Put on a happy face

In an article published in the Globe and Mail on August 19, Gerald Caplan sneers:

Mr. Levant – a prince in the Empire of the Sun – devoted a column to (Geert Wilders) and a cringe-worthy 44-minute interview on his nightly show on Sun TV, must viewing for several Canadians

Reality just smiles back:

“…the rookie Sun News battered CTV News Channel Aug. 18, by bettering it in every time slot between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m…..In addition to the Sun’s dominance over CTV News Channel in that period, Sun News topped CBC News Network with its Canada Live, Daily Brief, Byline and Charles Adler programs.”

  1. As always, the story is in the comments people are leaving in response to Caplan’s article – and it’s not going well for the obscure NDPer.

  2. Caplan, to no surprise, is really just a Layton-lite. Nice amiable guy but pretty much clueless when it comes to anything of substance.

  3. The comments by G&M readers, after Caplan’s ignorant diatribe, are reassuring. Thinking people will no longer keep quiet when the foundations of our country are being threatened.
Caplan appears to be a male Heather Mallick.

  4. It seems to me that Caplin is getting tarred and feathered in the comments on the G&M site. I am sure he will declare that it is because so many people have been corrupted by watching SUN TV, that oh by the way, nobody watches.

  5. The leftward drift of the alphabet networks has been so corrosive and complete that only the hard core left and the politically brain dead can stand watching them. Sun and Fox can’t help but pick up centrists along with conservatives and libertarians.

  6. Caplan? Wasn’t he a member of the government, or at least the party that while in power stole 100 million dollars through phony unity promotions aka The Sponsorship Scandal.
The $100 million has not yet been paid back.
I am happy to report yearly progress is being made.
New charges/plea deals come out slowly but surely at regular 6-9 month intervals. Gotta be patient I guess.

  7. E. P. – no if I recall he has been a hardcore socialist NDPer all his adult life. And the world – and the Canadian political system is passing him by. A heavy number of Negative comments will in time see him moved even into more obscure places in the media.
As for SunTv – they a re drubbing the competition and they arent even available to bell subscribers yet and if i recall CBCs newschannel is mandatory not optional.

  8. taking imams at their word is demonizing them? What, we’re not supposed to believe them when they say they hate Jews and Christians? What kind of a strange universe does this Dipper reside in?
Meanwhile I would bet he wouldn’t be so quick to defend a tea partier for the made-up crap they get blamed for.

  9. We should all, if we like SunTv, recruit our friends and family to their viewership ranks.
And get your local dentist, fast food or coffee joint to switch off the indoctrination channel from Front Street West, and turn it to SunTv!
A little ‘direct action’ but this time for the good.

  10. Steyn and Coulter both rely on exaggeration to make a point at times. Levant interviewed Wilders on his show but disagreed with some of the more extreme positions.
I agree with Caplan that one should not equate a “violence-prone Muslim lunatic fringe” with all Muslims. The point that Steyn has raised, and which Caplan ignores, is that there appears to be an unnerving amount of sympathy for that lunatic fringe among the rest of the religion’s adherents.

  11. Mississauga Matt, chutzpahticular, and Dennis K: I just read them now, and you really weren’t kidding about the comments thread under Caplan’s article. Remarkable stuff, almost startling when you consider that it’s the G&M. There’s clearly a growing unwillingness in this country to abide with Ivory Tower, elitist remonstrations against non-politically-correct expressions.
One particular comment comes closest to summing up the sentiments of the – vast, overwhelming – majority of commenters:

“It is difficult to decide what is most offensive about (Caplan’s) screed – the author’s bullying attempt to make me disbelieve the evidence of my own eyes or his assumption that he has the moral right to do so. Only a devoted liberal could write such dangerous nonsense…”

I wish I’d taken screenshots of comments threads on similar G&M articles from five or six years ago, because the opinions expressed then were almost the opposite – they essentially recited the politically correct gospel, like they were members of a brainwashed cult. Anyone who’s read online G&M comments years ago knows what I’m talking about.
    Trappedintrudeaupia (2:33): Yes.

  12. Here in NB bell tries to keep the SNN out. That worked for a while lo and behold Shaw Direct came to the rescue. My call to bell express vu canceled my sub at end date in 3 weeks and I am looking forward to SNN in very near future.BTW Sun News is a regular not extra cost.

  13. Actually, I have been watching Sun news recently. I have to say, I find it boring and repetitive, but then I feel the same way about CNN/CBC/CTV news channels. A half hour is all I can take; then every thing seems to repeat. (And, geez, if I see one more commercial for Marineland or cheapo life insurance, I’m going to be sick!)
I must add that when I have watched Adler or Levant, they are more polite and respectful to their guests (such as actually letting the guest answer a question, instead of cutting them off), even if they are challenging their views, than lefty shills like Olbermann or Matthews. I’m going to miss Count Floyd too; whenever Lisa Laflamme mentions people like Bachman, Palin, or Perry, the contempt virtually drips out of her mouth. When will she realize she’s just a jumped-up bingo caller, and no one is watching for her opinions?

  14. @ KevinB: all news is repetitive. However I have been watching SUNTV more than I watch other TV (I never watch TV otherwise) and I have found the interviews to be interesting and well conducted really. And they do interview anyone not just right wingers. Levant spends some of his time hating stuff the Conservatives are doing so it isn’t rally around the flag either.

  15. Caplan. The same G. Caplan that used to appear with Kirby and Segal as a “political pundit” on Sunday tv.
Back then, I wasn’t sure what pundit meant. I looked it up – and imagine my surprise when I found out it did NOT mean ‘fart-catcher’.

  16. It seems that Canadians when given a choice would rather see the news unfiltered and know what is happening. Given the choice most prefer steak to pablum.

  17. EBD, I used to post on the Globe and Mail site, so I know what you mean. I was QUITE surprised to read the comments after Caplan’s piece of garbage!

  18. The Sun is overtly populist and anti-elitist, so it’s no mystery why elites are bitter over the Sun’s success – and one would have to search abroad to find a more bitter resentful establishment elite than Caplan.

  19. “I read some posts saying people like us, ‘the mean right wingers’ are afraid of islam. Really? And here I thought I just depised the bast*rds.” Terry @ 8:04am
Disgusted is the word that always pops into my head.

  20. Like others here who are unable to find a decent Cable Co., I watch Sun News online – I never watch CTV or CBC unless i have an empty stomach and have a morbid curiosity to see what the fabrication spinners are doing. I visit SDA and stream Sun TV for any Canadian news or opinion I wish to view. I am still gloating about the Troika (liberano/Blochead/Dipper) rout in the last election – I can almost smell the rubber burning as the brohdasters spin on their own phlegm. Revolting but amusing.
Norhwestel is run by good ittle commies (as is the gument on all three levels), here in the Yukon. They claim o be unaware of Sun TV – yet they have NTV and Opera – they have an agenda and they think they are on the winning team. Dinosaurs and Fools; they are.

  21. Curiously enough, Ezra has the No. 3-rated show on Sun TV.
First is Brian Lilley, second Charles Adler.

  22. I miss Theo Caldwell. I thought he had the freshest programme on air, better than Adler, Lilley and Levant – very original and extremely intelligent. That’s not to take away from any of the three.
Anyone know why he was canned?

  23. I find I can sleep well now that Sun is battering the MSM.
Put that up your nose Tabor.
