From the Montreal Gazette, the only part that matters;
“The Conservatives believe in setting the Western farmers free,” said Manitoba Conservative Senator Don Plett. “It’s a great day for Western Canada.”
Shortly after the vote, Gov. Gen. David Johnston gave the bill royal assent. […]
With royal assent and then the government immediately proclaiming the bill, it means the farmer-elected directors of the CWB are out of their jobs and farmers can begin forward contracting their grain sales with whatever grain company they wish. The actual monopoly won’t be lifted until August 2012.
Update: A statement(pdf) from the Grain Growers of Canada, whose news releases generally manage to evade detection by Wheat Board friendly media.
More: Another CBC poll….
UPDATE (CBC): The Canadian Wheat Board announced Friday that its remaining directors met and have decided to discontinue legal challenges to the legislation ending the board’s monopoly on marketing the wheat and barley grown by Western farmers. (Video here).
It’s finally over.

JimBob59’s comment after the CBC poll says it all.
It’s not over till someone actually sells independently.
Surprize, surprize, the old addage of don’t count your chickens till they hatch.

Your kidding right.
The Glengarrian, thanks for the Ontario Grain Farmer website. This was an interesting read. No wonder the apparatchiks are so opposed to making the Wheat Board voluntary.
Ken (Kulak)…I was rather shocked to learn that export permits from the CWB were required to sell Ontario wheat out of the country. The tentacles of the CWB are deep and far reaching it seems …
I think we ALL are going to win with the ending of the CWB monopoly… a historic day for Canadian agriculture.
So nice to have freedom of choice for farmers. Two instruments of statist oppression eliminated (the other is the gun registry) and next it’s time to start on the HRC’s. Can’t forget the end of Kyoto and it’s been a good year for individual rights in Canada.
PMSH has been impressive in how he’s waited for opportune times to eliminate statist institutions. Not fast enough for a lot of people but probably done in a manner that creates the least disruption by moonbats. It may be no coincidence that we now have Sun TV finally providing non-politically correct news at the same time that the statist icons have started to fall in quick unison. It didn’t seem that long ago when Ezra Levant sent me a bumper sticker calling for the end of the CWB and gun registry (and something else that I can’t remember now) after subscribing to the Western Standard.
This has truly been a year to remember. Bye bye LGR, bye bye Kyoto, bye bye CWB, bye bye CBC.
Okay, okay, I’m getting a little ahead of myself but…

Aye. Great stuff. And Property Rights????
Along with my elation at the current progress of this, I am still apprehensive about how the near term may transpire, being not yet convinced that the beast is truly slain. There still exists a desperate and determined foe that has yet to exhaust their potential legal challenges. I wait on tenterhooks for the next few weeks.
All that said, I fully expect Harper et al to prevail. I only worry about delay and another year under the smothering oppression of the borg.
“Aye. Great stuff. And Property Rights????”
I would have thought that the events of the last 2 weeks might have tempered your enthusiasm for legislated “property rights”. If judges like justice Campbell can’t even recognize the supremacy of recently passed legislation can you imagine the worth he and his court would place on some prior piece of legislation that enshrines “property rights”.
You think they are going to roll over and play dead, right?
Congratulations to the farmers of Western Canada, to Gerry Ritz, to David Anderson, to PM Stephen Harper and to posters here at SDA. I like your comment Ken (kulak). My Dad did not live to see this day and I am sorry he did not; I know, however, that he is celebrating in Heaven and I am damn!- in honor of Mr. Ritz, not potty mouth kid of turdo – sure he is having a beer with the rest of those liberated farmers in W. Canada.
I think those of us that support the Government in their efforts to end the monopoly owes a big thank you to the M.P. for Winnipeg centre. None other then the N.D.P.’s own Pat Martin. Early on in the debate Pat started off by talking about a beaver biting off its own testicles. Kind of set the tone for intelligent debate from the NDP. About a third of the way through the debate Pat said there is no way the Government can get this legislation through the house in time for the 2012-13 crop year. His actual words were “the single desk will be an option in 2012-13” which never did make any sense but we knew what Pat meant. I think Pat’s comments served to motivate the Government and make them more determined then ever to get the legislation passed. Thanks for that Pat. About half way through the debate Pat decided to add some dignity to the debate by using a bunch of four letter words on his twitter account. Really classy move Pat. Two thirds of the way through Pat said he thought the Government had the right to change the Wheat Board Act without a farmer vote even though he and his party spent hours and days in the House of Commons claiming that a farmer vote was needed. At the end of the debate Pat added some humor to the whole thing by calling bill C-18 Bill CF-18. We had a good laugh with you at that one Pat. So thanks for your help, its been great. We’ll see you around.
