Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

"I got so much traffic after your post my web host asked me to buy a larger traffic allowance." - Dr.Ross McKitrick
Holy hell, woman. When you send someone traffic, you send someone TRAFFIC.My hosting provider thought I was being DDoSed. - Sean McCormick
"The New York Times link to me yesterday [...] generated one-fifth of the traffic I normally get from a link from Small Dead Animals." - Kathy Shaidle
"You may be a nasty right winger, but you're not nasty all the time!" - Warren Kinsella
"Go back to collecting your welfare livelihood." - Michael E. Zilkowsky
Consider PMSH as a beacon of hope for the Anglosphere? Cool concept indeed.
Most amusing line in the piece:
The separatists now have just four seats in the Commons … “no-one should be lamenting the demise of a party that has as many different words for grievance as the Inuit do for snow”.
I wonder if this chap would like to immigrate to Canada. We could sure use him. He definitely calls a spade a spade.
We need Mr. Hannan in the USA, and soon.
One thing to be cautious of (from the comments).
The loony left will try attempt to destabilize Canada with its call for proportional representation.
First past the post and sum of local constituencies, in the British tradition, provides the most stability.
With proportional representation, you would see many more parties than the fading Libs and BQ. And, worse, there would be less focus on the people’s needs on a local level.
Listen carefully and take this as your warning. Do not be suckered by arguments for proportional representation.
You’ll be hearing a lot of that agitation from the NDP.
I’ve seen it a dozen times now, and it still causes my heart to race.
The open & honest discussion of Proportional Representation (PR) has never occurred in Canada. To detect the disingenuous nature of its proponents, just ask this simple question:
“No system is perfect. Put your bias aside and tell me, what are the negative aspects of Proportional Representation?”
If you’re talking with a zealot then they’ll say, “None”. If you’re talking with an ignoramus then they’ll say, “I don’t think there are any.”
In both cases, you’ll fail to hear any mention of: Lists, Unremovable Hacks, and a whole lot of Corruption.
Set You Free has a great point about PR….I expect the whining to begin in earnest from the left as well…and you know that shrieking windbag Elizabeth May will be screeching for it first chance she gets, especially since her handout from the gov’t (political subsidies) will be cut soon (or at least it SHOULD be)…
this piece by Hannan also made my heart swell with pride…
They’ll try and spin “social justice” into “voter justice” or some other whiny platitude.
We are safe for at least four years.
The Hanan article must be causing much high blood pressure, anxiety and mayhem in the wine bistros of downtown Toronto.
Such a pleasant thought.
Every time the left loses they scream PR. One person one vote has worked pretty darn well for us and I see no reason to change. Do you think the losers would be pushing PR if they had won? I think not.

The proof will be in the puding. If Harper passes a draconian Anti Human rights bill. We know its just more socialists widdow dressing.
Ooooooh. I can feel my leg tingling.
Not sure what your point it, rev.
If you want to make a friendly wager on Harper’s ‘hidden agenda’ let everybody here know.
Better yet, wouldn’t it be fun to bet any of our lefty friends on any of the ‘hidden agenda’ items their paranoid delusional viewpoint believes Harper will implement.
I’m thinking this is a pretty good opportunity.
FPTP = Fair (only when) Producing True Progressive (pluralities).
Prime Minister Harper will lay down the foundation for Canada’s Century. Great piece of writing.
As for PR. If the porn star starts bangin’ on for PR thats fine. At 43% of the vote in Quebec the dippers should get 32 seats and not 58. Oh and the Conservatives would double from 6 to 12.
………Crickets chirping.
According to Wiki, PEI has a population of 143,500 (2009) and 4 MPs while my riding of Calgary Southeast has a pop. of 125,700 (2006) and 1 MP. Short of tripling the number of MPs or changing the Constitution, there can’t be proportional representation.
Sort of on topic:
See: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/05/07/article-1384734-0BF4175400000578-44_634x1174.jpg
You’ll notic the UK has a simular problem that Canada has with downtown TO. Only a small concetrated portion of the coutnry wanted AV yet their voice is so overplayed in the media you get the misconception that it represents the entire nation.
Banya:
Great point, but what about the other lunatic fringe parties which would pop up.
Kathryn:
That’s a rep by population issue, which is somewhat different that proportional representation.
PR would give each party the same proportion of MP’s as they received percentage of vote.
I say cap the number of MP’s (200 anybody?), then adjust each riding according to population.
I wonder if we can swap Heather Mallick for this fellow. The best article about the conservatives and PMSH,written overseas, says a lot about the state of our media.
Set you free: Lunatic fringe is right. I think the PR would evolve(devolve) into regional parties that would balkanize Canada into three to four separate nations eventually.
Upon further inspection. I for one am now a proponent of PR. 🙂
“The proof will be in the puding.
In point of fact it is the Prof who is in the pudding.
Have fun at U of T Iggy.
“We are safe for at least four years.”
I’d take a bet on that:
http://www.ottawasun.com/2011/05/05/lilley-tory-crime-bill-an-attack-on-our-liberty
These guys have come right out and said that they wouldn’t do anything dramatic (yeah, right think income trusts) – soothing words to some, mostly watermelons, but as a conservative voter I’d like to see the head of the CHRC be found another line of work or farmed out to pasture and the CHRC gone.
I,m not cutting them any slack on the rent from my vote.
Ummmmmmmm..ET where are you? As much as I sometimes disagree with you,at least you bring some balance.Do we need another “chap” here?
We should keep in mind that were it not for the high value of our exports and their relatively easy and low cost of extraction and production and sale. We would be at least as big a financial bust as the UK.
Thankfully these commodities have given us the financial backstop to make changes without huge political upheavals. And now with our rising dollar and hopefully decreasing tax and regulatory burden we will be have both the incentive and the means to improve our productivity levels as they have been lagging our competition since before the days of jean Chretien.
We have indeed been very fortunate that the Calgary school of economics and politics has fathered and fostered the leadership and policies that are now in power at the federal level with a majority mandate. We in Canada have an opportunity to make huge strides over the next four to eight years in making our economy an economic and political powerhouse – an example for all other countries on this planet.
Let’s not squander it.
To do so would be to fail not just ourselves and our offspring, but to fail all of those around the world who are looking to us for leadership and as an example of how to do it right.
It is an epically great time to be a Canadian. Perhaps the twenty-first century will be our century.
You want ET to do your thinking for you, justthinkin?
How bout you toss out your own ideas and see what happens.
Trust yourself.
I really like Daniel Hannan, always speaks very clearly to the root of the problem western countries face.
He wrote about Canada’s military past. I have to wonder if the horrible price in casualties paid by Canada has drained the country of the best and most patriotic people who didn’t get to reproduce and carry on conservative thought to the next generation. As noted in his piece Canada has always turned up in a fight, and we’ve paid dearly for it. Maybe some of our conservative braintrust was buried prematurely in France, Italy and Holland, and we’re only just recovering from that now!
CanuckinMI
I like that thought
It is very likely that conservatives were proportially higher enlisted men.
The other result of the war was a generation of rudderless children, teens in the 60s,hippies and entitled seniors now
What a sickening article. It contains statements that are simply WRONG, like the statement that Canada has not run up spending or debt under Harper-WRONG. Even before the recession, spending was way up, to the point where we’d be in a structural deficit today even without the stimulus.
US GDP to debt approaching 100%.
Canada’s GDP to debt 31% and will be dropping under a Conservative majority government.
Could you please give examples of who’s doing better?
Canada’s GDP to debt 31%
Thanks to the GST, NAFTA, and Paul Martin’s cuts and in spite of Harper’s spending binge
and will be dropping under a Conservative majority government.
I’ll believe it when I see it.
Martin deserves credit for keeping the Canadian banking system stable.
He did, however, steal $25 billion from the UIC fund and cut transfer payments to the provinces to balance his budgets.
That, and the sponsorship scandal, is why the Libs were first send to the penalty box and now into purgatory.
Still waiting for examples of any countries who are doing better.
Do you have a clue, smartypants?
The only thing I’d give Martin credit for was helping to get rid of Chretien.
Martin didn’t stabilize our banking system beyond not imposing a bazillion asinine regulations on it like in America. We pay dearly for the merger block and continued barriers to allowing foreign banks into Canada.
The UIC already consists of ‘stolen’ money, and I’d rather see it go to close up the deficit than distort the labor market. And cutting transfers was a good thing, although I hardly expect a statist like you to understand that.
Why should I have to give examples of countries doing better? How does that matter compared to Harper’s dismal record? Either way, pretty sure Australia and New Zealand are doing better.
you’re so smart, just ask you:
Seems to me proportional representation would be something you’d like.
Correct me if I’m wrong.
Libyia has the best GDP to debt ratio in the world.
Perhaps that would be a good place to consider a move.
Proprep: hmmm…maybe. I don’t like FPTP, but proprep is iffy. I don’t that’s as fundamental as limiting what the government can and can’t do regardless of who votes for who.
Libya? Why not just cry out ‘Somalia!!1’? Ran out of arguments pretty fast there.
When is a politician, of any stripe, going to give this speach in the Parliament of Canada?
I ask.
The proble with our Parlimentry system is the lack of a EEE Senate.
Other than that, the system is fair and works fine. I would argue that seats should be automatically allocated based on population though; not a bill in Parliment.
congradulation for entry of Geert Wilders:
as wikipedea explain life of Geert Wilders

=====================
He is leader of the Party for Freedom
He has responded to charges of racism and Islamophobia by stating, “I don’t hate Muslims. I hate their book and their ideology”.[61]
tall and blond we can compare it with new Harper
look win his words that is reason Israel like him
– train since his youth in Israel
Wilders left the church at his coming of age. His travels to Israel as a young adult,Because he did not have enough money to travel to Australia, his preferred destination, he went to Israel instead.[23] For several years he volunteered in a moshav and worked for several firms, becoming in his own words “a true friend of Israel”.[24] With the money he saved alot of money there Israeli paid him to go to Arabic countries and talk Islamaphobia!!
He compares the Qur’an with Mein Kampf and has campaigned to have the book banned in the Netherlands, He was a speaker at the Facing Jihad Conference held in Jerusalem in 2008, which discussed the dangers of jihad,.that is reason Ezra like him
He advocates ending immigration from Muslim countries, and supports banning the construction of new mosques.visiting countries all across the Middle East, including Iran, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Israel. Liberal Party leader Bolkestein was one of the first Dutch politicians to address mass immigration, and he set an example for Wilders not only in his ideas but also in his confrontational speaking style
he was raised a Roman Catholic. Wilders left the church at his coming of age and he is athism gay. His controversial 2008 film about his views on Islam, Fitna, received international attention. He has been described as populist, freedom of speech and five feet under ground like him.
In January 2009, the Amsterdam Court of Appeal ordered Wilders’ prosecution for “incitement to hatred and discrimination”.[15] Wilders was banned from entering the United Kingdom was joke because later they allow him to visit UK. The ban was overturned after Wilders appealed[17] and he visited the UK in October 2009,[18] and again in March 2010 to show his film.
His father fled the area to escape the Nazis and became so traumatised from the experience that he refused to physically enter Germany even forty years later.!!!!
On 11 September 2010, 2,000 people gathered close by the site of a planned Muslim community center near the site of the World Trade Center attacks, on 11 September 2001, where they were addressed by Wilders who flew from The Netherlands to urge the crowd: “This is where we have draw the line. We must never give a free hand to those who want to subjugate us,” Wilders added. “Draw this line so that New York… will never become New Mecca.”[65]
Wilders was extensively discussed in American diplomatic cables, released by WikiLeaks in December 2010. In a briefing to President Barack Obama, he was described as “no friend of the US: he opposes Dutch military involvement in Afghanistan; he believes development assistance is money wasted; he opposes NATO missions outside ‘allied’ territory; he is against most EU initiatives; and, most troubling, he foments fear and hatred of immigrants.
On foreign relations, Wilders has largely supported Israel and has criticized countries he perceives as enemies of Israel.[25] Furthermore, he has made some proposals in the Dutch Parliament inspired by Israeli policies. For example, he supports implementing Israel’s administrative detention in the Netherlands, a practice heavily criticized by human rights groups, which he calls “common sense”.[80]

Islam is the Trojan Horse in Europe. If we do not stop Islamification now, Eurabia and Netherabia will just be a matter of time. One century ago, there were approximately 50 Muslims in the Netherlands. Today, there are about 1 million Muslims in this country. Where will it end? We are heading for the end of European and Dutch civilisation as we know it. Where is our Prime Minister in all this?
He is another “white trash” got paid to said so
Could somebody please delete new’s comments … and this one.
Harper’s hidden agenda, is the N.A.U. They were just waiting for Harper’s majority. The Federal Reserve Bank is forcing the merger of, Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
There was quite an article in, The Real News Reporter. They say, there is a search for a judge, to try Harper and Peter MacKay for war crimes and crimes against humanity. They say, Harper’s election win was rigged. That part wouldn’t surprise me, because, over half on the Canadiann people, did not want Harper for P.M. They say Harper is a traitor and should be tried for treason.
It sounds like the American citizens, want nothing to do with Canada, and less to do with Mexico. They despise Harper for some reason. It sounds as though, the entire globe will be in union sections, eg. the South American Union and etal. I understand our three country’s currency will be the Amero dollar.
I did not like Harper from day one. He gave me the willies, and, now I know why. Trust Harper? Not on your Nelly!!!!
Holy cripes Linda, I’ve read some crazy stuff on the internet, but you’re in a different league all together.
You have to forgive Linda up there.
It is as though Linda lives in a paralel universe.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Linda; What is a ‘Nelly’? I am not sure that I have one.
Thank-you for this post and link, Kate. The video is an inspiration to all Canadians to live up to the greatness of our ancestors, to appreciate the beautiful nation that we were fortunate enough to inherit from the Greatest Generation and the forefathers of the Greatest Generation. We must know where we came from to understand how we are going to get where we want to go. We are still climbing out of the Liberano Dark Ages but we have already taken some baby steps out of the nursery.
The article, written by Mr. D. Hannan, is high praise, indeed, for our Honorable Prime Minister. Mr. Hannan does not heap praise on unworthy subjects; no fluff here. Congratulations PMSH.
