A “food insecure” Muppet is helping to promote a national “Food for Thought” campaign that teaches poor families to seek out nutritious food and to eat on the taxpayers’ tab.
At the National Press Club on Thursday, Lily the Muppet – who worries about her family not having enough money to feed her properly — pitched free food at school:
“Sometimes we can’t always afford to buy all the food that we need,” Lily said. “I mean, but we’ve been finding lots of ways that we can get help…Yeah, for example, at school I get a free breakfast and a lunch…part of the meal plan.”
I’m disappointed but not surprised that franchises such as the Muppets are used to push political agendas.
I was planning on going to this movie, but I will now wait until is appears on my TV.
My son’s school just started a “breakfast club” in order to provide free breakfasts to the kids that apparently don’t get breakfast. The problem is the school doesn’t want to single out the the poor kids so they call it a “club” and my 7 year old is throwing fits because we won’t let him “join” and get free breakfast at school. His whole class is going to the first one and after that it will be more voluntary. He thinks ‘everyone’ will go and doesn’t want to be left out.
I have two problems with the club. First, universality increases the expense as children like my son, who gets a good breakfast at home, now want to take part in program they don’t need. And second, in the neighbourhood I live in I can’t believe there are kids who don’t get a good breakfast because their family can’t ‘afford’ it. If I had that problem I would be canceling TV, or internet, or my cell phone, or cut any number of luxuries before my son went hungry. I would love to know how many of these hungry kids have parents who smoke or have cable TV, or such and are unwilling to make any sacrifices.
I volunteer at a local school’s breakfast club.
Yes, there are some raggedy kids attending and I’m sure that they would never get a decent meal at home. On the other hand, many come from middle-class families that are too lazy or too busy with their careers to feed them. The club acts as a baby-sitting service for those.
What disturbs me more is the lack of manners and self-control these kids exhibit. Some of them would be better off with a crack on the ass than a full belly.
Food in schools must not be paid for with taxes. We continue to breed dependency on the state.
Well judging by current decline, the state ain’t going to be there in 10 years.
As I’ve heard before, but can’t recall the source: the poorest families in North America would be middle class in China/India and upper class in most of the developing world. The worst nourished child in Canada would likely be among the best nourished in Africa.
Get some perspective.
Non-leftists in the West seriously need to wake up to the fact that their kids are being indoctrinated by similarly indoctrinated folk-Marxists who may or may not even realize that they’re just promoting, almost by rote, what they’ve been taught by other folk-Marxists – which might explain the anger and the glazed, self-righteous, thick, non-comprehending countenance.
A few days ago there was a post at Big Government about a kid who came home from school and told his dad “Fox News Lies!” After inquiring, the father found out that his son’s teacher, a public sector unionista, had been teaching the kids about Fox News’ “lies”, including the “lie” that public sector employees make more than private sector counterparts who are doing the same job.
The same teacher also gave a test in which his young charges were required to fill in the blanks with the correct answers. The underline function doesn’t work in the comments here, so I’ve italicized the “correct” answers that students were *required* to fill in to pass the test:

The common sense, independent-minded, traditional mores that the free West was built on are essentially proscribed behaviour in the educational system, and in televised educational “tools” like Sesame Street.
Non-leftist parents need to do whatever it takes to prevent their kids from being brainwashed by a bunch of hippie-hangover leftists.
Get involved, keep an eye on the curriculum, ask questions, and put a stop to this quasi-Marxist bullshit.
Yeah, I remember wanting to be able to eat a peanut butter sangie for lunch rather than going home for a good meal too. It’s the nature of being a kid, you barely have enough sense to come in out of the rain, much less plan a diet.
My sister-in-law, an Ontario grade one teacher for 4 years, talks exclusively about 2 things in her job:
1. Special needs students self diagnosed by herself and other teachers, specifically Aspergers autism (8 of 400 students(2%) when the national incidence rate is 0.1%) and
2. School breakfasts, because the precious darlings can’t learn on an empty stomach.
I have NEVER, even a single time, heard her ever speak about school lessons, regular mainstream students, or for that matter TEACHING. Only her job’s social element.
The idea of school provided meals is that kids can’t learn when their bellies are nagging them.
You’d think that we’d have better scholastic results by now if that premise were true, wouldn’t you?
What I want to know, is where did all the fat kids they were complaining about disappear to?
Do the school meals contain bananas and cucumbers by chance? I smell a racism/sexism/islamophobia lawsuit brewing!!!! Intolerant Canadians.

I was surprised to find out that our local food bank supplies food for the breakfast programs at our public schools.
So what happens from june 28 to sept 4? I dont see cordwood stacks of starving bodies throughout the summer months. How are these poor wretches fed? All I see in the summer are children playing to and fro without a care in the world. Maybe they turn off their metabolism and actually gain weight from sunshine!
I’ve volunteered with an elementary school lunch program. Going by the amount that gets thrown away, these kids aren’t starving. (Same goes for the “clients” at the soup kitchen.)
The local “soup kitchen” is like a date for the underclass. I suspect 99.9% don’t need it but that’s where all their friends eat. A lot of middle class white ladies then get to feel good about themselves.
If you have the energy to breed them, then you should also be able to feed them!
Parents whom allow their children to go to school without having eaten breakast in their own home should be charged with child neglect or child abuse!
How is this different from when the kiddies become adults and still scam free meals?…

Food insecurity is such a lame statistic. It doesn’t represent hunger, it represents the threat of hunger. This is a great marker of prosperity, when actual hunger is so low, the representatives of the impoverished have to make up a statistic in order to convince people that there is a problem.
As far as giving the poor food, I’m not opposed. School lunches should be low in fat, high in fiber, and so on. Hand out dry beans, carrots, onions, etc. These aren’t expensive.
