CWB: Royal Assent

From the Montreal Gazette, the only part that matters;

“The Conservatives believe in setting the Western farmers free,” said Manitoba Conservative Senator Don Plett. “It’s a great day for Western Canada.”
Shortly after the vote, Gov. Gen. David Johnston gave the bill royal assent. […]
With royal assent and then the government immediately proclaiming the bill, it means the farmer-elected directors of the CWB are out of their jobs and farmers can begin forward contracting their grain sales with whatever grain company they wish. The actual monopoly won’t be lifted until August 2012.

Update: A statement(pdf) from the Grain Growers of Canada, whose news releases generally manage to evade detection by Wheat Board friendly media.
More: Another CBC poll….
UPDATE (CBC): The Canadian Wheat Board announced Friday that its remaining directors met and have decided to discontinue legal challenges to the legislation ending the board’s monopoly on marketing the wheat and barley grown by Western farmers. (Video here).
It’s finally over.

  1. Finally.
Lets hope this whole charade is over. (I wonder if appeals to higher courts are under way?)

  2. Thank God almighty, free at last!
Now let’s crack the books and see where the money’s been going over the years……
That sound you hear is the sound of scurrying cockroaches.

  3. Thank G o d almighty, free at last!

(hmmm, certain word/words caught me in the spam filter???)

  4. What a great day for Canada . . . now all they need to do is extend the philosophy of breaking up closed shop agreements to Unions.
Make it optional to join a union, not a condition of working in any field of employment.
What is fair for grain farmers is fair for public sector staff, nurses etc.

  5. The western Canadian economy will grow by billions of dollars a year now that cwb monopoly is gone. As a farmer I could not be happier that we are finally free of such slavery law making. Thank you Steven Harper and Gerry Ritz.

  6. Trudopealot Trudopealot is falling, oh my my this is a Boob Rae extreme nightmare to be sure. The idiot dominos are falling as quick as they can, HRDC’s and other assorted fruitcake and nut bowls of liberalism can’t be far behind with the nest of commies known as the CBC being also on the liberal demolition crews radar, one can hope. Thank you PMSH, for delivering farmers of the prairie provinces this Christmas gift.

  7. What thoughts the mandarins at the CBC this morning?
Many of us here would love to see this pack of vultures defunded. PMSH might think that the CBC is putting themselves out of work in a less politically antagonizing way.
Myself I would love to see Ezra Levant led a SUN TV crew into the CBC foyer announcing that they had won the national broadcasting contract and that they were taking over the building. If that useless 22 Minutes can have fun on the tax payers dime then why not SUN TV?

  8. This has truly been a year to remember. Bye bye LGR, bye bye Kyoto, bye bye CWB, bye bye CBC.
Okay, okay, I’m getting a little ahead of myself but…

  9. Folks,
The greatest danger here is after the Conservatives have done the heavy lifting and we have experienced a number of prosperous years, we (the Canadian populace)decide we want and need “CHANGE” (TM)or something “sexy”…then we vote for Trudeau (or somebody like him)…
    Wait for it.

  10. We just need the courts to throw out the insane legal challenges put up by the cwb and their partners (unions, nfu, united church, etc…) and perhaps farmers can truly be free.
Thank you Mr. Harper, Mr. Ritz, and all the others before, and behind the scene. This has been a sad chapter in Canadian history that will hopefully finally end.

  11. Yes well done Kate & other westerners.
Now people, we need to tackle the egg & milk business in ON & QC!

  12. I never thought I would see the day when the CWB went the way of the dodo. Personal choice…what a concept. On we got to the CBC….Be afraid Peter Mansbridge be very afraid.

  13. The principle is simple. The courts cannot bind the government by preventing them from changing laws made by former governments. Sorry, women can’t vote. It was the law.

  14. I lift a glass to those farmers, like my dad, who did not quite get to see the CWB lose its big hammer.
I am eager to see what new businesses sprout up from all this.

    Exactly!

  16. Milk, eggs, chicken, and turkey. Now why is it that we are having the poorest members of society subsidizing multi-millionaire farmers? Why do the basic healthy food choices cost twice as much in Canada as they do in the US?

  17. I recall the milk business….
This was during the period, the OMMB decimated the Ontario dairy industry, to rpovide Quebec with a new industry, with the able assistance of the Dairy Branch….For some bizarre reason, the larger producers could not attain quality standards despite cutting edge facilities but small obsolete producers had no problem.
Meanwhile, the Ontario milk processors collapsed, unable to get milk, while the surviving producers had the % of their quota they could ship vastly reduced. Some producers recieved bills rather than cheques for over-producing….while the processors could not get milk to process….
I recall the local manager of the Dairy Branch, attending to do his premises inspection being flabbergasted to find Herfords in the lot and the milk house with no bulk tank and obviously a storage facility for parts and oil-grease.
After the cows etc went, we regularly received the best quality tests, by mail, that we had ever got for milk we had never produced/shipped. This slimmy beurocrat was at a loss to explain….He was put out that we wouldn’t give him the copies…to “get to the bottom of this”…
The sale of the cows bought the feeders and the sale of the quota paid for a new tractor….
Currently there are no small milk producers and the surviving large herds involve investments of millions not just specialized buildings and equipment but also quotas which are signifigant investments….which are the price of farms not just new tractors……
Eliminating the OMMB would have to address/involve the capital involved in quota…for starters.

  18. Free at last. Stalinism in the grain trade is gone. Thank you to everybody that had a hand in this.

  19. Sorry, Kate, this is horribly OT, but:
According to CTV News, Christopher Hitchens has died. I didn’t agree with all his views (some I did), but at least the man could write a coherent essay. He eschewed the florid, otiose, and rotund prose favoured by, say, Conrad Black, and instead used the simple, blunt English words of Orwell. I, for one, will miss him.

  20. While great news about the CWB issue I can’t help but think about “what might have been”.
In the 1990’s when Ralph Goodale started deregulating grain freight rates and transportation there were close to 60 thousand farms in Sask. Today that number has dwindled to less than 35 thousand. Mr. Goodale brought transportation and freight rates into the modern era but insisted that we deal with obsolete grain marketing structures. How many of our farms that wound down their operations in those years, would be with us today if the Liberals had shown a little more leadership on this issue.

  21. Praise the Lord!
This is indeed Good News, great day.
Thank you to all who worked toward this decison.
    Merry Christmas to all!

  22. I’m not at all surprised that the remaing directors of the CWB have dropped any further legal action to stop the legislation from being implemented.
Lets see now…….. the CWB as we knew it no longer exists. It no longer has a brand. It no longer has a bank account. All of this means that those remaining directors would have to pay future legal expenses OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKET!! And, in the end, they would still lose.

  23. Psalm 67:4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy!
    Yep that works for me…
Less whine…more wheat, put that barley in your hopper.
I raise a toast would you like grain distilled whiskey or barley hopped beer?
    Congratulations Canada.
    Cheers

  24. On a scale of 1 to 10 just how good does it feel to be free men and woman, at last, after 70+ years of the CWB?
    Good luck to you all!

  25. Not to worry Ralph Goodale will put his money where his mouth is and pay for all court costs to fight for the wheat board. It’s only right Ralph.

  26. Thank you, Kate, for your roll in this victory. Another case where, I’m sure, SDA got results.

  27. So when will the Conservatives, in their egregious
hypocrisy, set the taxpayer free from forever funding freeloading farmers??? Hummm, Kate? Humm?
We don’t need no stinkin’ freeloading farmers, do we?

  28. Free at last. Stalinism in the grain trade is gone. Thank you to everybody that had a hand in this.(Kulak)
But Stalinism in farm subsidies lives strong.
But you got yours, didn’t you, comrade?

  29. It’s not over till someone actually sells independently.
Surprize, surprize, the old addage of don’t count your chickens till they hatch.

  30. While you’re busy shooting down journalists, maybe you could find a phone number for Mia Rabson (Gazette article linked above) and ask her to explain how Stephen Harper has managed to be in government for “nearly 7 years,” since February 2006? Time-compression machine?

  31. Ty to PMSH and his team for delivering on this promise, nice to have a pm with courage and fortitude
