  1. Here’s one of Jeffrey Simpson’s post-election “teachable moments“:
“Fourth, Quebec political nationalism remains consequential for Canadian federal politics. In the post-Trudeau era, the party that appeals most directly to Quebec nationalism has the best chance of winning in the province, as Brian Mulroney did in 1984 and 1988, the Bloc Québécois thereafter, and now the NDP, with its promise to reopen the Constitution, give more power to Quebec, and to allow Quebec’s language law to trump the Official Languages Act.”
Yes, the Quebec nationalist party was wiped out last night by the NDP because the NDP is the party that “appeals most directly to Quebec nationalism.”
Um, could someone please check Simpson’s vermouth for toxins?

  2. Well it didn’t take long for Bell Tv to act up in such a manner that Sun News is off their programming as of today. Now Im
stranded. Might have known this would happen.

  3. Nope, Jack made some pretty loose promises just to endear himself to Quebec [for that matter, whoever he happens to be talkin’ to at any given time] ie: re-opening Bill 101.
Apparently he’s never heard the saying “don’t let your mouth write a cheque that your ass can’t cash”.
I suspect we’ll be seeing Jack and his merry band of Keystone Knobs stepping from one cow patty to another, to the bemusement of us all.

  4. EBD, that video was funny. Now if only we could get Jack into one of those ejector seats.

  5. Won’t load for me, but there were many lessons dished out last nite, only a very stupid or arrogant person would not look at these results without looking at their mo and questioning it. The granny media has had their wrinkled asses handed to them on a nursing home gurney, Craig Oliver has been in convulsions all day, along with obviously Simpson and to top off the exploded brainless heads, Heather Mallice became mor malevolent from another country, here head spinning wildly around with green vomit spewing forth. This is a great country, it might take a while for some to evolve, but lasst night evolution finally happened to enough to give an HONEST family man, who Cares about Canada, a majority. Go back to the massage parlour Jack, uour irrelevant!

  6. The Liberals got what they deserved. Guys like Chretien, Martin, and Warren Kinsella are what is wrong with the party. These people are the architects of the downfall of the Liberal party. The Liberal party is full of rot from the bottom up. I hope Canadians in the next 4 years finish the job. Refuse to elect any Liberals and finish the job they started.

  7. Ezra Levant is right on with this. They still do it too. Just watch the presser today with a stupid speech question again from the same guy that asked the same speech question in Victoria that I witnessed with my own eyes.

  8. I’m just guessing but I think that within 2 years the CPC will get their election financing reform passed which will totally knee-cap the other parties. There’s no way the Dippers would survive without taxpayer dollars…

  9. Caller to Dennis Miller’s Show today:
“I hear that TLC (The Learning Channel) is going to be giving Navy Seals Team Six their own reality show. It’s going to be called ‘Extreme Home Takeover’!”

  10. …Craig Oliver has been in convulsions all day…
I don’t remember ever telling someone on television to shut up as often as I did oliver on Monday…he looked like his eyeballs were about to fly out from the pressure as he tried to avoid any recognition of the fact that there was going to be a majority Conservative government and he couldn’t do anything about it. With any luck at all, he’ll quit now and good riddance.

  11. …I’m just guessing but I think that within 2 years the CPC will get their election financing reform passed which will totally knee-cap the other parties. There’s no way the Dippers would survive without taxpayer dollars…
two YEARS ??? try two weeks, Flaherty’s already writing it into the budget if he didn’t have it in the real copy already…that was just the pre-election version that he tabled before 😉 we’d best get our 40 million back from the liebrals now, they’ll be bankrupt by the end of the month.

  12. I don’t know which was more amusing last night. The look on Oliver’s face that he was about to shit himself or the one Kinsella’s that looked like he already had….

  13. Asteroid moment
Ripudaman Singh Malik, of Air India Infamy, claims that assertions made in a story posted on the CBC website on April 22 during the federal election campaign have defamed his reputation.
He has filed a libel lawsuit today against CBC TV reporter Terry Milewski.

  14. The NDP is pretty good at fundraising. The LPC and Bloc are another matter.
Maybe we should put some money in brown paper bags for the LPC so they can re-build enough to handle the NDP.

  15. Officially today, May 3 2011, I want a conservative government to act like a majority conservative government. I gave you guys miles of rope in your minority.
Don’t f*ck with me, (I am presuming I am talking for the base) unless you want to go to 2 seats again.

  16. altaguy, funny line you got there and I agree. Looked good on both of them. Oliver was in stroke territory.

  17. Absolutely detest Milewski, but how many millions has this Ripudaman asshat already cost us in court and legal fees?
Fine the bastard bigtime for frivilous lawsuits and make Milewski shave his mustache and start talking ‘Canuck’.

  18. Can’t believe how many times I read “They only got 40 percent of the vote!!!” today. This was even a comment on a site stating only 2 gov’t’s have ever had 50 percent or more. Dief in 58 and Mulroney once. It showed the rest have all been around 40%, so what’s the difference now?
Oh, yeah. The complaints come from people who also state that a tax cut is ‘giving’ someone money, as opposed to taking less.
    Go figure.

  19. Derek, there’s nothing more annoying than to hear a Leftard issue the talking point, “60% of Canadians don’t support the Conservatives”. While technically true on the surface it absolutely whitewashes a whole lot of reality. First off, it implies that all 60% are unified behind one other party or movement. Not true.
Secondly, for those who scream “we need proportional representation (PR)”, I carefully & calmly explain to them how incredibly undemocratic PR is in practice. What occurs is that parties generate lists of candidates, from #1 through #N. Then they’re assigned a number of seats with the first populated by candidate #1, the second by #2, and so on. This means that no matter how unpopular & corrupt the leaders of these parties might be, they will keep on going back to the House of Commons. Direct democracy gone in an instant. This is why I voted against it here in BC and why I’ll vote against it federally.

  20. Robert W. Not to mention, most ‘majority’ governments have been founded from around 40% of the vote, including Liberal majorities. I don’t hear the media saying that those governments were not legit.
My biggest fear of PR would be geographical representation. At least with ridings people represent a specific area, in theory at least. Let’s face it I don’t know what’s important to PEI. I shouldn’t represent them. I also think a MP should be from a riding, but that’s a whole different story.
I know both my MP and MLA personally, that’s why I feel represented.
I would change to a direct vote for head of state however and a triple E senate.

  21. Chretien Majority governments:
    1993- 177 seats with 41.23% of vote
    1997- 155 seats with 38.6% of vote
    2000- 173 seats with 41% of vote
Bob Rae took over Ontario Legislature with 37.6% of vote.
Only fed govn’t to ever get more than 50% of votes was Brian Mulroney in 1984 with 53.4%

  22. I would be curious to find out, if all the other parties amalgamated into a single party…call them the SdR (Salon des Refusés)…and then we held another election. Would they get 60% of the vote?

  23. Wrong on that -Dief also got more than 50% of the vote in 1958. Before that it was mostly 2 party with a few fringe and there were some wins around 50%.

  24. Dear EBD,
If I sold my 1992 Ford Tempo (with original floor mats) and bought a bicycle and put the rubber nuts on it (I know a welder) do you think I’d be able to [do the wild pony with] the about 6000 hausfraus that voted NDP in my riding?
    North Delta – Newton

  25. Proportional representation is the battle cry of the sore loser. Can you imagine the cluster @#$% it would be if we had P.P. in Canada? Everything would have to be decided by committee. The catering bills alone would bankrupt us. The riding system isn’t perfect, but it seems to work. At least with a majority we can get some of those new ridings established and boundarires redefined.
Regarding Craig, only a LPC government or coalition of losers would have given him ultimate the brass ring for old dog news men (Senate appointment). Now he’s pissed. Jane must be too, being that the two of them have to keep sharing the desk. Poor Janey, can’t be the Canadian Katie Kuric, boo hoo!
As I said last night, the way Craig looked after the majority was sewn up, the only thing left for him was the formaldahide and a silk pillow.
Sun News must start streaming more shows and perhaps start laying cable lines of their own, because if you think the media was nasty to the CPC during the campaign, just wait how evil they will get during their imminent death throes over the next 4 years. Defund the CBC and replace their time slots on cable with Sun!

  26. I’m having a tough time coming down from election combat and went on a short marauding rampage through that comments section to scratch the itch . Apparently the Saskatchewan Teachers Union is walking out on Thursday because they want a 12% raise this year. I think they need your feedback too.

  27. Come to think of it, I’ve met and know more exciting undertakers than how Kinsella presented himself last night! Sweet.

  28. *
just finished reading lawrence martin’s scurrilous “harperland”
hatchet job on the prime minister.
couldn’t believe the foaming bias. what’s the subtext here? did
a highschool-age stephen harper refuse to date this guy’s
    sister?

  29. Dear Infinity Squared (12:43):
No. All that bike riding, and all the extra rear-end weight, would tire you out beforehand.

  30. “Mr. Burns: your campaign seems to have the momentum of a runaway freight train. Why are you so popular?”

  31. (Double post – EBD) “Mr. Burns: your campaign seems to have the momentum of a runaway freight train. Why are you so popular?”

  32. Robert W. Awesome spreadsheet. I think I may try to overlay the number of seats as well.
    Thanks

  33. By the way, I heard there was a Blue door and a Red door… anyone seen this Red door I’ve heard so much about???

  34. Re: Obama and the US Forces refusal to transmit photos of “not dead enough” Osama Bin Laden.
    Any speculations??

  35. neo:
Re: Negative publicity against our PM and other Conservative members.
We let them get away with it, that’s why! We need to defend our elected officials. For example, Layton went on Radio-Canada TV today and said that 60% of the people in Canada voted against Harper and/or the Conservatives. OK, and if that’s true, 70% of Canada voted against the NDP. But no one says that.

  36. @ Derek
Using the “Price is Right” analogy, the red door has a clown in a Jalopy behind it.
