    A Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph columnist and author of The Rise of Political Lying and The Triumph of the Political Class, he is particularly known for acerbic commentary on the hypocrisy and apparent mendacity of contemporary politicians. Oborne describes himself as a “a regular Anglican churchgoer”.
    This guy rips into a European Union apparatchik something fierce. The apparatchik keeps his uninvolved cool repeating constantly the same thing, much like you would expect a robot do.
    Osborne tells him directly into his face that he, the bureaucrat is an idiot.

He even cited approvingly an absurdly mendacious propaganda film produced by US global warming zealots vilifying shale gas.”

  23. The obvious problem, Ken, is that most politicians don’t have any life experience beyond politics. Unfortunately, the people they rely on to fill in the gaps also have a very limited worldview -university lifers, activists, self-appointed spokespeople for various groups. The views of these consultants and experts trumps the opinions of the average Joe every time. Almost comically the political class and elites then wonder why there is an accelerating resentment and lack of trust of politicians and traditional social institutions.
    On that note, here is yet another meddling, micromanaging, “revenue” harvesting, it’s-for-your-own-good tax that will soon be replicated in North America.

    Denmark has followed Hungary’s lead in imposing taxes of certain types of magical foods that make people fat…
    The predictable result was hoarding of pizza, butter, and who knows what else. Some years ago, Denmark banned trans fat, but I guess the place is still getting fatter so they had to take the nannyism up to the plus-sized department. The country has been taxing soda pop for a while too as well as candy bars for almost 100 years.
    And yet such taxes haven’t seemed to work. But surely this new tax will have the desired effect and the legendary thick ankles of the Jutland will become as svelte and shapely as those in sub-Saharan Africa.

Then there’s the exasperation of school officials finding it more and more difficult to deal with these boundary-hopping parents.
    From California to Massachusetts, districts are hiring special investigators to follow children from school to their homes to determine their true residences and decide if they “belong” at high-achieving public schools.

    “I just returned from a trip to New York, where earlier last week I gave a talk at the Council on Foreign Relations. The topic was the question on everyone’s mind these days: the outlook for China’s economy.
    Over the past several weeks, a number of news reports and market figures have caught my attention, which appear to indicate that China’s economy may be approaching a crisis. I use the word “crisis” in the traditional (or medical) sense, meaning a critical turning point when tensions or contradictions are resolved, for better or worse — sometimes in unexpected ways. One potential interpretation of this crisis is that China is entering the terminal stage of a bubble, and that what we are seeing are the early signs of a much broader collapse. But it may not be that simple. I have been saying since the year began that China is due for a correction, and just last week I told the Globe and Mail that such a correction could be a lot worse than most people expect. How exactly the situation will unfold, though, and whether we’ve already reached a tipping point or not, remains to be seen.     Let’s start with real estate. For the past several months, China’s official media have been touting official data indicating that while most Chinese cities are still seeing housing prices rise, a growing number of cities are starting to see a plateau or even decline in prices — evidence, they say, that the central government’s cooling measures are finally working. More significant, in my eyes, are reports — which began emerging in late August — that in several cities across China, prices in primary housing markets (developers selling to homeowners) have begun falling away from those in secondary markets (homeowners selling to other homeowners). The effected markets include not only 1st tier metropolises (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen) , but also 2nd tier (Chongqing, Wuhan, Tianjin, Zhenghou) and 3rd tier (Ningbo, Foshan, Wuxi) ones as well. In late August, reports had secondary market prices for many downtown properties in Chongqing at 4-10% higher than primary prices. Last week, another report put the price gap in 1st tier cities like Beijing and Shanghai much higher, at 20%.
