Reader Tips

In tonight’s adjunct to the Tips we look at something that’s kinda like ice fishing, only it’s completely different. Whatever you want to call it, don’t try this at home.

  1. This afternoon an old buddy of mine came over for a visit with his young sons. We got to talking about the election.
He lamented that nothing of any real importance is ever discussed during such campaigns.
On this note I rhetorically asked him whether he had any doubt that the next 10+ days of the election campaign will be consumed with the media mostly talking about whether Lizzie May will be allowed into the debate. Big Whoop!
Do you think such focus on triviality occurs because our journalists are second rate and unable to ask politicians real questions or is it because their market research shows that average Canadians aren’t bright enough to care and instead wants the election campaign to be treated like a reality game show?

  2. I’d like to think it’s the second rate journalism thing but in all likelihood it’s some from column A and some from column B.

  3. Christ. Is it just me or is the media practically cheerleading for Ignatieff? Full disclosure here; I am not one of those ‘oh-the-media-is-pathologically-biased-against-conservatives’ types. But everywhere I look these days, be it CTV, CBC, Globe ad Mail, TorStar, and even nat post, all I see are reporters and commentators talking Iggy up and slamming Harper on ridiculous stories and faux-scandals. I mean, seriously, this is a guy who is 10-20 pts behind in the polls and we’re hearing about how comfortable and relaxed the guy is? Listen to the man speak! For a so-called intellectual he sounds like a clown. Case in point “But arming rebels and all that stuff… in my judgment that would not be advisable,” seen Here. And remember “I’ll mess with you until I’m done?” The man is a laughingstock and full of gaffes. Why hasn’t the media called him out for only ruling out a coalition if he comes first in the polls, while saying nothing about coming in second place (sort of more relevant, methinks!)? And what about the fact that his signature is on a coalition agreement that hasn’t expired yet? If this was Harper they’d crucify him, yet the second iggy offered a non-committal half-assed rejection the headlines came out blazing “IGNATIEFF RULES OUT COALITION“. And now they’re criticizing harper for supposedly suggesting a coalition, calling him a hypocrite. For what? not forming a coalition in 2006? This is getting ridiculous!

  4. Mark, let’s face it, the U.S. MSM won the election for Obama. Now the Canadian MSM is attempting to do the same.
Too bad Sun News TV wasn’t in place for a year before this election.
Still, I have faith in my fellow Canadians outside of Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, & Montreal not to suddenly lose their minds.

  5. mark If the media did not build him up there would be no election. There has to be a race to sell product. The message from the media to Iggy was to be agressive. The man blunders enough when he is careful so look at it as entertainment.

  6. Re: Mussel collecting
EDB, do you know where this was? From the looks of the people I’d guess Siberia but, 40′ tides aren’t that common anywhere in the world.

  7. I’m not sure, Zog; the only information I’m aware of is that provided by wimp.com, which is to say, zilch. There is a link to a BBC webpage just under the video, and I suspect you’d find more information there. I would have guessed Siberia too.
Mark (10:51): It’s absolutely not just you. The National’s coverage has just been making me apoplectic for the reasons you describe. They’re campaigning on Ignatieff’s behalf, spouting the Liberal narrative, while occasionally paying lip service to minor criticism of him. The CBC building is truly the Liberal headquarters during this campaign.
Maybe it’s a good thing that more people don’t know about it, because the collective blood pressure among conservatives in this country would go through the roof. I know it’s not good for mine…

  8. Not sure I would risk death for mussels. In fact I am certain I wouldn’t. But to get the shots for a story about people crazy enough to risk death for mussels? Now that’s nuts.
The media has been in the tank for the Liberals for years. They are pretty certain all the cool people are because the cool people they know, who are all in the media, are in the tank for the Liberals.
Rather like Pauline Kael – the famed New Yorker film critic – wondering how Republicans got elected because she had never met anyone who had voted for one.

  9. The media needs to sell papers and get ratings / eyeballs … a complete runaway election fails to achieve that, so they must create the ILLUSION of a close race where there is none.
Also a researched FACT from the U.S. which likely also applies here: the second lowest college undergrad grades were in students who went on to become journalists. The LOWEST were those who went on to become teachers. That explains a LOT.

  10. @ ZOG – my bro-in-law comes from the northern Sweden/Finland border area. He’s the one who sent that clip to me, and I sent it on to Kate. He says the language / dialect we hear them speaking in the clip is from the Swedish/Finnish border area above the Arctic Circle.

  11. This is a “What if Sarah Palin said it” or, for those that think watching the CBC makes one dumber, tonights National was a classic. Peter slipped up and corrected himself when he started a story on Syria by saying North America. He cooly smirked and said “…did I just say North America? What I meant to say was North Africa.” I waited till the end of the story thinking Peter would correctly say the Middle East but no luck.

  12. The Syrian Spring
Amidst the many dangers posed by the political conflagration now engulfing the Arab world, we are presented with a unique opportunity in Syria. In Egypt, the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak has empowered the Muslim Brotherhood. The Sunni jihadist movement which spawned al-Qaeda and Hamas is expected to emerge as the strongest political force after the parliamentary elections in September.

  13. “The message from the media to Iggy was to be aggressive. The man blunders enough when he is careful, so look at it as entertainment.”
    That’s very funny.
Now I’m greatly looking forward to his Ignatieszene aggression.

  14. Tonights CTV news poll on voter apathy affirms my what I guessed on the Conservative “beware a coalition” strategy – motivating the base will be key in a low turnout.

  15. Listen closely to the liberals choice of words as this campaign moves on. Today I heard Ignautious us the words “Progressives, Hope and also Change in news comments. Sounds like the US socialists (Obama Democrats) giving advice.
Remember when Ignautious took over the Lib leadership and Obama was elected The Igg said he has the keys to the back door of the White House.
I sure hope the electorate are paying attention.

  16. News coverage from Vancouver quotes Liberal leader MI stating that if the CPC wins the election and introduces the same budget, his party will not support the same budget measures that all three parties rejected. How can this be, if the budget never came up for a vote? If the non-confidence vote toppled the government, then there is no way he can be accurate in stating that the other three parties rejected the March 2011 budget. No budget vote, no way Ignatieff can honestly state that the budget was rejected.

  17. re: Stealth Coalition
    Today’s London Free Press-
Ryan Dolby, NDP candidate for Elgin-Middlesex-London announced today without warning that he was withdrawing from the race and encouraging his supporters to vote Liberal.

  18. Isn’t that how they do it in PEI? Didn’t understand the language though; they must have been Cape Bretoners.

  19. mark, re the MSM’s relentless cheerleading for Iggy: “This is getting ridiculous!”
What it is, is scandalous and undemocratic, totalitarian, in fact. Our MSM is the unelected Opposition to our duly elected government, which they’ve been trying to unseat ever since the CPC were elected.
Some would call their actions treasonous. They’re definitely unethical and immoral and contemptuous of our Parliamentary democracy.

  20. I lived in Ungava for a few years . . . in winter that was pretty common stuff in a few of the communities . . . the sound under the ice as soon as the tide started to flood was very, very creepy.
Those mussels have a fabulous taste.

  21. You have to read a very long way to find this tidbit at the tail-end of an article in today’s Hill Times:
“The Forum research poll, with a margin of error of only plus or minus 2.2 per cent 19 times out of 20 for its national results, gave the Conservatives 41 per cent support from decided and leaning voters, with 24 per cent for the Liberals, 19 per cent for the NDP, 10 per cent for the Bloc Quebecois and seven per cent for the Green Party.”
I suppose it just wasn’t important.

    Idiots.

  23. Canadan MSM love Iggy and Lizzie May exactly the way US MSM loved Obama prior to their presidential election.
Canadian MSM wallow in the same leftist sludge and disseminate it freely and willingly as truth to Canadians.
And Will SUN TV be different?
Why, oh why, did conservative Conrad Black for sake Canada?
Will ye no come back Conrad?

  24. Kind of strange, that the msm have conveniently ‘forgotten’ how they used to tout Iggy’s ‘close ties’ to the Obama White House!

  25. Mark: “Is it just me or is the media practically cheerleading for Ignatieff? ”
They are cheerleading for Libs. Most are Liberal in their own political leanings and may do some of this unconsciously. Some of it might also be payback for Harper’s dislike of the media (who could blame him?), and a proclivity to cheer for the underdog. Or maybe it is just an effort to spur competition in the election to create a buzz. I believe if the election begins to show increased support for the Liberals there may well be a sudden backpedaling if they realize their strategy might in fact be successful.
In my own view, Harper is the far superior person to lead the country. I think deep down many in the media must realize this (not all, but many). Media needs to recognize that they are playing with fire and risking political chaos (coalition, Western separation, job losses, problems on the stock exchange etc.). At this point, I think they view it all as a game. Conservatives are not asking for preferential treatment — just fairness.

  26. If you are posting in the National Post’s Full comment blog, you may be interested in knowing, that your posts may not be visible to anyone but you.
To validate whether your posts are indeed visible to the readers, you can make a test reply to anyone else’s comment, then check from a different browser or different IP address without logging in.
I discovered that for weeks now dozens of my posts are not visible, but included in the reply count, which is a proof.
Censorship at a ‘conservative’ newspaper? Who would have thought!

  27. Investigation found that my account at NP is blocked and there is no functionality on their web site to notify the member of that. So if you are not getting any thumbs down or up at NP, you are blocked w/o you knowing.
So much for ‘free’ and ‘conservative’ press.

Man’s gotta be hungry to fish for oysters that way. Wow !

  30. Liberal Count Ignatieff is miffed, miffed, Our PET Cemetery Mole reports.
    Count doesn’t rate a mention.

“A Recent Exercise in Nation-Building by Some Harvard Boys”
“It was worth a smile at breakfast that morning in February 2006, a scrap of social currency to take out into the world. Michael Porter, the Harvard Business School management guru, had grown famous offering competitive strategies to firms, regions, whole nations. Earlier he had taken on the problems of inner cities, health care and climate change. Now he was about to tackle perhaps the hardest problem of all (that is, after the United States’ wars in Afghanistan and Iraq).
He had become adviser to Moammar Khadafy’s Libya.
There at the bottom of the front page of the Financial Times was a story that no one else had that day, or any other – a scoop. It turned out that Porter and his friend Daniel Yergin and the consulting firms which they had respectively co-founded and founded, Monitor Group and Cambridge Energy Research Associates, had been working for a year on a plan to diversify the Libyan economy away from its heavy dependence on oil. Their teams had conducted more than 2,000 interviews with “small- and medium-scale entrepreneurs as well as Libyan and foreign business leaders.” (Both men are better-known as celebrated authors: Porter for Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors and The Competitive Advantage of Nations, Yergin for The Prize: the Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power and The Commanding Heights: the Battle for the World Economy.)
The next day Porter would present the 200-page document they had prepared in a ceremony in Tripoli. Khadafy himself might attend. The FT had seen a copy of the report, which envisaged a glorious future under the consultants’ plan. If all went well, it said, then by 2019 – the 50th anniversary of the military coup that brought Col. Khadafy to power – Libya would have “one of the fastest rates of business formation in the world,” making it a regional leader contributing to the “wealth and stability of surrounding nations.””

  31. mj: Yesterday (March 30): “The Forum research poll, with a margin of error of only plus or minus 2.2 per cent 19 times out of 20 for its national results, gave the Conservatives 41 per cent support from decided and leaning voters, with 24 per cent for the Liberals, 19 per cent for the NDP, 10 per cent for the Bloc Quebecois and seven per cent for the Green Party.”
Headline today @ http://ca.news.yahoo.com/canada/: “Polls show Liberals close gap on Tories.” When you click on this headline the Reuters article is entitled “Conservatives’ lead narrows in poll.” (Is “narrowing” the same as “closing the gap?)
So, which is it MSM: that Conservatives are way out ahead of all of their competition or that the Liberal$ have “closed the gap” on them? That’s a lot of points to have to make up, 17 to be exact.
The lamestream media’s stats about, and fawning over, the Liberal$ doesn’t pass the smell test — or any test, for that matter. They must think we’re all a bunch of myopic morons.
