  1. If these figures are correct, and I dare say they ARE, how is Chief Spence going to rationalize spending far more per capita on salaries than towns twice their size, towns that actually deliver services to their citizens?
    Circle the wagons,Chief.

  2. Oh great..now the UN is scolding Canada over this! See G&M.

Just means where on the right trail.

  3. I see the UN is sticking its nose in to “monitor” the way the feds handle his native industry FUBAR. The announcement seemed little more than a self promoting sound bite to remind everyone the UN is the moral paragon of the era(Kosovo, Somalia and Bangladesg excepted)
I don’t think the UN will actually do anything there for the people as they have none of their own money, and what they get they spend on lush confabs – their entire existence seems to be to tongue lash western governments who are not yet fully global soviets, about their presumed human rights abuses. Funny they don’t seem alarmed by China cutting up dissidents and selling the organs or Islamic misogyny. But Canada seems to really bug them – ever since we exercised sovereignty in foreign policy and told the UN Soviets to pound sand.

  4. And I didn’t pay attention to which exactly but the Canadian Red Cross or the International Red Cross is also there.

  5. Canadian Red Cross will be there (or anywhere else in Canada) when there is a declared shelter need – Shelter management is their primary mandate in Canada (contracted).

  6. Silliest headline ever. You people aren’t even reading the article. Would you work for $7k a year as mayor of anything? Granted, there’s a shitpile of waste and corruption going on in Attiwapiskat, but it’s also going on in Sudbury, Timmins, and Ottawa. The race card gets played because that’s all they’ve got.

  7. Well FrankhogIII now that you mention it there are lots of people who would be mayor of a small town for $7k per annum. Its not that being mayor of said small town is a full time job. My nephew is mayor of a town of a thousand people. His full time job is mechanic at a local car dealership. He gets paid per meeting and travel if he has to attend a conference or the like.

  8. One could argue – weakly – in the above examples that apples are being compared to oranges. An apple to apple comparison exists in Ontario, on the Trans-Canada; Longlac and Long Lake First Nation. The towns are a mile or so apart, yet one town appears to enjoy a high household income while the other town has a penchant for removing the wooden steps that lead to their front doors.
Anyone have a theory for that?

  9. I guess Bob Rae won’t be acknowledging this article anytime soon. After all, it contradicts his political stand on this issue and takes the wind out of his sails. F**k him!

  10. Another obvious difference about the average Canadian northern town and the average reserve is that a substantial larger percentage are gainfully employed

  11. Good article from the Fraser Institute but what they fail to mention is that there is no income tax on reserves. Thus the $51,803/year salary of the chief would likely be equivalent to about $100,000/year off the reserve (any SDA accountant readers can correct me on what the proper equivalent would be for an employee with no significant deductions). I also suspect that the $7700/year part-time mayor of Atikokan is far more productive than the overpaid chief.
I could care SFA if I get called a racist for suggesting that perhaps the simplest way of dealing with the problem in Attawapiskat is to simply cut off the funding to the totally incompetent “leadership” and instead hire non-Indian’s to manage the reserve. The primary project would be to move people out of the reserve into larger centers leaving the reserve for those Indians who choose to live in primitive fashion off the land. That would mean bows and arrows and stone tipped spears for those who chose to stay.
It would be cheaper to have the majority of the reserve residents on welfare in a larger city and a few of them would likely learn what is necessary to be successful in Canadian society. I’ve mentioned before that there’s no congenital lack of intelligence among Native Indians to prevent them from functioning in Canadian society and the primary reason they don’t is because they’re well paid to live in squalor.

  12. Ah the good old un coming to the rescue. The only time it’s of any use is when it’s surrounded by the c and the t.

  13. 85M income and 100 working for DeBeers all tax free. Where is all the money? Someone has a big bank account somewhere.

  14. Check out any chiefs, and his close families houses and vehicles/toys, yea only a liberal is stupid enough to stand on TV blaming anyone but themselves for this mess. The chief on a certain reserve here in AB has 2 track hoes, 1 scraper 2 cats etc, and those are just his toys. Stupid Bob Rae, what a dolton.
