Actually Rose, in Canada, the pieces of paper that says he can milk those cows in Canada would be worth around 5 million dollars. That is the capitalized value of the consumer subsidy going into milk quota, or why you pay $10 for a $4 block of cheese in the grocery store.
Passing of the legislation was a done deal when Harper was elected with a majority but this seems to be what the news coverage is all about. I have been looking for some good commentary on what is happening in Eastern Canada and why the MP’s are finding it necessary to vote against the wishes of Western Canada on a Western Canadian issue.

Banachek is right, on our small farm in the ’70s, we sold cream to the cheese factory because the ‘quota’ for milk was too expensive. In my neck of the woods of Eastern Ontario, old dairy farmers get more cash for the quota than for the livestock and farm added together when they retire. About 15 years ago at a farm auction here the finals bids were $500,000 for the quota, $110,000 for the herd and $300,000 for the farm. If the licence to produce something costs more than the land and equipment combined what do you think that does to the cost of the product? Sadly, the milk boards are provincial so they won’t change anytime soon.
