  8. Do you remember where you were and what you were doing exactly 48 years ago today?
    Breaking News From Dallas, Texas
    Me, I was working that service bench at Tall Pine TV in Lacombe, Alberta. We always had several TV sets in various states of repair playing in the background. Probably watching the CBC channel from Red Deer when the news came on.
    TV was only in black and white, and there were only two or three channels available to watch unless you had a real tall TV antenna and a rotator.
    At the time I was 23 years old, single and trying to find my way through life. I knew that this was an earth shattering event, and especially with all the wild events that followed in the few days after. Lots of talk about evil Russkies, Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby. There was a lot of speculation about who was behind all this and about the reason for it all. (and it goes on today)
    Anyway, I made a big decision shortly after to move along to something more substantial. Went back to high school part-time to pick up a few subjects I needed to enter an electronics technology program. Less than two years later, I got hired in Toronto to work for Honeywell as a field service trainee on their H200 mainframe computer product line. And that gig lasted 25 years until the mainframe era ended.
    I still wonder if the events of that day was the jolt that sent me on my way, or if I would have found the motivation on my own.

  12. EBD, not surprising that Seattle has a statue of Lenin and Poland a statue of Regan. The Poles we talked to in Gdansk in September 2010 wanted nothing more to do with Lenin or Marx.

    This is obviously a ploy to keep our increasingly empty schools full — and to regard early childhood educators as “experts” in child rearing as opposed to children’s parents being the best early childhood educators of their own children.
    The study appears to have been written under the auspices of the AECEO (Association of Early Child Educators Ontario) and its findings were launched — wait for it — at OISE (Ontario Institute of Studies in Education). Kerry McCuaig, one of the three authors of the study, is a Senior Policy Fellow at the Atkinson Centre, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto.
    Isn’t it interesting that there are no incentives for encouraging parents of young children to stay home with them for the first few years of their lives. According to OISE et al., early childhood education “experts” need to be on the job — ‘best, actually, for the parents to be out of the picture if the state is going to be able to indoctrinate the tiny tots into the progressive way of life.
    What a pile of hooey. What did it cost the taxpayer, I wonder?

    This is right up his alley after all. He does not want us to raise our own children, we may teach them conservative values and how to think for themselves. Can’t have that.

    Interesting that after the collapse of the communist Soviet utopia in Russia the first program to get the axe was the government daycare program. The Russian people no longer wanted their kids brainwashed.

  33. In today’s Calgary Herald, D6, is an Advertisement – Opinion by Bill Bell, Professional Geologist.
    The article is page and a half long, it seems that Bell paid for it by himself, though others may know better.
    The subject is:

    “Let Us Debate The Scientific Facts”
    Here is an interesting bit out of the article, “….a number of scientists…..have challenged….” certain hypothesis, ….”that it contradicts the second law of thermodynamics which states that ‘warmth can never spontaneously pass from a body of low temperature (the atmosphere) to body of high temperature (the Earth’s surface) without the application of work’….”
    Bill Bell also says at the end of the article:

    Since this is an advertisement it is not as far as I know available on the website. Others may know different.
    It is a well documented article on the side of sceptics.

    I don’t think the issue is that there should be incentives to encourage parents to stay home with their kids. The problem is that the economic depredations of the past thirty or forty years, caused by big government, “social justice” and all the other left-wing garbage (Cloward-Piven and all that), have made it more difficult for families to get by on one income. Robbing Peter to pay Paul eventually leads to the impoverishment of Peter and Paul.
    Having said this, I’m pretty much in agreement with your take on the issue: it’s the childhood education establishment trying to drum up work for themselves while indoctrinating our kids with their ideologies that are not reality-based.
