This won’t sit well with the proponents of civilizational dismantling.
No, this doesn’t change the alarmists’ position. This *PROVES* the point that what is really needed is income redistribution so that we can pay (foreign aid) the least industrialized nations money.
Remember, AGW isn’t about saving the planet, it’s about income redistribution.
@Pete
You are correct. At best they will just change the name of the tax.
I wonder if this means the PC’s in Alberta will reconsider spending $2 billion of our tax dollars to pump plant food underground?
Wildrose all the way!
This is the best news I’ve read in decades.
After reading this my skeptical nature kicked and I had to see if this satellite was real. It is – GOSAT (ibuki in Japanese) :
From Wiki
“The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite or GOSAT, also known as Ibuki (いぶき, Ibuki?, meaning “breath”[3] or “Vitality”[4][unreliable source?] in Japanese), is an Earth observation satellite and the world’s first satellite dedicated to greenhouse-gas-monitoring,[5] which will be used to measure densities of carbon dioxide and methane from 56,000 locations on the Earth’s atmosphere.[4] The GOSAT was developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and launched on January 23, 2009, from the Tanegashima Space Center.[4] Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, and National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) [6] will use the data to track one of the gases causing the greenhouse effect, and the data will be shared with NASA and other space and scientific organizations in other countries.[5]”
Another search result from Scientific America looked promising and, given the GOSAT’s CO2 mapping conclusions, a bit amusing: Elite Scientific Advisory Panel Says New Technology is Needed to Verify Emissions Cuts
Determining whether individual nations comply with future climate pacts will require a new satellite to keep tabs on countries that resist other forms of monitoring, a government advisory panel says.
The elite, independent panel of scientists — known as JASON — examined the United States’ ability to monitor the progress of international agreements to reduce carbon dioxide emissions produced by burning fossil fuels.
[…]
The outlook for monitoring “non-cooperative” countries is likely to improve over the next three to five years, the report says, with the anticipated availability of new data from a Japanese carbon monitoring satellite called GOSAT and an instrument aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite, as well as the planned launch of another NASA satellite, the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=jason-greenhouse-gas-monitoring
Anyone heard from JASON lately?
The inconvenient truth about photosynthesis.
Doesn’t matter. Eco-greenies believe their religious-like dogma without question. Now shut up and pass the Kool-Aid.
Back to my skepticism, how exactly does this effect happen? Is it due to actual elevated CO2 production at the equators (from vegetation and land use), higher temperature or because of the way air naturally moves around the globe? Anyone??
Channeling a warmists, the responses to such inconvenient data would be to point at the West’s “historic” CO2 emissions, per capita emissions, ability to pay, colonization, moral responsibility, blah, blah.
As the former creditors of GM can attest, being owed and collecting are two different things.
What has turned the socialist EU’s head? EU has done a 180* turn from a dove to a hawk.
Could it be Kyoto collapse or euro collapse or the sushi report or all three?
See “legal parallelism”.
Notice a Pole is leading the charge.
“The Polish presidency is leading a group of member states that want to ensure the conditions for a second commitment period include firm commitments to “legal parallelism” – the principle that if the EU signs up to an international legally binding treaty, developing countries must do the same.”

The map zones tend to coincide with forest regions. The Northern temperate and boreal forests could be sinking more carbon due to management (harvesting and accelerated growth/carbon sinking from reforestation) in climates with slower (litter) decomposition rates. Carbon dioxide from industrialization also accelerates forest growth in these regions. The Southern arid and tropical regions experience significant wood burning for fuel and rapid decomposition negating faster growth rates.
Just a thought.
Whatever the explanation, it puts another nail in the coffin of Kyoto and any other AGW-premised scheme concocted from the hubris of Al Gore’s ventures or Moe Strong’s intergovernmental circle jerks.
Unfortunately, the unreformable church of green public education will censor this information out of the existing anti-science curricula.
Nothing to see here, unless we know exactly when the data was captured. If it is in northern hemisphere summer, this graph is exactly what you would expect.
The CO2 concentration in our atmosphere actually drops in summer, despite our burning of fossil fuels, owing to the massive plant growth in North America and Eurasia. It goes up in winter, with each year concentration exceeding the previous. For last year the increase was 2.3 ppm.
GreenNeck, scroll to the bottom of the Musings from Chiefio post. It has an update that shows the month to month changes of global CO2 concentrations.
The concept here is not that new. The COP national negotiating teams were well aware of this early in the 2000s. It fell under the UNFCCC jargon LULCF (Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry). There was a large COP workshop on this topic in Poznan, July 2000, where it came to light that North America was a net absorber of CO2, and Europe and Asia were net emitters.
Over the next couple of years there was intense wrangling over this among the negotiating teams. The negotiating problem was that the Umbrella Group (Canada, US, Japan, Australia, New Zealand) was divided on the issue, whereas the EU and China + G77 nations were united in blocking it. The US dropping out of Kyoto negotiations at The Hague COP conference in 2003 demolished any attempt to take this into account, as Canada was essentially left alone.
There is reason to believe that the Chretien administration after 1998 had been led to believe that they could secure considerable reduction in Canada’s obligations under Kyoto through LULUCF. This was buried by EU opposition.
Canada made a final attempt to amend Kyoto in late 2003, seeking credit for Canadian gas substituting for US coal, but this too was denied, arguing that Canada was seeking changes after negotiations were closed.
So the issue is not new. What is new is a satellite capable of monitoring this. Even had it existed 15 years ago however, it would not likely have changed the outcome of the negotiations. The purpose of Kyoto and the COP conferences is and always has been to restrain North American economic growth by the EU by compelling North America to shoulder most of the North-South financial transfers that the Kyoto emission reductios require.
LC Bennett, one of the reasons for this effect is reforestation. Today we have only about half hte land in North America under cultivation that we had in 1920, and it’s continuing to shrink. There are several reasons for this. Most of the cultivated land loss is to reforestation, with some very small bits of it going to urban development.
There are two main reasons for loss of cultivated land. First is the great rise in agricultural productivity over the past half century. The second is getting rid of horses for bulk transport. Get rid of the hay-burners, and the demand for feed grain goes way down. So, farmland is abandoned over time.

“The body count continues to rise as the Green Jobs Revolution sputters its way to the end of a disastrous 2011. Few seemed to notice last week when the electric vehicle maker A123 Systems—poster child for successful clean tech investing—“temporarily” laid off 125 workers at its flagship manufacturing plants in Michigan on the eve of the Thanksgiving media break. It also reduced its earnings guidance for 2011 by $45 million, because its anchor customer, Fisker Automotive, “unexpectedly” delayed the production ramp-up for its Karma luxury electric car—again.
Could these be the same plants that Democratic congressional leaders hailed as the birth of a new era in American manufacturing? The same plants that received a $249 million U.S. Department of Energy grant from the same stimulus money bucket that funded Solyndra? The same plants for which Michigan shelled out $125 million in incentives to lure away from Massachusetts?
Environmentally correct planners put all this public money to work to relieve the technology bottleneck they believed held back our transition to electric cars. So they invested my money and yours into building the largest lithium ion automotive battery plant in North America—to supply a Finnish electric car manufacturer backed by Al Gore’s venture capital fund and which received $529 million in federal loan guarantees. That Finnish manufacturer was supposed to begin production in 2009, but to date has only shipped 40 cars into the U.S. Those cars were delivered to a handful of millionaires and billionaires like Leonardo DeCaprio and Ray Lane who received tax credits because they bought an electric car.

Yes, John C., the seasonal patterns certainly show the big variations in CO2 conc. Watching the slide show it looks like only May/June have Canada in the gold and red range.
cgh, you’d think graphics like this would convince AGW fence-sitters that Canada is not the Mordor portrayed in the MSM. We have no reason to feel guilty about our high standard of living that is sustained by our current energy generation mix.
Just read your 1:09 post. I’ve read that the US N.E. has more forest than ever for those reasons. This reforestation must be mainly in the East and the West Coast. Here in the Prairies there is more conserved wetland due to DU but probably not significantly less farmland/ranchland.
100 years ago there was no trees in western Canada. Today, 100’s of thousands. Where does all the CO2 go. What we produce is well used up and than some.Tell aly goring and the fruit fly that they are the ones that are creating all the greenhouse gas with their big mouths and sucking all the money out of this they can.
@ LC Bennett @ 1:22, this is not a scientific observation, but photos taken around 1900 in my community show scrub trees and now there are actual plots of bush scattered all over. The Cypress Hills were bare when Fort Walsh was built in the 1870s and now the hills are forested. I think much of this forestation is due to the lack of prairie fires.
Other than that, my thoughts in regards to the capture screen at the top of the thread are wow. Big difference in what we have been led to believe.
Ken. Are you saying someone lied to us?
Yes, I would say that. I might add that some people should not only be exposed as liars, but should also be charged with something. Not sure what, maybe crimes against humanity. Dr. Fruitfly would be a good place to start.
Yes, Ken you are right but that will never happen.
— and what does Japan owe the rest of the planet for swewing radioactive waste into the environment for the past half year?
Get bent Kyoto.
All it has ever been is
“Taking money from poor people in rich countries and giving it to rich people in poor countries”.
The Japanese are non white so they can get away with this. No differently than the fact that they are a wealthy G8 country but exempt from multiculturalism.
No disrespect on my part to the Japanese, all the power to them (no Fukashima pun intended). Our issue lays with the Liberal progressive left that say’s it’s ok for them but not us.
capt-bob right on.
I have spent quite a bit of time in Cypress Hills, Ken. You’re right, there was a fire there about a hundred years ago that wiped out the entire forest and, because of fire prevention, there hasn’t been one there since.
As for the rest of Southern Sask (the grain growing regions), I am not convinced that there has been significant changes in the last 100 years. There is a few more windbreaks perhaps but they are offset by increased irrigation in other areas that were once too dry to farm. If I was more ambitious I suppose I could look it up but I probably won’t.
“Taking money from poor people in rich countries and giving it to rich people in poor countries”.
Truer words were never spoken. Sounds like our foreign aid efforts which end up in Swiss accounts.
Afghan government troops thought they got a big raise when they started to get paid by direct bank deposit. The officers had been stealing half the money when they were paid cash.

Ironic that the reddest part of the map includes Durban.
My neice who works for Sierra Enviromental won’t like this.
China came out today to condemn Canada for backing away from our Kyoto “commitments” saying we are setting a bad example. Someone send them the article.
The CH4 graph of CO2 has a red dot around the north end of Baffin Island. Don’t know why that would be there.
Talking about Dr. Fruitfly, he has an ad program saying: “Climate change is melting the snow and ice, and the rising water is getting too close for comfort. Santa must relocate — fast — to make sure that all the nice boys and girls still have a Happy Holiday.”
A link to his ad is here: http://blogs.calgaryherald.com/2011/11/29/ho-ho-hold-up-using-santa-as-climate-change-victim/
LC Bennett, southern Saskatchewan is quite barren of forested areas. My area is just north of Saskatoon and it is this area that has more bush than in 1900.
I do not remember the issue date of the National Geographic, but maybe 15-20 years ago before we cancelled as it was going enviro-wacky, there was an article that said there were more trees now than when the white man came to North America.
The prairies stretched as far north as Edmonton. Presumably bison kept the trees down. Today, if it isn’t farmed, it’s forested.
