Words and The State: 2011 Edition

Early last November, during a heated discussion with her fellow passengers on a crowded Wimbledon to Croydon tram, a grumpy and stressed 34-year-old former dental receptionist named Emma West proffered up some rather un-PC opinions about immigration and what she saw as the loss of Britain’s identity. The single mother of two remained in her seat throughout, and issued no physical or verbal threats, but she complained – profanely – that Britain’s identity has been lost due to excessive immigration (she singled out Poles, Nicaraguans, and “blacks”), and opined that these people should go back and “sort out (their) own countries.”
She would soon pay a massive price for her expressions. At the time of the incident British Transport officers merely escorted her off the tram and waited with her for the next one, but when one of her fellow passengers posted a cellphone video (language warning) a few weeks later, a nationwide womanhunt commenced – even the leader of Britain’s opposition Labour Party got in on the act, issuing an “important appeal” to track her down – and on November 29th West was arrested and charged with racially-aggravated harassment. Denied bail over fears of revenge attacks after her home address was circulated online, the distraught West was sent to a category A prison (“the highest security prison in England…for ‘prisoners…whose escape would be highly dangerous to the public or national security’) and her children were taken away from her by social services.
Now infamous, West would become an entirely unwitting lightning rod for inflamed passions on both sides of the immigration debate. British journalist and CNN host Piers Morgan tweeted that she should be deported, scores of “anti-racist” online commenters called for her to be beaten and/or raped, and multiple death threats were issued. On the other side, anti-immigration proponents and white nationalists of all stripes appropriated her name and image, and practically deified her for her anxious outburst.
Tough gig for a single working-class mum with a history of severe depression.
One week after Emma West was arrested and jailed, four Somali-born Muslim women who had brutally assaulted a passer-by, kicking her bloody and unconscious while shouting “kill the white slag!” and “white b****!”, walked free from court. Unlike Emma West, they had not been charged with any race-related offences.

  1. Vancouver/Burnaby/Surrey already here on the SkyTrain, somedays, no one speaks English anymore, and it doesn’t matter anyway, everyone has some thing in their ears or are texting or playing video games or telling their other to meet them at the station, etc.

  2. HELP. What sda commenter said this recently?:
Damn Godwin’s Law — the Nazis are here.
(dwright?) Can the archives me searched for a phrase?
Anyway, all praise to whomever it was. I can’t get it out of my mind. In fact, I’ve come to feel that the purpose of Godwin’s Law was to re-inforce PC; to intimidate keen observers from pointing out certain historical analogues.
I wish I found this story shocking but I don’t.
The only way to interpret this is that the elites are afraid that the Eurabia project might fail were ordinary people permitted to express opinions like this.

  3. Isn’t racism a wonderful thing?. Here we have a prime example of where blacks from Somalia are considered incapable of functioning in other than a blood thirsty way in society and are excused because of their race and culture and at the same time, in the same country a woman is jailed and has her children taken away and is subjected to public harassment and death threats because she spoke her “thoughts” publicly.
The white should have known better because she was white and the blacks were excused because they were black.
It sounds crazy and I’m not sure it really happened, but assuming for the sake of conversation that it did, it’s flat out racism. Am I missing something here or is it politically incorrect to even comment? I see nothing. Move along here. Is that the appropriate response?

  4. This woman, Emma West has a right to her opinion but to be so abusive and aggressive when she has her child with her, is plain stupid as she endangered the child. However, I saw the video of the Somali girls attacking the white gal and, would suggest that under present day hate laws as they apply in Canada (rightfully or not) they should have been charged with assault to begin with, never mind the racial taunts.

  5. After the Vancouver airport pickup, me, my two daughters and one of their husbands went to a highly recommended Chinese restaurant in Richmond.
We were the only whites in the very large room.
With no intention of engaging in political discussion, I casually mentioned that looking around it wasn’t hard to see why so many Richmondites moved into the interior (e.g. Okanagan).
WOW, the 2-3 minutes of dead silence really shocked me. I therefore felt it best not to discus the lack of cultural common ground between us and the rest of the diners. I had broken a powerful TABOO.

  6. I’ve heard more than a few Chinese people say that they thing they hate most about Richmond is there are too many Chinese there.

  7. Me No Dhimmi…too bad about those racists you were sitting with in the restaurant.
I claim the true racists are the ones that ‘pretend’ they don’t see any difference.

  8. I claim the true racists are the ones that ‘pretend’ they don’t see any difference.
Bluetech, so how would you call the people who see the difference but don’t talk about it and don’t want to hear about it? How are they better from these other people?

  9. This is a un-declared civil war and it will only escalate. It’s outcome will decide if the concept of “British Liberty” will be survive on British soil.
Or perhaps, just in some obscure Human Rights Museum in one of her colonies?
We’ll take as many loyal British refugees as we can get. The regions of Canada have a generation to go before they’ll be in the same situation. The big three cities are already there.

  10. Have we in the West ever gone down the wrong road: We have more bullying than ever before, only instead of deploring it, we’ve sanctioned it if the bullying and racist comments are made by someone who’s part of a visible minority.
If you simply make an observation about someone or some situation with even a hint of racial content — unless, of course, you’re talking about whites — you’re branded a racist or told “you can’t say that.”
Walking down a Toronto street yesterday, I, along with a number of other pedestrians, declined to give a Native panhandler some spare change. He muttered something under his breath, which I couldn’t make out, and then said very clearly, “that was racist but I’m allowed.”
We’ve turned everything inside out and upside down. And all I can say is, God help us, because we’ve made such a mess of things, it seems to me He’s the only one who can. Spiritual intervention is the only thing that can save us, because we’ve empowered the bullies and disarmed the rest of us, all in the name of “equality.”
    Sheer madness.

  11. “This is a un-declared civil war and it will only escalate. It’s outcome will decide if the concept of “British Liberty” will be survive on British soil.”
British liberty (if there ever was such a thing) is lost already. The United Kingdom is dead. Long live the Kingdom!

  12. Emma West was released on Bail on the 16th of December (apparently there was quite a hue and cry raised about her being in jail over Christmas) and has to appear in court on the 3rd of Jan. The whereabouts of her son, I don’t know.
    Pat

  13. Me No Dhimmi:
Yes that has me (and thank you for remembering)
Now I have seen that video and one thing I’ve noticed is it doesn’t start until AFTER the f’ing immigrants have ALREADY ANTAGONIZED AND HARASSED HER !!!!!!!!!!!!
But the white person gets jailed!!!!!!!
I hear that Toronto is just as bad. To the point that a store owner is not allowed to defend his property because he’s not the right color of Muslim.
Call me a racist, please—-it will give me more time to load my rifle………..

  14. There’s absolutely no evidence on the tape to suggest that that’s true, dwright (10:57). It certainly seems to be the case that the online video starts in the middle of some sort of ongoing discussion, but we can only guess as to the larger context in which her remarks were made.
The issue in any case isn’t whether she was responding to someone else, or not, or whether she was rude or not – she was rude – but whether or not she should have been be *arrested* for voicing an opinion, sans threats, that millions of her fellow countrymen hold, as evidenced by the comments below other stories in online newspapers like The Sun.

  15. Don’t shout too loud it’s Just the same here when an Indian gets a greatly reduced sentence after beating a man half to death with a 2×4 at Caledonia.

  16. I am not usually one to use profanity on line, but, really, this episode is just f***ing disgusting. A poor single mom, probably half in the bag, made a few inappropriate comments on a bus. For that she is subjected to a national womanhunt by a completely demented state, and an online assault by howling morons. And “Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition” leader Miliband is nothing other than a self-righteous scumbag.
I am a third generation Canadian of British descent. I know we have been reading for a number of years about how Britain is being dissolved in political correctness. But this is a whole new level of depression for me.

  17. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
    –Reinhold Niebuhr
Beating on a hornet’s nest with a stick isn’t very effective and will likely cause more discomfort to you than to the hornets.

  18. EBD I have to call BS on you.
She was obviously agitated when the vid started, we’re talking about a single mom trying to get home to her kids.
    She didn’t pick that fight.

  19. North of 60
You’re right in a way, but if you have legal access to certain chemicals, the hornets drop like flies.
Or if you’re me you have enough public experience to shut them up with a single look.
Being 6’0″ and 190 lbs of trained MMA fighter helps, my bearing and attitude shuts down and shuts up cowards every time.
    Pack animal bullies………

  20. I bet Piers Morgan was disappointed that he couldn’t personally kick the poor single mother having to settle for on air attacks. Does anyone else think this guy is a total A hole? I am not sure what CNN was looking for but I guess they got it.

  21. Uh, MND, your own reporting of your comments makes you sound like you offended people, as if Richmondites should flee the Chinese…a rather inept moment.

  22. ScarL “Does anyone else think this guy is a total A hole?”
I do. He is a disappointing choice.

  23. Dwright (12:10), I was specifically responding to this statement:

“One thing I’ve noticed is it doesn’t start until AFTER the…immigrants have already antagonized and harassed her!!!”

I was just pointing out that, inasmuch as the very first words in the video are Emma West’s, no one can “notice” what happened before that.
The way she’s been treated is shameful regardless of whether or not she was responding to a verbal provocation.
Felis (11:29 P.M): I have *exactly* the same feeling about it.

  24. Can’t see the video as youtube wants me to log on first. Yet another example of censorship?
The similar example that we have in Canada is the treatment of Ernst Zundel. For merely questioning historical dogma he spent over 2 years in solitary confinement. He did way more time than the Native Indian who stole some gasoline and claims he didn’t notice the gas station attendant attached to the bottom of his vehicle after he drove over him. Of course, instead of the appropriate punishment of dragging the Indian behind a vehicle for 10-20 miles we have an idiotic policy in BC where we have to pay for gasoline first before filling up. It pisses me off to line up at the gas station, pay in cash and then go back to get my change.
I figure if you can’t beat them, join them. As of the new year I’ll come out in public as a muslim transvestite dressed in a burka with full face covering and make as outrageous statements as I can under the protection of political correctness. I guess there’s the risk of being labeled an apostate when I get tired of the gag. Of course, I may also reconsider this tomorrow morning by which time I’ll be sober again.

  25. Loki, try this one or this one.
If you’re still asked to sign in, I think it’s just to verify that you’re over 18, because of the curse-y language.

  26. Btw, Loki, British authorities did ask YouTube to remove the video(s) of the incident, but, to their credit, they didn’t.

  27. “British journalist and CNN host Piers Morgan tweeted that she should be deported,”
Piers Morgan should be………he has always been a lefty ass……I think he b**** Chris Mathews….
“On the other side, anti-immigration proponents and white nationalists appropriated her image, and almost bizarrely deified her.”
    Yeah that’s reasonable……

  28. There is only ONE group enabling this ACROSS THE WORLD. And there is only ONE solution. Dead. Pigs. Or do you REALLY think that it is the politicians who will come to your doorstep to beat, Taser, and shoot you into submission?

  29. Scar:”Does anyone else think this guy is a total A hole? I am not sure what CNN was looking for but I guess they got it.”
CNN was looking for a qualified phone hacker…

  30. @dwright “Call me a racist, please. It will give me more time to load my rifle.”
    Oooooh. I *LIKE* that.
Kate, do I sense a new series coming so titled in 2012? You know, that is unless Kathy steals it first. 😉

  31. Oooooh, you seem like the sort of person who would be ineffectually *thrilled* by every little provocation.
It’s an attribute that tends to go hand in hand with a lack of awareness about who, specifically, is giving you the post.

  32. typical white underclass trash. Quite right to take away the child. Read essays by Theodore Dalrympole on these people.

  33. C’mon, EBD. You don’t know me. Just thought it was catchy. Don’t look too deep, that’s all I meant by it.
(And if I sinfully enjoy a little provocation now and then, it’s because I feel I’ve earned it.)
    Happy new year.

  34. Nice video. I’d -really- like to have seen what went on before she started in raving, because what we have right now is like a snippet of the Scottish punk on the train getting the bum’s rush, but without the previous five minutes of swearing at the conductor.
I would venture that the main problem on display in this video is not racism. Its
    A)public drunkenness
    B)public cowardice.
This raving woman is clearly drunk off her @ss, which accounts for her unacceptable behavior. However the rest of these noble citizens are too wuss to tell her the shut the hell up.
The appropriate response to a drunk raging racist imprecations on a subway is for someone of the offended race to go slap the drunk upside the head, tell them “SHUT IT, Beeatch!”, and then turf the drunk off the train. A nice stocky Polish grandmother would be perfect.
However as we know, in Britain that would get even a Muslim jail time. So they film her instead, and millions of pounds Sterling will be spent to prosecute her FOR TALKING. Which is dangerously insane from a law and order standpoint.
An even-handed (and common sense!) application of the law from the government side and some willingness to personally stick up for social norms on the public side would go a long way toward stopping Britain’s accelerating slide into barbarism.
New York City is the model for this type of action, its called Broken Window policing. Good Samaritans and property owners are left alone, while punks, gang bangers and drug dealers are busted for littering, noise, petty larceny, whatever’s available. Do that for six months and even Brownsville in Brooklyn is safe to walk around in.
Happened in NYC, could easily happen in London. How to make it happen is just make a list of all the a-holes in government who are resisting it, and DEFEAT them. Shazam, no more crime.
OTOH, elect another liberal ponce like Mayor Bloomberg and it comes BACK. Not safe to walk around in Brownsville these days they tell me.

  35. Phantom: “Happened in NYC, could easily happen in London.”
I’m not so sure. NYC had Rudy Guiliani who was willing to kick ass to get the thugs apprehended and arrested, the idea being that if you enforce the law for petty crime by the small fry, they’ll lead you to the big guys. That happened. I’ve often felt safer walking in NYC than in downtown Toronto.
Who, in London, is willing to enforce their laws? ‘Seems to me the problem is, that too many of the small fry are visible minority types who are regularly handed a “Get out of jail free” card, just like here in Canada. Our law enforcement officers (sic) don’t like to rile Native Canadians or other visible minorities even when they’ve broken our laws, so they’re all too often given a pass or a ridiculously light sentence. Two-tier law enforcement never works and the ensuing chaos in our big cities is proof.
    Kyrie eleison.

  36. I watched this video and the wonam was rude, obnoxious and ignorant but there was nothing in her outburst that could be considered criminal in any reading of the British commonlaw, however statute law these days is written by psychopathic socialist cheese diks on a power trip. Brotons are living in the clockwork orange.
The incident serves to remind us of what a politicized gulag state socialists will construct for us if we don’t constantly disempower them by smacking down their fascist reflex.

  37. So this is what my family left their blood on some god forsaken french beach over 60 years ago for?
I think next time we let the Nazis have them…

  38. Phantom nails is:
” An even-handed (and common sense!) application of the law from the government side and some willingness to personally stick up for social norms on the public side would go a long way toward stopping Britain’s accelerating slide into barbarism.

It may be hard to remember, but at one time, there was a common agreement that disturbing the peace was bad, and that all people, including small children were expected to maintain self-control. That social pressure meant very few people would transgress very far, and never to the level we commonly see today. All this was lost when those in authority tolerated the anti-social behavior of the hippies and the self-righteous clowns shaking their fists at the world for injustices they felt society had visited upon them.
Liberal ponce describes Bloomberg in a nutshell. You’ll never see anything half as descriptive in the PC media – even the NY Post.

  39. I wish there was some way to offer support to this woman. She has been unfairly targeted and victimized by a system that is so huge, there is no realistic means of effective resistance. Is there a fund? Is there a petition? I wish there was a way to turn the whole juggernaut upon itself. To use all this power against this lady for such an unworthy purpose chills me absolutely.
