A thought occurred to me tonight as I caught up on the news. With a double dip recession now barreling towards his 2012 re-election campaign, might Obama be looking for a way to shift responsibility for the dismal economy to the Republicans (and in particular, those tea bagger extremists)?
“Bush’s fault” is wearing really thin. He needs a new villain. And a new big event.
Because from where I sit, it’s looking more and more to me that the White House wants the Default Deadline of Doom to come and go without a resolution. And there’s only one reason why – because he thinks he can use it to political advantage.
But, YMMV.
Update: Marco Rubio in the senate.

Obama be looking for a way to shift responsibility for the dismal economy to the Republicans
No Republican Congressman are up for election in 2012, the House elections were last November.
Senate elections yes, but the Senate is majority Democrat.
There is only one 2 horse race that Americans nation wide can vote on and hold one man accountable for their pain in 2012 and that’ll be the Presidential race.
Casting off blame isn’t going to get Barry re-elected.
The American people want solutions and Barry hasn’t presented any.
They’ll be looking for someone who will say, “Follow me if you want to live.”
Obama has already proven he isn’t that guy.
Oz, House of Representatives elections are every two years.
So this is what it feels like to be caught in a train wreck.
Thanks Phil, I was confused about that.
The point I was trying to make was that Americans aren’t going to hold their individual congressman responsible when the President hasn’t been leading.
“”The point I was trying to make was that Americans aren’t going to hold their individual congressman responsible “”
well actually many will,
if enough could be hoodwinked into voting for the “great follower” the first time, who knows what 2012 will bring
never sell collective stupidity short
Kate, your theory is precisely what ET said here. I think it bears much credence!
Obama was trying to split the House Republicans; I don’t think he won..He is a loser anyway you frame the debacle of the last three weeks. His only goal now may be to get Democrat support for reelection, he could be dumped from the ticket….
Tuesday will come and go without much REAL fanfare, what ever decision they make will only last until October….Smoke & Mirrors
Funny about that phony rating downgrade..
What is this inept administration trying to divert attention from? There must be something far bigger, coming down the street than this default for this clown to drag the once proud USA through this. Potus and Co., for Phils and Davenports info, has yet to present a BUDGET, how many business people don’t do an annual budget with quarterly updates and course direction changes. This jerk has even lost Hollywood, see the new movie release this week. Thev’e gotten out of their cages, they are smarter than we think. In over his head by a mile.
But I heard that Bill Maher said the debt WAS Bush’s fautlt… so it must be true… right?!?
It is becoming more and more apparent that Obama is a real Manchurian candidate. He has done nothing to help the average American and everything to screw up the country. My brother lives in wisconsin and hates Obama with a passion. I really think he is trying to keep the USA down for his political advantage as previously said.
“It is becoming more and more apparent that Obama is a real Manchurian candidate.”
No kidding!
No matter what happens, Obama will not be reelected unless he is declared new Dictator of the USSA or something…The guy is absolutely detested more than polls are saying IMO. If he is looking for a scapegoat like the TEA Party to mobilize Americans back to him will only turn the backlash again’st himself that much more…Many Americans have awaken since the election of 2008 and Washington is viewed much differently since then; and the eyes on not only on the Democratic party either. A revolution is simmering IMO.
All I am going to say about the possible “Big event” that might be coming down the wire is this:
-Keep an eye on the IMF and the Federal Reserve with Soetoro actions as a possible trigger.
Bambam is toast. Snowballs have better odds. That said, why would a Republican, other than a Rino, want to be POTUS when the world ends?
There is no way out of this mess short of a very nasty depression. They can trigger it immediately by cutting spending or they can try to kick it down the road by continuing the spending spree. There are too many fingers of instability for the latter to work for very long. The entire world is rife with potential problems that could trigger an implosion.
Neither party has the gonads to tackle the problems head-on and cause a severe depression. Both prefer to have an external event cause the collapse, thereby saving their political skins. Only then could they start “reviving” the economy, the Dems pushing their Marxism and the tea party offering capitalism under a gold standard.
The Dems offer only more misery. The Tea Party offer a future based on the principles that made the US the most successful experiment on earth.
scapegoat time?
a leader facing unpopularity before an election?
get ready for another war !!!
IS he trying to garner political advantage….fer shure!….but that isnt everything thats going on. This is combined with Obama’s arrogance that he knows best, which gives you the source of the plan, and his incompetence. Goodnees this guy is a bad negotiator, no wonder the Israeli’s don’t trust him at all.
Finally, is he trying to intentionally ruin the US. I dont think so, I dint think he cares about many of the same things, but being the self indulgent goof that he is he wants all the good things about US power with none of the responsibilities. Just like he likes being Head of State but not HEad of Government.
I do not believe his interests or vision are the same as most Americans, but I dont think he is trying to ruin (maybe I better say I dont want to believe he is trying to ruin)
It really is an unthinkable scenario with some very unpleasant implications and consequences. Both for the US and for Mr Obama personally.
“he thinks he can use it to political advantage”
Yes “ymmv”. There are a lot of “known unknowns” out there as Rummy would say. While we do know that shaving cream works well if you aren’t that hairy; the economy has become very hairy. No growth to reduce the 9.2% unemloyment. That will not be a poltical advantage to Obama. The freshman, tea party Congressmen will get better mileage than the Obamarx gang on the hairy economy.
Not that we want a villain or doom to win, it would be preferable to win based on the idea of smaller government and more free market capitalism.
“…”Bush’s fault” is wearing really thin…”
Nawwww, I think it takes longer than that…at leasrt in Canada it does.
The spoiled sissies in Ontario’s Unions still drag out Mike Harris (9 years ago)as the boogey-man while they’ve obviously forgiven/forgot Bob Rae (16 years ago).
I concede however, that in the case of Bobby “coat of many colours” Rae, the unions’ natural affection for all things on the left washed away more of his sins than did Father Time.
Rubio is brilliant. Really worth a listen.
Future POTUS if he doesn’t blow it in some stupid scandal.
“Because from where I sit, it’s looking more and more to me that the White House wants the Default Deadline of Doom to come and go without a resolution.”
Odd, though, that while the President, the Democratic congressional leadership, and the Republican congressional leadership have all demonstrated a willingness to compromise in order to solve the debt ceiling issue, the “Tea Party” faction is the only group in Washington refusing to budge and thereby essentially holding all bipartisan negotiations hostage. So instead of the bolder bipartisan plans from a few weeks ago that would have led to larger spending cuts, the US is now left in this late hour with weak partisan plans that call for fewer reductions and (again) kick the can down the road.
Looks like the blame for the debt ceiling lunacy is falling more or less precisely where it should.
The end result of believing in socialist economics is always the same.
It could be called Greek Disease but Obama Disease is a more current name.
Would you clowns stop using “Manchurian” please?? The Zero is a muzzie,non-American,egotist bent on destroying the USA for his buddies in Wahabieland. He is a Jack Layton/NDPer in black clothes.
First of all the August 2 deadline is completely bogus. The (cough) President (cough) set it as a deadline so he could beat his opponents with it. Secondly old couch doesn’t understand compromise. What the democrats have been calling compromise is shorthand for republican surrender. The democrats haven’t changed their position one iota. They are simply rewording their original tax and spend policy to fool the American public.
to be fair, Justthinkin, I think the Bush family has far more friends in Arabia than The Zero. And I would argue that they were very damaging to America’s future as well.
I think that Zero is simply incompetent, and his policies are really his, but those of the enablers who put him in
Yes, he is a failure. But the real problem is that his enormous ego, fed by a lifetime of affirmative action based self-validation, up to and including being handed the most important job in the world, will lead him to take any measure up to and including willful destruction of his nation, to avoid being forced into the realization of his failure. To a narcissist, being forced to admit his failure is akin to suicide, and will be resisted at all cost, no matter who has to suffer.
Whoops, edit:
I think that Zero is simply incompetent, and his policies are really NOT his, but those of the enablers who put him in
old lori – yes, I agree that Obama’s policies are not his but those of his handlers. He’s a pathological narcissist and his personal agenda is: Power. This means that he must deprive other people of power, i.e., their wealth, their freedom, their independent reasoning.
How he achieves this control over others is irrelevant to him. He is psychologically a socialist because that ideology sets him up as a superior Ruler over the Ruled. So, yes, that pathological narcissism means that he will even destroy the nation to prevent his losing power and being, viewed, by himself, as a failure.
Davenport – I’m going to repeat some of my previous points on another thread. Are you aware that the Democrats REFUSED to vote on the Ryan Budget, the GOP Cut, Cap and Balance, and the GOP’s most recent offer? Are you aware that Obama mocked Ryan and his budget, insulting Ryan to his face, and announced that he would VETO the two bills passed in the House by the GOP? So – how’s that for compromise?
Obama has only one goal; his power over others and his re-election. His agenda is to BUY his re-election, by expanding the Dependent Class (dependent on govt funding). This class is made up of the unionized public service (Obama’s Stimulus was geared to preserving their jobs and wasn’t meant for ‘shovel-ready’ private enterprise)..and the exploding ratio of people who pay no taxes but live off social security, unemployment and other benefits. I’d include the illegals in this set and Obama’s agenda (DREAM) is to bring them into his following.
To do this, Obama needs to increase the deficit AND the debt ceiling to expand the entitlement programs. And, he wants more money; I’m betting that he wants to give all his following some special benefit during his campaign this fall/next year.
Obama would, in my view, actually like a default; remember, Obama influences people by emotional manipulation ..Remember his Hope and Change, his oceans ceasing to rise, his Pass the Stimulus or the Economy Will Tank; his Pass ObamaCare or doctors will cut off your limbs for money. And note how he divides people into ethnic groups (Hispanics – fight your enemies!); into race; into political partisans. Obama enjoys sitting back and watching groups fight each other..
Obama would like a default so that he can blame his newest enemy: the Tea Party. Obama considers them a threat to his re-election..and his re-election is all that matters.
But – think about the rhetoric against the Tea Party – that they are hardline radicals. WHAT? What is radical about wanting limited government, reduced taxation..and a…think about it..a balanced budget.
But – to say those two words: BALANCED BUDGET..to a Democrat, and they fall over as if zapped by an evil curse.
These axioms of the Tea Party: its focus on fiscal responsibility, not spending more than you take in, reducing taxation to enable INVESTMENT within and by the private sector…and balancing your budget. These are simple, basic ordinary commonsense!!!! What’s radical?
What I find evil – and I use the word with intent – is the bland careless agenda of ‘living-in-the-red’; of constantly living, not on what you earn but on what you can borrow. Oh – and you have no intention of paying it off. heck no, your children and grandchildren can do that. Now – is that responsible? Is that mature? Is that right..to do that to the future generation?
This Obama-Democrat Gang have one focus: Power. They use entitlements and ‘freebies’ to ensnare a passive, increasingly dependent following. They deliberately destroy the middle class, the small businessman (who are in that 200,000 income range, a range that Obama redefines as ‘a millionaire). They are sucking up all the wealth/profit of these small businesses and thus preventing INVESTMENT and preventing more hiring, preventing expansion of these businesses. Why?
They want the money..to give to CONSUMERS. But an economy that CONSUMES all its wealth and doesn’t INVEST it…is finished.
That’s Obama. The Tea Party, on the other hand, is based on commonsense, realism, and responsibility. So, kindly tell us, davenport, how the Tea Party is blocking this issue.
Can’t believe the “new deal” being brokered includes raising the debt ceiling enough so Obama the Hun can slide through the next election without facing the question again.
That’s all he wanted, let’s just bend over one more time…
One related thought…..if Harry Reid is so upset about The Debt Ceiling Increase being held hostage to other items, then I welcome his conversion to banning earmarks and log rolling, two time honored traditions of congress.
But that would be asking for consistency
The indonesian has somethig up his many sleeved coat.
I’ve encountered this crisis engineering theory before, i.e. Obama wants a crisis so as to be able to, in the eyes of some, recapitulate the campaign memes of 2008. And no doubt some gullible fools would swallow it.
With Obama, it’s so hard to know. “Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity” comes to mind. Or equally, he may be sufficiently happy cocooned in his own little Barry-and-Michelle world that, as long as Martha’s Vineyard and Airforce One are at his disposal, and there’s another fete planned, then “Apres moi, le deluge” is the order of the day or year. As long as he gets re-elected and his parties can continue, the price to be paid by the peasants for his inattention or incompetence may simply be, to him, irrelevant.
His handlers on the other hand . . .
Obama’s response to the debt-ceiling debate is what community organizers are trained to do namely agitate, polarize, deflect blame and condemn which define his entire failed presidency.
What I find evil – and I use the word with intent – is the bland careless agenda of ‘living-in-the-red’; of constantly living, not on what you earn but on what you can borrow.
– ET.
That, my good woman, is one of your most powerful sentences here, and your “living in the red” is a singularly choice phrase. Yes, that’s the thing: this isn’t about numbers, ledgers, debit and credits. This is a question of character. Sadly, our political class merely reflects the debased character of the citizenry at large.
old lori: Superb comment on the dynamics of a narcissit. In a long-ago exchange with ET on this subject I mentioned something I came across in my reading: a narcissist’s “supply” (of approval). Loss of “supply” is nuclear. I was once on the receiving end of a narcissist’s loss of supply.
Repeating myself here: did you know that “narcissistic personality disorder” has been removed from the DSM (Diagnostic Statistical Manual). That speaks to cultural debasement, what?
If budgets can be suspended, can an election be?
I know, I know: that’s pretty fevered paranoia. But today, all contingencies must be considered.
Great comment DrD! You are a master of the succinct.
This deal will get done, but the Democrats Political Calculation is that they can damage the Tea Party for simply the reasons that Davenport said earlier. They have framed the debate that way.
If you ever want to know how a debate is politically defined on the left simply listen to Senator Chuck Schumer who is the message guy for the Dems.
The “Plot” is that Dems will seem like they have not been obstructionist because they have no plan or starting point in the debt negotiations(it is easy to seem like you are the one to compromise when you have no opening position), and as such they could not possibly be putting forth hardline changes in policy like the House GOP has.
They have become the party of “Status Quo” which they have called the GOP for years. Remember Obama is the Hope and Change President, the Dems are all Doom and sacred cows right now, so who really is blocking the changes that all politicians say are needed?
illiquid assets – the Democrats are the party of zero: no policies, no budget, no plans. As Rubio said.
Did anyone notice John Kerry’s attempt to deflect the justified criticism by Rubio, of Obama and Biden, who both in 2006 strongly voiced and voted against raising the debt ceiling, as did Reid in 2007? Well, Biden interrupted Rubio to say that ‘well, those guys knew that what they were saying had no chance of getting a passing vote’…so their comments were just symbolic..
Now wait a minute. Is Kerry saying that Obama, Biden and Reid were not sincere in 2006-7 in their rejection of a debt ceiling increase? That they didn’t mean what they said? That it was pure theatrical politics?
And isn’t Kerry ignoring that this debt ceiling, which would have been clearly known about last year when the Democrats controlled all three branches of govt..(even though they haven’t had a budget since Obama’s taking over)..well, couldn’t the Dems have increased the debt ceiling last August? Last October? Even last December? WHY didn’t they do this when they could have? Why?
Was it to operate, as Obama always does, within the apocalyptic hysteria of emotion? Obama is not a president; he’s a campaigner; that’s all he can do – exhort others to follow Him. He’s not interested in policies and programs; he’s interested only in Power.
Obama’s 2008 campaign was based on vacuous emotion. His bills were passed within apocalyptic hysteria (pass the stimulus without reading or debate or the economy will collapse; pass health care or the doctor will cut off your limbs for more money..).
And with the rise of the Tea Party, the party of calm commonsense, Obama has moved into pure apocalyptic hysteria. He needs to vilify the Tea Party. He’s tried – he’s tried to vilify any and all criticism of him, tried to get FOX barred from the Press Room, smeared the Tea Party…but it’s still there and commonsense is powerful. Obama needs a crisis..and I maintain that this debt ceiling is a deliberate ploy; he WANTS a default so that he can blame the Tea Party.
The problem is – I don’t think it’s working. It’s known that the US revenue will cover the major bills: interest, entitlements etc..But, Obama isn’t interested in that – he needs to incite fear.
And – I also maintain that Obama wants a tax increase to enable him to buy his re-election; he’s got to offer ‘special bonuses’ to his dependents…
What is often overlooked are the elephants in the room. I have no answers just questions.
While unemployment is alleged to be circa 9%, for young blacks it is 40+%…..
About 50% of the US pays NO INCOME tax..and are naturally indifferent to tax increases…..but a source of resentment to those who do pay taxes.
While US gasoline is cheaper than here in the GREAT WHITE NORTH…..there is mega resentment about current US pump prices….
There is a lot of resentment to the “cult of personality” constantly advanced by the MSM.
The US military and veterans represent a very unhappy “silent” element….demographically larger than the ethnic minorities.
Political events in Wisconsin are having a immense influence on the pushback to DEM/SEIU politics. Wisconsin faced a deficit but now has a SURPLUS. This is suppressed by the MSM but is check by jowl with the leftist disaster, that is Illinois,….hence easily disseminated by “word of mouth”.
This debt crisis appears to be a deliberate “Reichstag Fire”.
“Gun-Walker” like “Climate-Gate” despite media suppression is getting out…..
It appears the Dept of Education has at least one SWAT SQUAD..???? How many more covert paramilitary formations is this administration maintaining on the public purse? WHY? For what purpose?
Is this the “civilian security force” that OBmuggabe proposed during 2008….”as large and well equiped as the military”? Is this an SS/SD or Besiji force?
“US GDP report for the second-quarter was expected to be 3.3%. That had been revised down to 2.7%, with the actual percentage at 1.3%. Normally, at this time in a recovery we are growing at close to 3 times that number, or 3.6%. The 1st quarter of this year was revised down from 1.9% to 0.36%. The 4th quarter of 2010 was taken down from 3.1% to 2.35%!”
This is the real state of the US economy. It is dying and yet McParland is criticizing the Taxed Enough Already congressmen daring to suggest that the US government live within its means. Obama and his supporters want to increase the debt ceiling by 2.4 TRILLION dollars and just until November 2012 when it will be increased again and again adding over $20 trillion dollars to the US debt while promising, maybe, to reduce spending by $2-3 trillion dollars over this 10 year projection. Kelly, this is the actual fantasy world! And by the way the Democrat controlled House, Congress and then the Presidency never passed a budget in the last 3 years.
As we see with Ford in Toronto with increasing attacks on him for just examining POTENTIAL cuts the public unions, special interest groups like the arts, homeless industry or OCAP sees tax money as theirs and woe onto anyone daring to cut the “gravy train”.
http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2011/07/30/kelly-mcparland-tea-partiers-demand-an-unworkable-law-for-their-fantasy-world/
OzerO’s greatest problem, to implementing his strategy, happens to be the internet
“And – I also maintain that Obama wants a tax increase to enable him to buy his re-election; he’s got to offer ‘special bonuses’ to his dependents…”
Close, ET, but not quite. It’s more machiavellian and a bigger slam-dunk than vote buying: Maobama knows if the repubs cave to a tax increase, this will spawn a massive comnserevative/tea party schism and likely a 3rd party, guaranteeing the marxist’s re-election.
mhb23e
Give Obama the money or he’s gonna whack the old folks!
It appears that a deal has been done. A dollar in cuts for every dollar of debt ceiling increase – the money delivered (borrowed/printed) in two stages and no worries for a new discussion about it until after the 2012 election. Looks to me as if Obama got pretty much everything he really wanted the most.
Moody’s will be disappointed. The tea party will be incensed and the debt will continue to grow. 1 for 1 on a deficit along with the interested doesn’t exactly pay anything down.
I can’t help but think that Obama actually has a pretty good shot at getting to continue his reign of fiscal terror. Bad for the US, bad for us in Canada and bad in general for the world economic situation. Good news for the GOP person who would have taken over the mess is about the only positive thing I can say.
It was entertaining to hear Ralph Goodale the self-important buffoon on the radio today delivering a lecture to Jim Flaherty on preparing the economy for an American default.
Someone should remind Ralph that he is an irrelevant fool in an irrelevant political party and all Canadians would be better served if he would just keep his stupidity within his own little constituency and let the responsible adults sort things out.
Kate – Obama does want to cause as much pain as possible in the hope he can hang the people’s anger around Republican necks. They know this, and will give some ground to the Dems, but the final bill will have no tax increases, and ostensibly some cuts. They can let the Dems argue for and get a bill that does not reverse the budgetary status quo, as long it’s clear they are on the sane side and the Dems are clearly for the unsustainable Obama spending blowout . Dick Morris believes Obama’s disgraceful handling of this will leave him permanently at an approval level in the low 40% range.
ET: “Are you aware that the Democrats REFUSED to vote on the Ryan Budget, the GOP Cut, Cap and Balance, and the GOP’s most recent offer? Are you aware that Obama mocked Ryan and his budget, insulting Ryan to his face, and announced that he would VETO the two bills passed in the House by the GOP? So – how’s that for compromise?”
In what way does simply accepting whole-hog any of those Republican-designed plans without any negotiations and amendments meet the definition of “compromise”? A process in which one side proposes a plan, the other side rejects it but counter-offers, and then the two sides reach some kind of middle-ground (i.e., what Obama and Boehner tried to do a few weeks ago, and what Reid and McConnell are doing right now)– THAT would be compromise.
The fact that Democrats are willing to countenance cuts to major entitlement programs is already a major concession on their part, and shows a openness to meeting half-way. Unfortunately, the continued unwillingness of the GOP side to consider even modest tax increases — despite the numbers suggesting that significant debt reduction is next to impossible without some kind of revenue increase, and despite the US already being among the lowest-taxed developed countries in the world (theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/international-news/us/tax-revenue-as-a-percentage-of-gdp-in-the-developed-world/article2114914/?from=2114872) — is what’s going to ruin the US economy in the long-run.
To those on the left who think it is a good idea to raise the debt limit, can you answer one simple question: what is the absolute limit beyond which you would not further indebt the US Treasury?
Bingo! As the USMSM reports the Dems are winning the debt PR
Posted by: Davenport at July 31, 2011 1:53 PM
The US doesn’t have a tax revenue problem, simpleton, it has a SPENDING problem. Last year the Great Socialist TRIPLED the final Bush deficit. Yeah, tripled it. Worse yet, the “stimulus” spending (of which only 6% went to “shovel ready” jobs, and the rest bailed out union pensions and was laundered back into democrat party coffers) was ADDED to the baseline, so any so-called “cuts” are meaningless, which is why the bond raters aren’t pleased. Sort of like planning to gain 50 lbs but only gaining 40, and when somebody says, “Gee, you put on weight, Joe” you reply, “Naw, I actually LOST 10 lbs”
“… continued unwillingness of the GOP side to consider even modest tax increases”
Yeah, Dopeyport, raising taxes in a brutal recession is always a recipe for success, isn’t it? Ask Bob Rae about that one. The US needs more taxpayers, not higher taxes: 48% of the country pay no tax at all. How much more “shared sacrifice” on the backs of the wealth producers does a sociotard like obama need, davenport?
It’s been proven – over and over again – reducing taxes increases government revenue: Bush II, Reagan, even JFK proved it. Yet all the marxists and other class-warfare tools like obama focus on is destroying the wealth producers with punitive taxes.
Oh, yeah. And “corporate jets” – that Tourette-like parroting by the Moron in Chief; gotta tax those, too.
Before posting more tripe, davenport, why not read a bit of economic theory? You might not look quite so ignorant, that way. Suggest Hazlett’s “Economics in One Lesson”, and Sowell’s “Basic Economics”, Adam Smith’s “Wealth of Nations”, and Friedman’s “Free to Choose” as a start. Then come back – or don’t, that’d be OK too – and try to add something useful to the thread.
mhb23re
People out there should do more research obama and george soros are in there glory george put him in power to ruin the american econimy every thing is going acording to plan at this rate they are not taking a chance on him not winning a second term.Read alittle about george dont beleive what you see this is all about one wold gov.
davenport – how did Obama compromise? He said, before the Cut, Cap and Balance that he would veto it. That’s hardly a discussion or compromise.
Equally, the Democrats tabled all the House bills (that had been passed); they refused to debate or discuss them. Just threw them out. How is that negotiation?
And, if Obama and the Democrats were serious about the debt, then, why didn’t they address the problem back before Nov 2010 when they controlled all three branches of govt? After all, this situation wasn’t new; it was well-known then. Why didn’t Obama and the Democrats simply pass their debt increase back then? Well?
Obama hasn’t offered a plan; the Democrats didn’t offer a plan. Did the Democrats in the House offer one? No; they waited for the GOP in the House to come up with one.
Reid’s plan is a joke; do you think that ‘cuts’ which include ‘savings’ from not being in the two wars – are genuine cuts?
What cuts to ‘genuine entitlement programs’? Which ones? Please tell us.
And kindly prove that raising taxes on the productive sector of the population actually functions as ‘significant debt reduction’. The figures reject this; as others have pointed out, you could tax this segment 100% and it wouldn’t make a dent. The way to deal with the debt is to CUT SPENDING.
AND..
LOWER TAXES. Lowering taxes means that the productive sector of the economy (that’s the private sector) has the funds to INVEST and thus PRODUCE goods and services. Revenues would increase…but..above all, the state has to reduce its spending.
Do you think that an economy should have 73% of its income tax revenue from only 10% of its population and that 47% should pay no taxes..but..live off the benefits of tax programs? How economically viable is that model?
What Reid was doing was outlining what Obama wants: Obama wants more money now and until after his re-election; he doesn’t want anything to interfere with his re-election. And he wants money..that he can spend on his electoral base during his campaign. Now – is that an agenda in the national interest or is it a political agenda?
Mises has some interesting analysis. and solutions:

chesterfield:
Not sure if anybody had mentioned this before, but Senate majority leader Harry Reid agreed to a package that had no tax increases.
Apparently, that’s also at odds with the one who stopped the rise of the oceans.
So, if the two Republican plans from the House of Representatives have no tax increases and the Democratic Senate majority leader has also agreed that there should be no tax increases …
And, if the only party who is holding out for tax increases is Obama, then which party is incapable of compromise?
In this case, it appears all Obama has neglected to do it stomp his feet and hold his breath. He’s certainly not in line with either elected body in Congress.
Obama is the guy who’s on the outside looking in, the guy who’s going against the will of the people (Tea Party representatives elected by the people last November).
He’s already yesterday’s man and a total lame duck. He’ll be voted out by the people next November and rightfully so, since he’s totally out of touch with the voter.
