Under monies loaned to First Nations (page 105), Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation is carrying a deficit in the amount of $500,000. It’s alleged that despite the PBCN Council members [last term’s members] asking what the loan was for, they were unable to get the information from the Prince Albert Grand Council.
Over a four-month period last winter, 1,500 cheques were written from the $3.7- million trust account of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN), despite orders from the band’s trustees to freeze all spending from the account.
This spending spree occurred on the watch of longtime Chief Ron Michel, who last month was voted in as chief of the powerful Prince Albert Grand Council.
In December of 2010, Melvin Napolean Merasty and George Kevin Sewap were charged with theft and fraud over $5,000.

Racist!
No doubt about it.
Sorry. I forgot to throw in “colonialism”.
So: Colonialism!!
Neo-Imperialist Running Dogs poking their RACIST!!! noses into the affairs of sovereign Aboriginal Nations.
Shameful.
When do the next checks come, btw?
Before you become too smug, just remember they are creatures of the federal government, as is their system
of administration.
While better at subterfuge, significant amounts of tax dollars
get spent this way in most federal administration. That is why Stephen Harper is confident that he can find at least a 6% reduction in federal spending, which is all he needs to meet his four year deficit reduction targets.
If we ever see reform of aboriginal governance their economic development will be impressive. Until then it is sometimes so bad one can only laugh.
Some of the best dry humour I’ve ever heard, is the satire ordinary band members come up with about their own Indian government.
Meanwhile, Harper went from a $12 billion surplus to a $54 billion deficit in four years.
Eh, it’s only money. Lots more where that came from!
I bought a BIG diesel pusher motorhome last year.
Fuel’s going up…my finances aren’t.
Think I could cross interracial barriers and become an honourary indian.
I promise to diligently spend those Indian Affairs dollars at the band store/gas bar.
Hey…don’t I get a cut on fuel $$ too?
Where do I sign up!
Must have been one hell of a good party.
Harper’s overspending isn’t lost here, Bak, lest you think Canadian conservatives have forgotten fiscal prudence.
Why do we give these idiots so much money. Why?
You know those ads on TV that say “We’re all treaty people.”? It seems to me that it was a Queen who signed that treaty, not me. Give her the bill.
“deficit recovery”
Does that mean they get back what they wasted?
do all those remote settlements and reserves have potable water yet?
Most Canadians get pretty smug when hearing of fiscal abuse on reserves. I shake my head.
The theft of public funds under the Chretien/Martin regime is well documented even if ignored in this election campaign.
There are currently as many people working for all levels of government in Canada as there are people working in manufacturing. Canadian taxes now take more money from earners than any other expense. It is well established throughout the world that graft and corruption exists in any org that has weak oversight. The bureacracy taxes revenue and then consumes it, legitimizing the process by over layering the ‘taking’ with politicans who at best have questionable creditials to run anything.
We are now in an election campaign where not a party has challenged the people to take less from the communal pot. Night after night it is a review of citizens asking ‘what’s in it for me’? Never a comment from a politican that this is unsustainable.
I have more respect for GWB who at least got up in front of the camera with flip charts to try and explain USA health care funding issues.
Maybe it’s time to rebrand.
If they re-name the “Grand Council” to the “Million Council” it wouldn’t look so bad.
Hi: Nobody everybody benefits from the vast amount of monies that is being spent by this i refer to ordinary PBCN members. I would encourage the readership of this site to go to (www.vote4harold.com)- the fight against corruption and incompetence goes on – show your support by hiiting the site today and tommorrow. Thanks concerned PBCN member.

But as long there is an Indian Industry, it will continue. Said industry consists of four sectors: lawyers, civil servants, consultants, and politicians, especially those with fat expense accounts and the authority to command cheques to be cut.
Oh, and I forgot academics who are often the consultants paid to tell the Chief and Council what the Chief and Council want to hear.
Louise: I think that’s the problem here right? More often than not there is no sure-fire way to ensure that a Chief and Council are not committing fraud. There are no rules, regulations and if there is, they are poorly enforced.
Unlike the greedy culture of Europeans, natives live in a sharing culture at peace and in harmony with nature. That’s why they don’t need the checks and balances of Western governments; just cheques and allowances.

Yep, we know. This is why I never blame any of the goings on in Caledonia on the Indians. They’re not doing it, 95-99%. You get 1-5% worthless jackasses in any group, just the way life is.
Except government. Seems to be a concentrating factor there, ratio is more like 45-60% jackasses.
My, how they enjoy spending “OUR” hard earned dollars! They are masters of the con!
