  1. There’s not enough flags on the planet to lower one for every korean who died of malnutrition/poverty while this crazy bastard pursued his nuclear program.

  2. now for the regime of Kim Il-Dumb. havent seen any public figure look this thick since BabyDoc Duvulier.

“Kim Il-Dumb. havent seen any public figure look this thick since BabyDoc Duvulier.”
I’ve called him Kim Il Dork since before he took the throne. I suspect the army likes the Kim family precisely because they are so stupid. If they actually had an independent thought they would be gone.

  4. would have called him Kim-il Duh . but that is reserved for Calgary alderman Duh Farrell.
looks like when he dived in the gene pool he hit his head on bottom , even in the deep end.

  5. It’s like belonging to an organization that commits horrible acts. You are judged by association.
    Quit the UN NOW!!!

  6. I wonder if they did the same for Gaddafi. No? How ’bout old buddy Saddam? It just underlines the pukes they are. Just waiting to see what they do for all the other tyrants on the edge.

  7. It is extremely difficult to say anything, because of anger generated by the sight of the flag “honouring” the bizarre north Korean communist.
This idiotic organization is misnamed. It is now some years ago, that it has become something else, other than United Nations. Today those united nations are mostly despotic, totalitarian dictatorships that have very little to do with civilised society.
How can Europe and North America support this kind of depravity is a serious question. Think whatever you want, these two regions are pinnacle of civilisation, superior to anything that is known to have existed up to present time.
It is also true that it is sinking with increasing intensity into the cesspool of garbage that the rest of this earth unintentionally supports.

  8. This isn’t my grandfather’s UN that voted to go to war with this demon’s father.
The Kims keep getting fatter, uglier, stupider, and more cowardly.

  9. “they had to”,
Give me a f***ing break! The UN flew the flag at half-mast for THAT sonofabi**h!!!?
The whole organization is just a respectable facade for a bunch of third world tyrants, murderers, and gangsters.
I didn’t advocate dropping out of the UN before, but that’s the last straw!
Mr.Harper, walk out of that organization. I’d rather Canada was a “rogue” State than associate with the corrupt thieves that make up most of the UN.

  10. I’m guessing all the bare flagpoles are those of the nations that chose not to fly their flags at all this week rather than honour Kim.

  11. In my opinion all democratic countries are fools for supporting this, we should all remove support from this insane puppet organization of the corrupt and brutal countries of the world, Then it could be called the United Nuts.

  12. How can the UN hit a new low when they are already at the bottom ? The wole thing is a repository for mental patients and professional busybodies. The world equivelant of the CHRC. Get them the hell out of New York and turn the building into apartments, although it could take years to get the stink out of it.

Bang-on, that. And Dennis K @ 11:12p has it right, too: we should cease membership in this worthless org until sanity returns to its leadership, if ever.

  14. The difference between Havel’s death and the Dear Leader is that Havel was a former national leader and Jong Il was the current leader of his country at the time of his death. Protocol requires a flag half masted for current leaders but not for former leaders. The problem here is not with protocol but with the structure of the UN itself. All member nations are considered equal in stature and legitimacy. This is why we’ve seen repeated instances of rogue states being named UN heads of humanitarian committees, disarmament committees, anti-racism groups, etc. We gain very little by venting outrage as, technically, the UN is correctly following established protocol. So, as protocol stems from organizational structure, the solution would appear to be structural adjustment to the UN to account for varying degrees of democratic legitimacy (etc.). …but don’t hold your breath for it.

“We gain very little by venting outrage as, technically, the UN is correctly following established protocol”
If enough people vent outrage perhaps these dim whitted stoolies will be forced to change protocol or forced to leave. I prefer the latter.

  16. So there is honour among thieves.
I guess Fidel is next to get the ‘honour’ or maybe his buddy Nelson Mandela or Hugo Chavez.
I say we stay in the U.N. for now just to have the right to speak there and a vote there.
But we don’t pay a penny more in dues than the mean average of what places like Cuba or North Korea or Venezuela or the Palistinians pay and our troops stop wearing the Blue Helmets and only fight under our own colours for Canada’s direct interest.

  17. The UN is even more pathetic than the old League of Nations. We all know how that turned out.
It gets more corrupt by the year. Hard to imagine at one time they even had any respect. Move it to Iraq.

  18. For those inclined to tell the UN how disgusting their half-staff mourning for Kim Jong-Il is, they have a Contact Us form page at http://www.un.org/en/contactus/
You only get 200 characters, so you need to get to the point. I said, “Shameful, the UN flying it’s flag at half-staff, mourning Kim Jong-Il. Had the UN any decency, you’d be mourning the millions of North Koreans murdered, starved to death under the Kim dynasty.”

  19. Oh, gross. Do they celebrate Hitler’s birthday with cakes and little paper hats and champers? Honestly, they might as well.

No need to send it all the way to NK. Just relocate the building 150 meters to the east of where it sits now.

  21. By the way – has anyone noticed that while North Koreans are starving to death, Sonny Boy (aka the new leader) looks like he never missed a meal or snack in his life?

  22. I’m confused at the reaction – what did you expect from an organization with China as a permanent member of the security council?
AAMOF what do we ever expect from an organization consisting primarily of Communist/Marxist/statist socialist dictatorships and Juntas with Russia and China leading them on the security council?
What is it the greedy stupid commie world has wanted since day one? – the west’s wealth and their military subordination. I have seen NOTHING the UN had done that hasn’t furthered that goal.

  23. To be consistent, shouldn’t the U.N. dropped the flag to half mast when Saddam and Muammar were executed? Was it their fault they were forcefully removed by foreign powers? Would that have been a “Bridge Too Far”?

  24. The CBC & CTV have been playing carefully constructed memorial stories every day since his death. With long sad faces they talk about his hobbies, influence, and the hordes of grieving masses.
Not once will they air any of the well documented atrocities you can find online.

  25. If the UN was a truly respectable organization they would have shoved that flagpole up his wazoo years ago.

  26. Before we write off young Kim whose barber must have been eliminated in the last purge I think we will have to wait a year or two. At this point I don’t think he has the strength or legitimacy to make any changes, but as he establishes power we should get signals as to which direction he is leaning. He has had more intimate contact with the west than his father and may have different ideas as well as ideals but must move slowly and carefully as the old guard is very powerful. He may well be like the old man or even worse but there is no way of judging him at this point. A year or two is in order to find out. Possibly a lot less time if he is like his father and has to prove he has the same iron grip and mindset. Just no way of knowing until he makes the first move.

  27. The important thing to remember about the UN is that it’s the United Nations.
It’s about nations qua nations, serving the (perceived) interests of themselves, as nations.
It’s not about “the people” of any of them, for all the blather about “Human Rights”, used only as a tool to serve the aforesaid local national interests, as clubs against their enemies.
New low? Nothing new about it, for anyone that’s been paying attention since 1950 – when the only reason the UN sided with the South in the Korean War was that the Soviets were gone that day.

“Before we write off young Kim……I think we will have to wait a year or two.”
I think most people don’t grasp what North Korea is all about clearly.
I understand peterj that you are not a lefty or a troll, but in reality only the left could be delusional enough to “hope” that this fat little nobody will “change” such a regime and indeed culture for no other reason that it’s some new guy stepping into the dictator’s shoes.
Half of these loons also believe that if only we freely handed out Canadian passports and set up a Tim Horton’s in Pyongyang they’ll love us and treat each other with dignity and respect.

  29. @ Knight 99
You are probably right and my hopes are not very high, but unlike his father he did spend some time in Europe and his outlook on what works and what doesn’t may be different. Not overly optimistic but I still feel we can’t be sure until he sends out the first signals. The track record of his family history is rather dismal but he is the first to have associated with western culture in person rather than movies and porn like his old man. I’ll hold out for that slim sliver of hope before I acknowledge you were right and “what was I thinking”. I sure as hell would’nt lay any money on my train of thought, but what the hell…….like buying a lottery ticket. One can dream 🙂

  30. peterj >
    Agreed, and understand.
As far as spending time in Europe as I have read other SDA commenter’s mention – so did Osama Bin Laden, the Fort Hood shooter, PM Harpers 17 beheading conspirators, etcetera, etcetera, it holds no water and is simply another lefty pipe dream. “If they just moved in next door they’ll be just like us in a matter of time”.
