thanks Robert. Get well soon.
I know how you feel, as last weekend with twenty-two in the house aged from seventeen months to almost seventy, there were at least three or four down with this gastrointestinal virus at any given time. I finally got nailed at about 3 am Sunday night Christmas day and still am not totally back to normal.
Good thing we had enough empty ice cream pails to go around. The clothes washer and dryer were operating every day.
EBD, that was enjoyable. It brought some tears to my eyes.
    old duffer, amen to that.
Now it is time to get out the wine, a little sea food, some crackers and snuggle up with the Frau and bring in the new year.
    Happy New Year to all.

  11. Robert.. They say the West Coast flu is pretty bad this year. Hope you don’t have that strain.. Snagglepuss .. Hilarious.. Got some unfinished projects here.. Might try yorr solution.. Happier 2012 Kate and all.

  12. Happy New Year to all, and, especially Obama, welcome to your last year of your destructive presidency.

  13. Thank you Kate, and all contributors, and a Happy New Year too you all. Thank you for my daily dose of truth.
    Audj

  14. Thanks Kate and guests. Happy New Year all.
(I am surprised that the land of “the Boy” still allows this sort of blatantly nationalistic display by such a monochromatic audience.)

  15. EU freezing. Not AGW.
Frozen credit: “banks had frozen about $US1 billion ($A989.32 million) in uncommitted credit lines deemed “critical” to maintain its operations.”
    …-
“Petroplus to shut down three refineries”
“The Swiss firm will suspend operations at its Petit Couronne refinery in northern France, Cressier in the Swiss canton of Neuchatel and its Antwerp site in Belgium.
The action followed Tuesday’s announcement that banks had frozen about $US1 billion ($A989.32 million) in uncommitted credit lines deemed “critical” to maintain its operations.
“The company will start temporary economic shutdowns of the Petit Couronne, Antwerp and Cressier refineries in January 2012 given limited credit availability and the economic climate in Europe,” Petroplus said in a statement on Friday.
The firm, Europe’s largest independent oil refiner, said it held meetings with lenders in Zurich on Thursday, describing the talks as “open and constructive.”
Further negotiations will take place in the coming days as the company seeks to get the credit restored.
“The restart of the refineries is dependent on economic conditions and credit availability,” Petroplus said.”

  16. I did not see one black person in the Albert Hall and not even one in the free crowd in Hyde Park. Very disappointing.
Other than that observation, Happy New Year everyone.

  17. “The Santa Killer Was a Religion of Peacer”
    “Townhall.com ^ | January 1, 2012 | Doug Giles”
“If I wanted to murder my family or destroy a historic university and yet not give my faith a bad name in the press, I would convert to the Religion of Peace.
Yep, if you belong to that lovely creed, you can snap on Christmas and execute your entire clan or burn down a famous college, and the media won’t say shizzle about your faith or your motivation for mayhem. Sa-weet, eh, mass murderers?
Case in point. Aziz Yazdanpanah, known only as the “Santa Killer,” was a follower of this “amazing faith” who slaughtered his family on Christmas Day after his wife dumped him and his 19-year-old daughter wouldn’t stop dating a non-Religion of Peacer. The adherents of said faith refer to this act as an “honor killing,” and when it occurs police and the press reckon it unworthy of unearthing and condemning publicly.
For those not familiar with the term “honor killing,” allow me to explain: An honor killing is a murder wherein a man from the Creed of Calm can give his wife and/or daughter(s) the axe if he deems that they have embarrassed him or their peaceful community. Step lightly, lasses.
Oh, and I nearly forgot this. It’s not only okay to kill the ladies, according to their doctrine, if they make the faithful self-conscious, but adherents may also slay flaming gays who sully the Cult of Tranquility’s public image. I’m guessing Adam Lambert will not be converting anytime soon.
So, how did the truth revealing journalists report this Christmas Day carnage enacted by a male member of the Peace People? Here’s how: They called Aziz the “Santa Killer” who was down on his financial and relational luck whom his neighbors regarded as a decent gent who loved his family and liked to do yard work.
In others words, he was a Mr. Rogers with a tan who had a bad day. And haven’t we all had a bad day? Of course we have, and that’s why Daniel Powter wrote his now famous song.”

  18. Social housing for dregs:
This weeks local rag has a bit about a crackhead evicted last winter from next door.He had been arrested three times in handcuffs in the two years he lived there.
This recent story was about his sentencing to six months, less time served, for choking his live-in with a bat. Lovely.

  19. To Kate, EBD, and all of SDA’s guest bloggers, regulars, readers, and commenters:
    HAPPY NEW YEAR!
With a CPC majority moving on it’s mandate, SNN, and all the great “conservative” (aka common sense) blogs — with SDA one of the ones topping the list — 2012’s shaping up to be a very good year.

  20. well, surprise…surprise
(JPost) — Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood will not recognize Israel “under any circumstance,” the party’s deputy leader Dr Rashad Bayoumi told Arabic daily al-Hayat in an interview publish Sunday.
In recent Egyptian elections the party list led by the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) won 36.3 percent of the list vote, while the ultra-conservative Salafi al-Nour Party took 28.8%.
When asked whether it is a requirement for the government in Egypt to recognize Israel, Bayoumi responded by saying: “This is not an option, whatever the circumstances, we do not recognize Israel at all. Its [Israel] an occupying criminal enemy.”
The deputy leader stressed during the interview that no Muslim Brotherhood members would ever meet with Israelis for negotiations. “I will not allow myself to sit down with criminals.”
Bayoumi went on to say that The Muslim Brotherhood would take legal procedures towards cancelling the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel that was signed in 1979. “The Brotherhood respects international conventions, but we will take legal action against the peace treaty with the Zionist entity,” he told the paper.

  21. and an even bigger surprise….
CAIRO (AP) — An ultraconservative Egyptian Islamist group says sending Christmas greetings to Christians is “against our beliefs,” a position immediately rebuked by other Muslims.
Nadar Bakar, spokesman of the hard-line Al-Nour party, said Wednesday that Muslims should give greetings to Christians only on “personal occasions,” not religious ones.
Al-Nour represents the ultraconservative Salafi movement, which wants to strictly impose Islamic law in Egypt. Al-Nour has won a surprisingly strong 20 percent of the vote so far in Egypt’s staggered parliamentary elections.
The remarks prompted Egypt’s Al Azhar, the most eminent religious institution, to issue a religious edict approving Christmas greetings. The country’s most influential Islamist group, the Muslim Brotherhood, responded by sending “its best Christmas wishes to our brotherly Christians and Muslims as well.”

  22. this is how a civilization ends, not with a bang but the rap of a judge’s gavel…
We’ve all heard about crazy lawsuits and 2011 was no exception when it came to the filing of frivolous – even ridiculous – lawsuits.
A lawsuit by a kidnapper against his victims for not helping him evade police tops the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Legal Reform’s (ILR) survey of the Top Ten Most Ridiculous Lawsuits of 2011, released today.
“While these lawsuits vary from the outrageous to the humorous, abusive litigation is hardly a laughing matter,” said ILR President Lisa Rickard. “ILR’s annual poll of ridiculous lawsuits helps to remind us that abusive lawsuits affect real people and real businesses, and can have harmful results to lives, jobs, and even our economic growth.”
ILR announced the top ten vote-getters from among those chosen throughout the year by visitors to the FacesOfLawsuitAbuse.org website. The lawsuits were selected from those featured in the website’s monthly polls for 2011. The Faces of Lawsuit Abuse campaign is ILR’s public awareness effort created to highlight the impact of abusive lawsuits on small businesses, communities, and individuals.
The top ten Most Ridiculous Lawsuits of 2011 are:
•Convict sues couple he kidnapped for not helping him evade police
•Man illegally brings gun into bar, gets injured in a fight, then sues bar for not searching him for a weapon
•Young adults sue mother for sending cards without gifts and playing favorites
•Woman disagrees with store over 80-cent refund, sues for $5 million
•Mom files suit against exclusive preschool over child’s college prospects
•Man suing for age discrimination says judge in his case is too old
•Obese man sues burger joint over tight squeeze in booths
•Woman sues over movie trailer; says not enough driving in “Drive”
•Passenger’s lawsuit says cruise ship went too fast and swayed from side to side
•Mother sues Chuck E. Cheese – says games encourage gambling in children
Links to the full news stories from which these were drawn and the complete results of the poll can be found on the Faces of Lawsuit Abuse web site.

  23. This may be interesting to some. My computer crashed a month or so ago,and I lost an important letter from the cbc. Fortunately,I had posted a copy of it here. I went through ‘google’ and found it,but then thought I would search to see my earliest post on this site.It appears that it was back in at least May 2006.
I found posts from earlier on the ‘Shotgun’ site, and I also noticed names on both sites that are very familiar, and still here today.
This place is really a wonderful place to visit for info and laughs. With that a hearty ‘Happy New Year’shout-out to Kate and everyone else.

  24. Happy New Year to Kate and all the regulars from Nicaragua. It’s 84 degrees, and there is a nice stiff breeze off the lake. You know I’d rather be shoveling snow in Alberta, but I’ll manage to tough it out somehow for a few more days.

  25. HAPPY NEW YEAR to Kate and all the commenters here over the past year. Here’s to 2012 and to the 25M, it wont be long. Continued success both here and on the road Kate.
