  1. Stewart speaks for no one. His show is scripted farce and it is painfully obvious that he was desperate in this little interview to sideline any serious discussion. His lack of understanding and outright stupidity is evident … might as well interview Whoopie Goldberg.
    The only thing that is stupider is expecting anything of substance from this sort of exchange.

  2. It was great TV, like when Stewart was dealing with Wiener, his friend. Anyway I found Stewart’s replies pretty competent but I note that in the few sites I’ve seen commenting about the interview opinions are pretty set to pre-existing patterns, right-wingers think Wallace had the best of it, left wingers think Stewart did. So confirmation bias rules at least.

  4. Would you agree that the largest hurdle for the conservative movement is shedding the reputation (deserved in many cases) of being “out of touch” with mainstream society?

    Basically, although I’d expand that a little. It’s not that conservatives need to try desperately to be hip and with it – there’s few things sadder than seeing someone try to force that. We’ve ceded so much ground to the left over the past few decades (I suspect it started in the ’30s and not the ’60s, but that’s just a hunch) that notions which would have been laughed off as self-evidently ludicrous quite recently, like our current tax rates, gay “marriage” – make your own list – are now “the reasonable middle”. This is why the Tea Party gives me some hope; I mean, who cares if the President, House and Senate are all Republican if Republican means “Democrat Lite if you’re lucky”? So yes, we have to take back the culture, but in a big way; “making the kids laugh” isn’t enough. Basically, we’re too nice; as Shaidle has pointed out, the left took the culture by being aggressive, shocking, energetic and “uncivil”; we won’t take it back by being polite and crossing our fingers that David Frum gets invited to the right cocktail parties.
    That being said, I consider South Park right-wing rather than otherwise, and we can agree, along with KevinB (but not alas johnbrooks), that it’s the funniest thing on TV. My stereotype of lefties was always that they were petty and humourless (possibly a by-product of reading everything P.J. O’Rourke published in my early teens).

  5. Of course this is why it matters so much that conservatives are forced to stay “in the closet” in the entertainment industry. A horrible number of people get their ideas about what’s cool and what’s smart from movies an TV shows. (People as hung up on politics as your average political blog habitue tend to forget that most people don’t really care about political ideas; at most they have a few cliches floating around in their heads.) Or maybe it doesn’t matter that much; Hollywood isn’t as important as it used to be.

  10. johnbrooks – look, South Park is vulgar, obscene, blasphemous, scatological and sometimes even vicious. If that’s all it was then I’d hate it. It is also hilarious. In fact, in it’s own way, it’s quite… human. Contast it to the occasionally witty but consistanly immature, shallow and ugly work of Seth McFarlane. I’m sorry if that hurts your brain but sometimes life is complimicated like that.
    “It was funny but like other things, its time has passed.” – you’re thinking of The Simpsons. South Park has been getting better for a decade.

  13. Thanks Mamba, I’ve been trolling on G&M of late. I’ll check-it out.
    WRT to your point, I’m not saying “makem laugh”, I’m saying many conservatives (typically social) are out of touch with our N.America culture; and they’re killing us politically. Period! For example, most religious folk that are not “outta touch” likely vote Democrat; whereas those that vote Republican are “outta touch”(see blacks and Hispanics).
    It’s the obtuseness of the conservatives that alienates mainstream society, as they feel enlightened enough to dictate what good humor, music and art is. You know, the important stuff in life. You’ve seen the reaction in the past when I’ve shared my views on music and culture. I’ve been called a “Leftist Idiot” here before(if I’m Left, then gawd help us). Hell, if I wasn’t a political junkie, what are the odds I’d be swinging Right? So long as these idiots continue to “judge books by covers”, fools they will make us all look. S.Colberts caricature of conservatives is very accurate in many ways. His instinctive “I don’t read books, I judge by covers” is a very accurate depiction of social conservatives when it comes to fiction(art). We may have the monopoly on non-fiction, but we’re pop-culture retards.
    My last example is the over-reaction of social conservatives to the book “The Da Vinci Code”. This is a microcosm of the idiocy on the right that shames me, and holds us back. Personally, they could have saved their ire for the movie, but I digress.
    I’ve quoted this before, but I live by it, and it should be repeated:

    I’m not saying John Brooks is a “fool” generally, but his limited criteria for what he deems funny is “foolish” as he closes himself off to many great things. To quote Bart Simpson, when Milhouse asked “who are the Beatles?” Bart said “They’re the guy that wrote all of the children’s songs”. I assume you get my point Mamba, though it’s likely lost on John Brooks, which is my point. John Brooks is exactly why I said this: “someone like JS suffers from the same bigotry as the rest of the Left, and is likely more concerned about not being associated with us, than being correct on any particular political issue.”
    BTW, I enjoyed the older South Park episodes (generally) more, as I feel they’re “forcing-it” trying now to be political(just like Lupe Fiasco). I like the “kids being kids” stuff as opposed to the parents being the main characters.
    Also, pls tell me you took my advice and watched “A Game of Thrones” on HBO. If not, read the book first!!! Other than that, I’d love to hear your comments on the show, or excuses.
    This show deserves an SDA thread.

  14. Indiana, by quoting Bart Simpson digresses the topic to a cartoon narrative.
    Reminds me of the cop I saw once park really bad, had his rear end sticking out into the parking lot.
    I said to him, good parking, to which he got all righteous and said “now hold on a moment”.
    Like I said, the time of cartoon shock mentality has past.
    Not attacking personally, seeing you point me out, but do you still read comics?

  15. I don’t get a chance to watch Jon Stewart except in short clips on the net, so I haven’t built an opinion of him. Watching this interview, my respect for him would be quite high. Obviously intelligent, very well spoken, stays on track. If there would be a ‘winner’ in an interview, he’s it.
